Client crash
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:16:53 pm »
Hi all... hope someone here can help me...

PlaneShift was working fine (after several 'lost connection's and a server restart) and then I tried to leave Ojaveda. As the client went to load the next map the client crashed. I have tried to set up an alt character - have gone through all the character creation steps - but when it went to load the game the client crashed again. I have been trying to connect back in for a while now (noticing that the server is either online, Failed or even Locked) - it shows that the connection is there at the moment but still crashes each time on loading the PS world...

I ran batch tasks using MainMenu (reset permissions, clean caches etc etc.), restarted and ran the psupdater. I checked in console and the psclient is all up to date.

Also noticed in the crashlog it says the version is 4.00 but I know it is actually 4.01. I did notice it update again with a version 4.01.13(?) during the week - I have had various new in-game bugs since the 4.01 update which have already been reported in the bugtracker, so I thought updating might have helped to fix a few of those. One of the bugs was the problem with losing 'focus' during attacks... it seemed to have been fixed after the server restart tonight, but now I have this complete client crash  :(

I have gone through the various Mac fixes and edited the files as suggested - I had done this previously when I first started playing PlaneShift but have just now edited them again as they were overwritten due to the 4.01 update.

Specs on my computer are:
OS X 10.4.11
iMac G5
PowerPC G5  (3.1)
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
Memory: 1 GB
ATI Radeon 9600: 128 MB

All System Updates have been done.

I can email/pm both crashlogs (console.log and psclient_static.crash.log) if someone wants to have a look at them...

Edit: I just reset the ATI settings to lowest and client still crashes.

hiya Caarrie... the client crashes with both characters. The client goes through the motions of loading a PS map but crashes about half way through the process. My main character (klyros) was trying to leave Ojaveda when the client crashed. My new alt character (kran) hasn't had a chance to enter the PS world proper so I can't say which map the client is trying to be load (ie. I don't know where my alt character spawn point would be, although I assume it would be a hydlaa map so the alt character can go through the tutorial?).

P.S. I have tried going onto the IRC channel for PlaneShift but the last few times I have been hacked within minutes of entering... I'm sure there are ways of avoiding this but I am a complete noob when it comes to IRC...

ok.... after MANY MANY hours of going over and over the various fixes thinking I may have overwrote files in the updating process from the other night, watching the updater in console repeatedly trying to update certain files (which it did eventually until I was asked to hit [enter]) PlaneShift still wouldn't work... so I wiped it.

downloaded 4.01 from here: http://www.planeshift.it/download.html (i first downloaded (195MB) from the Internode link, but that didn't work (Error -1 ??? - arrrrrggggghhh!) so I downloaded AGAIN but from Xordan (344Mb))

also downloaded the additional psupdater patch from the same page.

fired up PlaneShift and it now works...

now... I didn't start going through this whole update process until PlaneShift was abruptly quiting on me as outlined in my first post. Up until then 4.01 had been running...

anyone have any ideas why this happened?

short answer: Something got broken :)

Long answer: Really! It seems as if a file in the ps-folder gets broken sometimes when PS crashes. This is what I experienced: I had a working 0.4.01-folder plus a copy of the whole folder. After one of the usual crashes of planeshift (after trying to quit it), the client suddenly did not work anymore but quit during load. I then tried the client in my backup-ps-folder and that worked usually. So what I would suggest you (to be dead-sure): Make a backup of your working ps-gamefolder and never (!) use that to actually play but as a backup only, from which you can get a working copy again.

yar... i have been thinking along the same lines - a lesson learnt... since this hiccup, i have been experiencing other problems with loading certain regions, out of bounds notifications and the sort, but it apparently is a known Mac PPC bug that seems to me varies between 10.3 10.4 and 10.5. So at this stage there is little I can do but check back for if/when a more stable (for my specs at least) version is released... or finally get around to getting myself an intel for at home...
