Dear Cilay & devs!

I've also come accross this particular problem; however, I suspect the problem is with using Vista.
HW conf:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200++, w/ an NVidia GeForce 7300 [latest video card drivers], using 32-bit vista.
Bug occurs only w/ the 2008.07.21 update installed, happens randomly, no crash report option is available; the error log's file contains no related information whatsoever.
If "run in compatiblity mode" [windows XP / SP2] is enabled, bug fails to occur, and PS runs normally (for some values of "normal", as interpreted in PS   ;) )
Devs might open a related bug, is somebody if inclined to do so.

Yep, i just ran into this problem as well. Everything was running excellently and then i downloaded the update just today. I also happen to run vista.

I noticed that i seemed to crash whenever I walked near/on sharp edges. I've also been getting stuck and reset a fair bit, I've used /unstick more times in the last half hour then in the previous three months or so of my planeshift experience :p

I'm adding my cnfirmation.
Vista, latest drivers, everything.

Happens on sharp edges (when I try to crawl up) , then a lot in arena, by crafting, fighting (usually with operation with items) but even by regular play without obvious cause.

Just wanted to provide an update on this problem:

The symptoms
This error occurs extremely frequently for me, to the point that the game is unplayable - 30 seconds of waiting for the character to free up for 10 seconds of play in the worst cases - thus Ive had plenty of opportunity to study it. When the error occurs, the client closes immediately without notice and apparently without even allowing the console a chance to flush itself (see the console output below). In my experience the crash happens most often:
  • During vertical collision with surfaces, especially angled ones (descending ladders/stairs, descending hills, jumping onto rooftops..)
  • In certain areas (hydlaa plaza is the least susceptible, while the locations listed below are some of the most frustratingly crashy)
  • Immediately after logging in
Though the crash seems to be possible anywhere, even at the initial login screen, that particular variety of crash has only happened once however and could be unrelated. It's worth noting though that the most important of those conditions is vertical collision with an angled surface. I can reproduce the bug with 90% or so reliability by descending a steep ladder (especially in dungeons), jumping up onto the ledges outside of the magic shop, and jumping onto the rotating gears in the sewers. Also worth noting is that, while playing the game with a friend, the non-collision-related crashes occurred for both of us at the exact same time.

What I've done:
  • Download the latest PlaneShift client from http://download.xordan.com/PlaneShift-v0.4.01.exe
  • Download the updated patcher from http://www.psmirror.org/psupdaterwin32.zip
  • Install both to the same directory in proper order
  • Run psupdater.exe, downloaded all files
  • Run psupdater.exe CheckIntegrity, downloaded all files
  • Run psupdater again to ensure the client is up to date (and again after the momentary server outage earlier today)
  • Run psclient.exe, crash, repeat ad naseum
  • Save two camera settings via the /graphicbug command (below)
  • Run psclient.exe in compatibility mode for various versions of windows from 98 to XP (x86)
  • Run psclient.exe/-console -verbose>consoleout.log (contents below)

Additional information:
The following is the first location I noticed to be especially susceptible to crashing. When passing by (and especially bumping into) the rock this camera is placed next to the client often disappears:

My system specs:
Windows XP Pro x64 SP2
AMD Athlon X2 64 bit dual core processor @ 2.6 Ghz per core
4 GB (4x1024MB) Corsair gaming memory
Nvidia Geforce 8600GTS, running Forceware version 169.21 (64 bit version)
Wildblue internet service, with latency ranging from 600 to 1500 milliseconds. Unlikely to be related, but just in case..

Conclusion
The crash occurs with such frequency during normal play that I'm afraid I've given up on actually trying to play PlaneShift until the issue is resolved, but I'm more than willing to try any suggested solutions and provide any additional information necessary to help resolve the bug. Best of luck to whoever decides to tackle this one, and I hope my information is at least somewhat helpful. :)

I've been able to trigger the same crashes at different hours today at the following position in Hydlaa sewers, just having my char walking or turning around : -117.30, 5.00, -141.44 in sector swr-blue.

(It's not too far from the sewers upper entrance, near Kada-El). Sometimes, I could even get crash over crash.

I've also tried running my client in Windows XP compatibility mode, and got the same results.

Finally, an interesting thing, perhaps: other places where I could get the same king of crash are also places where I got a 'received out of bound positional data... ' error.

Another update - I can confirm that the crash does not occur on the following system:

Windows XP Pro SP2 (x86 edition)
Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz
512mb generic DDR memory
GeForce 2 MX running Forceware version 97.31

I strongly suspect the crash to be related to the x64 architecture, especially when coupled with a capable OS. I don't currently have the means to test an x86 edition of windows XP on the same configuration as the initial bug report though, so I can't say for certain. That's all for now. :)

No; it's not the same thing.  This is your client just flickering away entirely without warning or error message.  The two errors might be related, but the issue you linked us to is a case where the game keeps running, fixes itself (even if slowly), and the client does not crash.  It happens to me as well, somewhat regularly.

I agree with you, Dreamcrafter, hence my previous post about this crash. And furthermore the crashes seem to happen almost anywhen/anywhere, whereas FS#1838 happens whenever one walks into a wall or touches an item.

only to find i dont crash this way. strange?

well it seems to work, not crashed in hours. so maybe this could be a tempory fix..try it yourself and let us all know?

I did that too some time ago and still had crashes.
Now, it's true that I haven't had much crashes of late (whether running from prompt or not).
