Graphic troubles OUTSIDE ps after playing
« on: June 12, 2008, 10:00:27 pm »
Hi,

Im having troubles with messed up graphics after playing ps (well, as topic says ;) ). Let me make a few short points on this issue:
- troubles started after playing ps 0400 version
- was (to my great disappointment) reproduceable on two machines!
- seems to be hardware issues

Both machines were laptops; one with ati graphic, one with nvidia. The nvidia one had to get the mainboard/graphics combo replaced, the other apparently should be replaced, but is too old :/
What makes me composing this topic is that it is certainly caused by ps (or crystalSpace, Im not making a difference here) and it affects the system outside ps.

That's how the BIOS screen of the ati looks like after playing ps last time:

Sorry for bad quality, but you should get the point.

Again, it happened on two different systems after playing ps!
There are other smaller issues like stripes on the screen depending on resolution/color depth mode.

I wonder if anyone else noticed something similar, maybe only the stripes?
If someone from ps or cs can have a look at it and even provide feedback it would be a good thing, too....

That's no PS bug. I think your integrated graphics card is either
a) Getting overheated by playing the game PlaneShift, and thus causing so-called "artefacts" on your screen.
b) Broken.

Since it's on two different laptops, I'd say your cards are getting overheated.
You can't do much about it, just turn down all graphics options, make sure you have the latest graphics (and motherboard) drivers, and if your driver has a "performance vs. quality" setting, put performance to max and quality to lowest.

This is the second time I have heard this problem mentioned on laptops, and only since the latest release of PS. (second time assuming that Sen does not use a different name on IRC)

[Edit]

On a related note, do graphics adaptors in laptops not have an automatic throtleing system to stop them overheating in such a way?

I don't know, Pizik. It might depend on the card/drivers/BIOS settings, etc. All I know is that PS can't cause corruption to your BIOS screen.

Im sure on irc it was also me who reported this, so it's still kinda first time this is reported.
I just found some courage again after some time to try playing ps on a (then different) laptop again assuming it was only bad hardware on first laptop causing it to fail. After the second broken laptop I decided to go to a bigger audience (this forum) to see if Im having incredible bad luck or if there is something more.

Since no other player reported graphic issues outside ps (would be most likely the stripes of that I took no screenshot) the overheating theory gets more probable again. (Though I don't know much on how hardware reacts to such cases) I don't think its a driver problem since first one was NVidia under Windows and the second ATI under Linux.

As a note: Both laptops played previous releases of ps fine and for the second laptop I turned down all graphics (including texture downsampling) before trying to play version 0400 - I tried to learn from first broken laptop  ;).

Thank you for your replies - I guess as long as no other player reports similar issues it's not possible to track the problem down (But maybe keep in mind ;) ).

Just let me repeat again that there is no way in which PlaneShift can break your hardware. Just in case there are rumours :D
