Your planeshift story.
« on: August 30, 2008, 09:27:42 pm »
I am new to planeshift.

I have been an open source guru for some time, and found planeshift a while back.  I set up an account a few months ago, but didn't really take time to download it as I was into another free one, that wasn't open source though.  Anyway, I was looking at building my own fps, and looking into crystalspace when I noticed planeshift was built using this engine.  I was pretty suprised as I did not know this and had known about both cool things previously.  So, I decided to see what crystalspace was made of and downloaded planeshift.  During this long period of time I set out to read up on this mmorpg.  I was quite amazed as it seemed to me that you guys were not just a bunch of video gamers, but an actual community with it's own game.  This drew me into being exited to play and see what it really was all about.  On entering I created my first character.  Wow, other games it takes a few seconds to create a character.  I took about 10 minutes.  This, however looking like a downfall is actually a very good thing.  The time spent was dealing with actually creating a character, not just a graphic.  I now have a Kran character names Larock, whose mother was famous and his father, well, I can't remember what my father was.  Lol  Anyways, it really created my character not just a graphic like I said.  Then on entering a game, I found the coolest thing that I had never seen before in an mmorpg.  It uses bots for the npcs.  This was just a cool geeky happiness I felt inside me.  I was also very amazed at how well the game ran.  I even played it while having a few other programs running, which always seems to crash other mmorpgs.  It wasn't bouncy, and didn't seem too buggy.  I am still in the beginning of the tutorial as I did not have time to make it passed it before the recent server downage.  And I am thinking I might have to restart my character, which will be alright, as the last time I played clicking on stuff didn't want to work for me, and I dropped the coal trying to get it to the furnace but was not able to pick it back up again.  Hehehe.  Anyways, yeah.  I would have to say already though I am telling my friends about it.  Good job to the Planeshift team for there great work.

So what is everyone elses meeting planeshift story?

Kran are genderless, so as of now "mother" and "father" doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in char creation.

I started playing this game six years ago when I first saw it on SourceForge.  Unlike other free MMO franeworks like WorldForge and Arianne (which are still crap) PlaneShift-the-engine was the only one that had a playable demo back then and it was easy to set up.

I would have to agree with worldforge and Arianne.  I had looked at those a while back when interested in making my own mmorpg.  But I lost interest in that project for now.

I'd agree with you there- as others, I think, have mentioned, WorldForge hasn't made any significant progress in two or so years. As for Arianne, I discarded that possibility pretty soon after looking at the website. RealmCrafter seems like the only decent, affordable MMO engine out there at the moment (apart from the PS engine, I suppose).

Anyway, I found Planeshift the same way, as I remember. I was looking for an MMO engine, and decided to try the game instead.

Just thought i would interject this, but PlaneShift is the only, multiple platform MMORPG that is playable on the internet. And by playable i mean decent graphics, good story line and can appeal to all ages.

Not making this up, go see for yourself.

How can your kran character even have parents? What, do they mix in their pieces of rock and it creates a 8 ft' tall blue stone monster?
Anyway, I started playing a year ago. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. SO much better than anything I played before (because I had never roleplayed before, so it was a original, for me) although, I could never manage to craft anything, or mine anything. Oh well, good times.
We all know ylians have the package, the looks, the brain, pretty much all of it, I feel guilty.

Lol, kran players should say I was born of the cliff near oja, instead of listing parents
