How about if you could toggle this feature "on" and "off"? For instance, if you set it to "off" then your character isn't paying attention to whats going on around him/her. And if you set it to "on" then your character is paying close attention to his/her surroundings.

And in real life its visible that someone is trading stuff to another person, even if you care or not. Maybe you dont realize as you dont pay attention, but its the same with dropped items for example.
Yeah, but do we really need to have more (for many probably totally uninteresting) information in a window which is too small for big amounts of texts anyway, just for the sake of realism? I think the introduction-system showed where this can lead to.

It is as always a question of advantages and disadvantages.

While the introduction system was predicted to be.... like it was, the only disadvantage of this idea seems to be the additional messages it produces. I personally don't think we will see many of them (probably only every few hours or even only every few days?) so I don't really see a problem with that as long as the additional messages themselves redardless their amount aren't regarded as problem.
I personally see the main point of this idea not in realism but in support (support, not forcing!) of roleplaying.

And it's too hard to use "/me reaches a bulky sack to X, from which a metalic sound can be heard"?
I rather think that this feature will restrict RP. It's a way to make "non-RPers" look like they're actually RPing. If they don't mind to RP, I don't mind their "System"-messages either.

Those who take RPing serious, and also like to RP, will write something anyway.. and that in a much better way than any "generic" message can be. And IF they want to be the trade a secret, they will also RP it in such a way..

Tell-trades? That's pretty much OOC.. and their "X gives Y some Z" message will not really change it.

What if you want to trade something OOCly? For example during some RP, to get some item which one of them ought to have anyway. The "X gives Y some Z" message would be disturbing.
I really don't see a benefit for RPers.

What would be an appropriate solution but completely impractical would be to have your inventory in a back pack that must be removed in order to access and items taken out appearing in your hand or else the contents dumped on the ground as the case may be. Rooting around in your pack would be shown as your arm in the pack. Items transfered from one character to another would be from hand to hand, small objects obscured but large ones visible. Obviously things transfered as the contents of a bag being exchange would not be visible. Some thiefly skills might enable greater obscuration. And so on.

Personally I see too many messages now that I cannot seem to turn off, I do not want more.

To see what's selling well and for how much. And if you can turn off other people's combat messages (which I do), it shouldn't be hard to turn off other people's trades if they decide to implement this.

I think this is a good idea, but two things need to happen. First, you must be able to disable other people's trades if you want., as others have mentioned. Second, this should go under auction or system, or something else, just as long as it stays out of the main chat.

But I am curious what people trade sometimes, and I think some people could benefit from knowing what is being traded more.  \\o//

I disagree, I think that if this is implemented it belongs in the main tab, not the auction or system tab (as it is an action that your character is meant to be viewing).

perhaps the 'trading' conversation should just have a smaller 'hearing' range?

Which brings me to suggest such commands as...

/trade [target] = trade with selected target, converstation is only heard by people about 4 avatar widths away... [players have to be within this distance to do the trade!]
/wisper [target] = talk to person quietly and have to be right next to the person they are talking to or maximum of 2 avatar widths away [players have to be within this distance to do the action!] this could also have a fun eliment of dropping random words in the normal /say hearing distance - so that others only hear 'partial' conversation where certain words are * out.

and I think that the player should have a 'listen' skill too, which enables you to 'block out' or 'filter' chat from you hearing - or listen to specific players 'wispering' giving you a larger circle of hearing it the better your skill...

Sorry if this is not the correct thread for these ideas.

I really like the idea of being able to /whisper to people, instead of using /tell to whisper. Makes sense if somebody can eavesdrop on people whispering by standing right next to them.

Maybe this deserves a thread of it's own?

On second thoughts, maybe I should search the forums first...

Well it seems that this idea has been addressed at least three times (a link to the latest thread here).
