Using healing magic in Death Realm
« on: May 30, 2008, 01:33:09 pm »
In my opinion, using healing magic in Death Realm should be impossible.

Why? Because it is DEATH Realm and therefore I think it shouldn't be possible to use forces of LIFE there.

It's mainly all about the feeling that you are in some specific place which is ruled by it's laws. The Realm of decay and emptiness. How could healing spells exist in such place?

It's also about being scary if you could manage to get out DR - THIS TIME  ;D

What do you think?

Could that be useful?

Sorry, but I consider this such an unessential "feature" that I don't see any reason in putting any implementation effort in it.

I think it is essential. Maybe not the most significant but still.
I think the main picture is build up from details. It's one of the points that will make Death Realm dangerous and scary place.
Not just an area to roll through, like it's nowadays.   X-/

I don't think Kaityra meant it was a bad idea or anything, its just that there are a lot of more important things that need to be worked out before little details like that.
Censorship FTW.

Could that be useful?

I don't know, lets ask the dictionary: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/useful
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
use·ful   [yoos-fuhl]
–adjective
1.   being of use or service; serving some purpose; advantageous, helpful, or of good effect: a useful member of society.
2.   of practical use, as for doing work; producing material results; supplying common needs: the useful arts; useful work.

[Origin: 1585–95; use + -ful]

—Related forms
use·ful·ly, adverb
use·ful·ness, noun

—Synonyms 1, 2. profitable, efficacious, beneficial.
—Antonyms 1, 2. useless.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does not being able to heal oneself sound like it serves some purpose, is advantageous or even benefecial?

Sorry, but if we are talking about implementing things for the sake of realismn, I'd really like to see the Loo Realm being implemented first. This would be the place where people get sent to, if spending to much time in the tavern and informing everyone about their sipping, drinking and gulping skill.

It does sound advantageous and beneficial to me, but only if settings deems it accurate.  My first impression is that it would be a cool limitation to put in place and probably not that hard to code, but I don't know if the settings would support that theory or not.
"Here's to lowering caskets of old friends choice and consequence we'll birth a new day with the death of an old and start over, start over.  Here's to burying hatchets in those who you'd never call your friend...we'll birth a new day with the death of an old day and start over, start over!"

I fully agree that

but such little details could be implemented easily (at least I think so :) ) and they could make DR more unique.

And I think it COULD BE useful by making game mechanics in DR more varied.

You could imagine that it would change our view on DR some way, wouldn't you?

I KNOW that there are a lot of more urgent problems to deal with, but come on it's a WISH list not a list of DEMENDS.

I just trying to express my little idea. If it's not worth it let it be forgotten. If it is helpful some way then let it be noticed (and maybe some day implemented)

Really sounds like what you are asking for is "True Death" or are you not considering respawning in the DR from the DR as healing magic? To take this a bit further should you have 0 hp when you spawn in the DR after dying? If you are talking about casting player magic only that is a different thing than ruling out any healing magic. I suppose this is what you mean but perhaps what should be in effect instead is a constant slow regeneration effect within the DR and spawning with 1hp. This could be enabled to prevent tripping to save time as if you do not spend enough time in the DR you will not be fully regenerated and Dakkrus curse could be applied to current hp as well as maximum.

I would think that it wouldn't make a difference since dark way magic doesn't have any limited effects in the living realm. But maybe crystal way spells would have a bad effect on whoever it is cast on like dark way spells have a bad effect in the living realm. Maybe some dark way spells like weakness and crystal way spells like life infusion would work in the reverse when in the presence of the opposite crystal.

Spawning in DR even from DR DEFINETELY IS NOT A HEALING MAGIC.
More to do with planeshifting or planetraveling NOT HEALING.
How could you heal somebody who's dead like people in DR are?? It's the matter of approach to the subject.

THERE IS NO HEALING BECAUSE OF NO LIVE .

Besides I don't really agree

Because it is not said that the same rules are proper to both planes.

Although I like Illysia's point of view about reverse effects of the spells. It would be really, really interesting.
I also like spawning in dr with 0 hp and waiting to regenerate just like Prolix suggested.

So it seems that there are seeds of truth in every opinion  :)

Regards and thank you for all your opinions

This makes sense to me, for in time the DR will be much more than some short trip, it will be an entire world probably as large as Yliakum (at least, last I heard...?)

I personally think this might be a good idea for then that happens, however, there should be -a- way to heal, though not through crystal way. or perhaps, similar to what was suggested earlier, -crystal- way should have different effects under a -different- crystal. As a note, I am not sure that when you're in the DR you are actually dead, for that is what True Death is. Don't quote me on it, but I thought the DR was sort of a bypass to death.

All spells and glyphs would still work in the Death Realm, they would just have completely different effects. Do some quests and you'll see many references to "the laws of magic being different in the Death Realm". It'll take time to make sure all spells have a DR counterpart though. In time :)
We're not evil. We're simply amazing.

First of all I would like to thank you for all your valuable opinions.
I'm glad that you have taken this subject seriously because I think that DR is a really interesting place and with some simple enhancements could be interesting even more.
So I think it's worthy to put some effort in this. And I think that reversing the effects of the spells is a GREAT IDEA  \\o//

Why we debating on such details?
Because developing and enlarging DR should be done by developers and programers, and to us players some details, to vary this enviroments, should be left.

My regards to all DR enjoyers  :D

See, now THIS is how one should make a wish :) I like the idea, and I think it probably will be done eventually, just maybe not in the way you envisage right now. As Thom said, settings wise, the glyphs all work in the DR, they just have completely different effects.

In breath of fire 3 if you cast a healing spell on an undead type of enemy, it does serious damage.
