Banned Last Name?

I'm creating a new character, and one of the last names I tried is banned. What's the benefit of banning a character's last name? Wouldn't the first name be all that's needed?

I don't really see what the Doh! is in that. Their first name would be banned, so when they go to login with said first name, they couldn't get in. That's how it would work, no? Since that person's never to be seen again, I don't see why others can't reap away that last name for themselves. Maybe when the person is banned, they could have their name changed to only one name instead of a first and last, so they'd be easier to ban?

Banning a name is not the same as banning a player.  When a player name is deemed inappropriate, it is changed.  Then the name is banned so that i can't be used again.  This does not prevent said player from logging in again.  Last names are banned at the discretion of the GM.  Yes, sometimes it is enough just to ban the first name.  But there are times when it is necessary to ban the last name as well, such as if we suspect it can be used in an inappropriate manner with another first name.

If a gm /banname's a name it is banned from being a first or last name no matter what the name is.

That Doh! refers to a very simple fact. If a name is inappropriate, it can be either the First Name, or the Last Name or even both. As we just heard from the GM's when the name is banned it automatically bans both. But think of it this way - if a person chooses an inappropriate name, and I mean that in the bad way of inappropriate, then he can do the same with both First Name and Last Name, right? It seems very natural that the GM's need the ability to ban both from that perpective.

Maybe a "better" way would be to have the ability to do so individually to each part of the name, and not automatically both, but that is another deal.

Yeah, despite  PS is supposed to be a drak fantasy, my original name (Tormentor) was changed by GM

Shaman was just confused by the message he got. He assumed a player was banned instead of the use of a name. Players are banned based on their email-address and IP though, this has nothing to do with this message. Apparently the name chosen was not appropriate, because it sounds like an OOC thing, or a profanity, or any other rule from the naming policy.

Tormentor is not a name, it's a function. Unlike most games out there PS has a strict naming policy that includes your name being an actual name, like real life.

Actually, this is how it works.  We ban each part of the name seperately.  But generally if a name can be used in combination with another name to violate the policy, there are other possible combinations, so in most cases it is prudent to ban both the first and the last name.  It is a bit of a judgement call, though.

It has meaning IRL and clearly outside of PS settings so it can be disruptive for other players. That's a name we'd probably change, yes.

Hm, but a tomahawk is a weapon. Axes and swords mean something in real life too, would Grimal Bloodaxe's name be up for change too, then?
