Server on or offline? Unable to connect to Fragnetics.
« on: July 14, 2008, 12:48:58 pm »
Y'ello people,

I'm having trouble connecting to the planeshift server, I checked my home network setting the ports open. (Atleast, I think I did). Also tried disabling/enabling my firewall even though it has the planeshift rule added to accept whatever connection it wants. So, I'm wondering.. Is the server online and running currently or not? I checked both sites provided in the forum but here's the problem: One site states it's online, the other says it's offline but has 90 playing members currently. I also tried pinging the server, which succeeded yesterday but fails as I write this.

Quote
http://plexus.shacknet.nu/cov/index.php - The community of Vaalnor, Planeshift Serverstatus:  Online
http://hydlaa.com/ - Server offline, 90 members. It's been like that since yesterday.

ping laanx.fragnetics.com - Unable to find host
ping 203.81.44.242 - Time out
ping 210.193.49.103 - Responce 4 times, 383 ms

( Also, the sticky concerning this problem seems to give 2 different IP adresses.. Bug or? It confuses me, so I therefor tried to edit the xml with both the 2 IP adresses above which changed/helped nothing. )

Quote
The server could be experiencing a DNS problem. Try to use the IP address to access it: 203.81.44.242

Edit the servers.xml file within the data folder of your PlaneShift's directory to reflect this change.

The picture gives a other IP adress then stated above in the text.

I saw a other topic where it stated the server was offline yet with playing members, and toggled the setup options as that fixed it for the user, but did nothing for me.

Any help on this option is appreciated, from what I can guess seeing this info it has been down for today and yesterday. Can anyone confirm this? Otherwise it still might be my network.

Summary:
- Pinging worked yesterday, not today
- Disabled firewall - No change
-Tried to change the planeshift setup options - No change
- Forwarded ports in router - No change
- Edited server.xml file with no success

Pc info:

Win xp - Service pack 2
Connected to a cable
No proxies
Bit defender firewall / Virus scanner

If you need any more information, I'll do my best to provide it. Again, any help is greatly appreciated, I played this game at least a year ago. Since it improved allot I'd thought I would give it another shot, trying to find a nice game to RP on aswell now that I quitted a other game whose name I won't mention here.  :D

Regards,
Dark Ap

P.s I'm don't know much about networking, port forwarding, etc. So please put any help in easy terms.
P.p.s I was able to fix the OpenAl32.dll bug for myself by reading the stickies, perhaps that is of any use aswell.

http://laanx.fragnetics.com/ is the only site atm that can tell server status. the pages that make several other sites show the status are not working.

Alright, good to know that for the future. Thanks, so from what I can see here:

Quote
Time:     Mon Jul 14 18:56:02 SGT 2008
Report Time      Mon Jul 14 18:55:46 SGT 2008
   Total Online:   62
   Accounts    546216

It's online with 62 users? Meaning there is still something wrong with my firewalls and stuff? ^^ Confirmation is again appreciated  :sorcerer:

The example picture is just old and out of date and has the the old IP address.

As you see, the current time and the report time are fairly close together, which means the server is indeed up and responding.  (sometimes when it is not responding, it will show people as being online, but the two times will be way off so it really means it is down)\

Wat is the PS version number it says you have when you load up the client?  If it is .4.01, then it sounds like its a firewall issue.

Yea, it's the .4,01 aka latest version. Downloaded it yesterday of the main site.

Very annoying, the bloody firewall my cousin keeps setting up continously blocks this kind of stuff, he wants me to forward the ports. >.< Sheep it, lol. I'm just turning that bloody router, modem, switch / whatever firewall off which aint on my pc. That should do the trick.

Edit: Appareantly I filled "777" in everywhere instead of "7777", forgot one 7. I'll see what this does if I put the number right, if it does nothing I'm turning the firewall off.

Edit2: Changed nothing at all, still shows that the server is down. I hate these kind of problems, lol. Looked around, found no firewall or stuff within my router/network/whatever it actually is. Placed my ports correctly, pc firewall is off.. Any more ideas?

Edit3: Downloaded a older version, trying to update now which grants another error. Going to keep trying to find a solution x_x

Edit4: Didn't help, reinstalled the latest version but still keep getting a continous failure on the server check. My ports are opened correctly, even went on my wireless connection which granted no success.
Ran out of ideas, so feed me with suggestions if you got any.

ping laanx.fragnetics.com - Unable to find host
ping 203.81.44.242 - Time out
ping 210.193.49.103 - Responce 4 times, 383 ms
What IP do you now have in your servers.xml?
I think only 203.81.44.242 is correct.

(And... is it possible the you tried just the time where the dns did have a problem or is this reproducable?)

It still gives me a time out when I try to ping 203.81.44.242, currently my settings are standard again meaning I got laanx.fragnetics.com in my server.xml file. I just pinged laanx.fragnetics.com aswell, which does return with 386ms 4 times. The same goes for the 210.193.49.103 address.

So basically I can ping and reach the server, but just not connect to it through my game? I'm a tad confused now.

Edit: I found this in my PS folder, it might be of any use to you guys?

Edit: 90% Sure it's still some damn security blocking the way. Tried 2 other games yesterday/today downloaded off the net aswell, so far they both fail to connect to a server while they are both from a different maker. Curse you difficulties of a online firewall!  :@#\

Edit2: Just trying to use the "known fixes" for those games which apparently are not related to my firewall. I checked around several times in my modem and accespoint or w/e it's called and found no firewall. Stupid but that leads me back to the error-log above, can any developer or Admin take a look at it? Seems to be errors of the game unable to get the right packages or something >.< No clue, and my patience is wearing rather thin as I'd would like to play this game before next Christmas >.<

all that log says is
1. you have not run the updater
2. you have some firewall that is blocking ps in some way this may be a firewall you have locally, a hardware firewall or a firewall at your isp

One detail between; right now it looks like 203.81.44.242 is laanx' old IP. now it is 203.81.44.246. I hope Im right with this and that would explain why you can't ping the IP but the name laanx.fragnetics.com

#edit#
Right now it looks a bit like your local computer blocks internet access of planeshift client - Im not familiar with personal firewalls though.
Are you sure bitdefender is deactivated completely (maybe have a look if processes that have a bdsomething name are still active) and no other program could block it?

Just pinged the IP 203.81.44.246 - Time out for 4 times. Bit defender is completely deactivated (don't even got a virus scanner now) and I don't know what could be blocking it, I checked the 2 things I could access here 3 times, also added the port 7777 accepting the udp/icp. Wish my cousin would show up, perhaps he can point out something I missed.

Thanks for that, and I can't run the updater as it says there are no mirrors online :) I assume that means there is no patch location available to download from (Aka no new patch? )

The firewall at my computer is completely off, I'll restart windows and kill the rule that makes bit defender start up with my pc so It can't altar anything I'm not aware of. With a "Hardware firewall" I assume you mean a firewall located somewhere within my network things? (Router, modem, access point, something else ?? ) And what do I do if the firewall at my isp blocks it? Call and flame their heads till they hide under their desks? I already have a growing hate for them, as their customer support is lousy and they don't even recognise a router when they see one. It's like talking to a wall when you got a problem there >.<

Hello,

you have a typo in the IP address (33 instead of 44) where the ping failed. I think the name works fine so we can stick to this.

Can you tell us what router you have? (What model if possible)

Ah, after changing the typo it works fine. Sorry about that.

Here's my network installation thing:

Modem - Motorola SBV5120E
 |
Router - Linksys BEFSR11 192.168.1.1
 |
Switch -> My computer for cable internet. 192.168.1.100
 |
Wireless - Asus 802.11G 102.168.1.2

I am able to access my wireless and my router system, I can't connect to the modem however. (I don't know the number of it, last time my cousin setted it up by plugging a pc in there directly )

Edit: Just so you know, I REALLY appreciated your help on this matter ;> I'd sacrifice a cookie in your honour.

Cookies \o/

First I'd suggest the most strange thing ;D: If your computer is connected via both, wireless and wire, try to disconnect one (I personally would disconnect the WLAN (turn it off) so your PC can _only_ connect to the network by using the wire)

I think I found a manual of your router and it says that there is some filter settings under the advanced tab - I hope this is empty.

It is also possible to define forwarding there (e.g. Port 7777 to 7777 on IP 192.168.1.100 with protocol UDP if I got it right). But I don't really think this is necessary to do.

Haha, Yea. I tried that, I prefer my WLan since it never gives me any lag spikes though. I tried on wireless only / WLan only, I tried both on aswell. Not going to try both off though!  ;D

Here's a screen shot of how it's configured in my router, hope that helps:

Okay, looks good for your wired network at least (since packets get forwarded to your wired network interface (192.168.1.100))
Can tell me if there is some setting under the Filters tab of your router? This is about the last place where I can imagine an error at the moment...
