Crashing on XP
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:34:11 pm »
Hello, I have been trying to play the game on my XP computer, but for some reason it keeps crashing at near random times in game. Normally, I'd just call it an annyance, but it has recently began crashing minutes, sometimes seconds, after the game has loaded. The longest it has gone withough crashing is half an hour. My computer doesn't quite meet the minimum suggested requirments, but I haven't experianced any lag for the period of time I'm in game. The game worked fine on my laptop which had Vista, but I can't figure out why it won't work on here. Anyone know?

System Info:

Computer type: Acer Aspire T135
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600)
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3100+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c
Memory: 448MB RAM

Maps which I usually crash in:

Anywhere in or around the Hydlaa Plaza, including the temple, Tavern, and sewers. (on a side note, I have some kind of graphic problem entering the temple, but more on that when I can get on lol)

Can you get us some console output?  My guess is that you are running out of RAM (that's pretty low!), but I am not the best educated in these matters...
"Here's to lowering caskets of old friends choice and consequence we'll birth a new day with the death of an old and start over, start over.  Here's to burying hatchets in those who you'd never call your friend...we'll birth a new day with the death of an old day and start over, start over!"

Not all lag is just related to your ram amount some is related to your graphics card, also you have not told us what card you have.

That laptop has an integrated card: Via Unichrome. Those cards have about 64 MB memory tops, and they're not really fast. This may be the issue. However, you should try console output first. Just launch PlaneShift with the --verbose & --console parameters added to the shortcut paths.

In layman's terms?

Right-click on shortcut -> Properties ->Shortcut Tab -> Target
Change it from something like
"C:\Program Files\PlaneShift\psclient.exe"
to
"C:\Program Files\PlaneShift\psclient.exe" --verbose --console
And click OK :)

It says that the directory doesn't exist....

the current target is: "C:\Program Files\PlaneShift Steel Blue\psclient.exe"

how should I change it?

EDIT: Ok, I think I managed to change it, but it still crashed on me. I saved the error file or whatever it is though (sorry if its long, I don't know where to send it.):

Ehh, that's not a PlaneShift crash. That's a Java crash.

Secondly, those parameters were not supposed to stop the crashing, they were supposed to give more output :)

Try this:
Start
Execute
cmd (press enter)
cd c:\program files\planeshift steel blue\ (press enter)
psclient.exe --console --verbose (press enter)
A new cmd will open that will give output.

Click on the little "C:\" icon in the upper left corner of the cmd window, click "edit", then "mark". Select all output and copy is by pressing "enter". Then paste it here.

Good luck.

I must have done something wrong, because it brings up this black window showing command lines that I can't highlight or copy. I can run it while the game goes though, but I can't transfer the lines of coding to here...

As I described:

"Click on the little "C:\" icon in the upper left corner of the cmd window, click "edit", then "mark". Select all output and copy is by pressing "enter". Then paste it here."
