- The Lost Menki -

It was a beautiful spring day full of joy and playfulness for the Kaibu family as they went to the country-side for a picnic, bathing, and clackering around; but ultimately it was a day never to be forgotten.

Edig was always the adventurous one.  He was always the first in the bath pretending to swim around (when he was really just walking in the shallow end pretending to be swimming) or he was the first to jump over the clacker, or run between the Trepor's legs. And he always heard the same thing jump from his Mother's mouth, "Edig, please be careful.  We don't want you getting hurt and not be able to play anymore now do we?"  His Mother's words would give him pause for all of a couple of minutes, then he'd be at it again.

***

Its those times he remembers now as he sits near the bathtub at the top of the world and watching the little people run by him far below.  He looks over to the pool of water and begins to undress to his tribal clothes.  As he take off each of his leathers, he folds them carefully and gently and removes any traces of dust or dirt that may have gotten on them during his travels.

As he slips in the warmish water his mind again slips back to that fateful day.

***

"Edig? Time for lunch sweetheart." his Mom shouts while looking around for him.

"Coming" he shouts back.

Lunch was always his favorite time of the day because it usually meant unrestrained frolicking for hours afterwards.  If they were lucky, it was also after lunch that Dad would spend time with them teaching them how to stalk properly; how to sneak up to a clacker and not have it even notice you until too late.  Then you JUMP into the air and yell, "Clacker Jump."  By the time the clacker figured out what was going on, you were well on your way to the next clacker doing the same thing.  Dad was the best teacher for those things.  Mom just enjoyed watching while cleaning up from the picnic.

***

The water feels particularly good today.  His tired and sore muscles start to relax in the warmish water and the feeling of weightlessness begins to relax him.  It's been a long time since he's reflected on that day.  Sadly for Edig, he can still remember his Mother's and Father's faces; their kind and gentle gazes and smiles that would light up the entire ultic.

He glances around and stands up slightly to make sure no one has followed him and then relaxes again into the soothing caress of the water.

***

"Baltan? Where's Edig, Chora, and Dunar?"

"They were just playing with the clackers over by the lake."

"But they're not there now!"

"Oh Talad, please don't tell me they fell in the Lake!"

Edig's Mother and Father suddenly rush to the lake only to find it empty.  "But where can they be?" his mother questions.

"EDIG, CHORA, DUNAR...  TIME TO GO.  COME ON BACK." Edig's father shouts out with a slight tremble in his voice.
"Edig?  Chora?  Dunar?  Right now or so help me Talad you'll be grounded for a month." Edig's mother responds after a short silence.

Edig, his sister and brother are too far away to hear their parents voices.  They've decided to go Trepor tipping and wandered just beyond their known territory, which also happens to be just out of earshot of the picnic site.  Farther and farther down the path they go until finally they come to an open spot where the Trepors graze.  Chora gets bored and decides she's going to head back; but which way?

She looks around carefully, looks back to her brothers, and heads out in the wrong direction never to be seen again.  The boys of course are too busy to notice as they spot a particularly large trepor to run through.

***

While sitting in the water, he begins to stretch out and lets the water sooth his nerves.  He stretches his toes, and legs.  He yawns, rubs his thigh where the faint scar-type tattoo sits, and begins to drift off again.

***

The search lasted for hours with people looking in all directions, but it wasn't meant to be that Edig and his brother were found that day.  In fact, it wasn't meant for the boys to be found at all.  When the search was finally called off, the pain Edig's parents felt was so strong they took the rest of his brothers and sisters, and moved to one of the lower levels.

Edig and Dunar were separated a couple of years later.

***

Edig's ears suddenly flatten against the top of his head as he realizes he is not alone.  He opens his eyes and stares across the water at a familiar face.  His ears relax and tears flow suddenly.

"It's been a while you son-of-a-Clacker" Edig says to break the silence.
"Yeah.  I've been off fighting in the labyrinth.  How you been?"
"Okay I guess."

A few minutes of silence ensue and then Edig asks, "Say Dunar, you ever see Chora?"

The brothers suddenly run to embrace each other, then spend the rest of the day reminiscing.  At the end of the day, they look at each other solemnly and say good-bye.

- The Naming -

Two lone older figures fuss with their tribals as they prepare for a big day.

"I don't know what all the fuss is about.  Why do I have to go to this thing anyway?!"
"Oh hush ya old fool.  You know you're as happy as a clacker, Besides, he's your grandson."
"Get on with it.  Let's go or we'll be late to this one too."

Finally arriving at the Temple of Talad, Dunar and Vennrri greet the rest of the family.

"Oh thank Talad you both arrived savely. Did you have any troubles on the way?" a younger woman asks.
"No, the paths were well lit and free of troubles." the older Dunar responds.  "We actually arrived last night."
"Why didn't you come get one of us, you could have sayed with us." the young mother responded.
"Yeah well... we stayed at the inn. We didn't want to bother anyone.  Besides, we were tired and I just wanted a fresh bed to lay down in.  We'll spend plenty of time with you honey, but this is your moment," shifting his eyes downward to her arms he continues, "besides it's really about the kit.  After today we can finally call him by his name."
Grinning from ear to ear, Flena moves off to have the ceremony begin.

It has been quite a while in this families history that so many had gathered in one place for such an occassion, but naming ceremonies were still held in the highest regard for this family and today is no exception.  For the first time in this family's history, a new name will be given rather than giving a name from another family member or trusted friend.

The High Priest approaches Flena, reaches out for the kit in her arms and takes him to a table to begin the ceremony.  Other priests now join the High Priest and the naming begins.  Two of the attending priests begin offering prayers to Talad while the other priest assists with the examination.  Suddenly, a silence overtakes the priests at the table and Baltan, the kit's father, is called to the Altar.

"Were you aware of the mark?" the High Priest asks.
"My son is marked?"
The High Priest gently moves some fur to the side on the kit's upper right thigh to reveal what looks like a pawprint.

"My son is marked!" Baltan beams back to the crowd who is now wondering what the fuss is all about and he says louder, "MY SON IS MARKED."
A happy murmur decends over the crowd and the High Priest holds up his hands to silence the crowd.
"We have never seen such a mark in all our days.  Perhaps one of your elders will know what it means.  I suggest for now we treat this kit normally and let him enjoy himself while he still can." The priest whispers to Baltan who nods in response and goes back to his seat.

"How did you miss such a mark?" Baltan asks Flena.
Looking embarassed, Flena responds, "I never thought to look."

The priests continue their prayers and the High Priest finishes the examination.  He performs other prayers and various blessings then holds the child up for all to see.
"This child is born to us to raise and cherish as Talad has done with us.  We must raise him to be strong and wise.  No one is raised by only their parents.  We must all watch over this child and see to it that he is developing, happy and educated."  The priest then looks to Flena, "What is the name your family has chosen for this young one.  How do we present him to Talad?"

Flena stands as does the rest of the family and a beautiful chant begins.  Though the chant is unrehursed and only sung during a naming it is as if they have practiced for months.  The melodies and harmonies blend and send prayers of thanksgiving and of hope to the God Talad.  Then, as if by some mystical cue, in one voice they speak the name.

"EDIG KAIBU"

The priest then turns back to the altar holding the child high and proclaims, "Oh Mighty Talad, we present to you a child born of your people, examined by your priests, and loved by his parents.  We give to your service, this child."

At the moment the High Priest says the childs name, a barely noticable clear haze descends from the ceiling and covers the child, but no one other than the priests notice the event.

The High Priest calls the parents and grandparents to the altar to perform the final part of the ceremony.  The child is held gently, but firmly by the father and the skin on the stomache is gently stretched by the grandparents while the mother lovingly tattoos the symbol.  The child begins to cry until his father peeks his head into the child's view and then grins up at his father and tries to grab a whisker.

When Flena finishes the marking, the High Priest again hold up the child, but is stopped by another child now approaching the altar.  Dunar reaches up for his brother and puts a small crystal shard into his tiny paw, then walks back to his seat smiling.

The priest now holds the child up to the crowd and says,

"This child is." he pauses to show everyone present the child, "Edig Kaibu.  All may now use his name.  May Talad guide him and keep him safe."

Chora the Explora - Part 1
« Reply #3 on: September 08, 2008, 02:17:43 am »
(This story pics up from where she left the boys in - The Lost Menki - )
(This story is also intentionally written in two tenses...  Some parts are memories, and some are very real flashbacks for her, as if she is truly there...  It's challenging and not quite correct to put the two together, but it will make sense and you should be able to figure it all out.)

- Chora the Explora -  Part 1

She looked around carefully, looked back to her brothers, and headed back to the picnic site.  The boys were of course oblivious to anything other than the thought of tripping a trepor and didn't notice their sister heading in the wrong direction.

Chora should have known better than to let her brothers talk her into going trepor tripping, but somehow Edig made things seem so fun that she just couldn't resist.  Now, separated from him and Dunar, all she could do was wish to be near them.

Chora suddenly begins to feel a rush of emotion after what seems like an eternity of walking passes by.  Softly crying she stops to see if she can hear the faintest sounds of laughter or her parents, but only silence responded to her internal plea for help.

"Mommy!" Chora screams, "Please help me!!!"
Silence
"Mommy!" She screams again as tears finally begin to flow freely as the realization of what is happening sets in.
Deciding turning around is the best bet, she tries to set out for where she last saw her brothers.

***

Usually there's a reason for Chora to experience her own past so powerfully and as she wakes from her daydream Chora sits up and looks around to see why she is suddenly remembering an event she has chosen not to deal with for many years.

"Rrohisi noli sa Chora?" (trans. You are not well Chora?)
"Oh, I'm sorry ubyna.  My... lojh is restless." Chora looks off in the distance.
"A restless spirit is nothing to take lightly my dear. No wonder you don't look well."
"I know mama. It's just that I keep thinking he needs me."
"You had the past look again?"
Chora nods to her mother and tears began to swell in her eyes. Of all her siblings, she was closest to one even though he was closer to his brother.
"Then you must go and try to find him. Your spirit and your heart will not rest until you do.  At least go and see if he is alright, if he is, then return to us if you chose, if he isn't, help where you can and be there for him.  But my dear, you must follow your spirit."  Tears begin to flow for the older Rabbani Enkiduyba and the two sole figures walk arm in arm back to the lone cottage.

As she puts some things together for her possibly long journey, Chora begins to remember the day of her separation from her previous family.

***

As the sky begins to darken, so too does Chora's hopes for finding her family.  She has never been on her own before and the thought of what might be out here in the open is beginning to take it's toll on her emotionally.  Looking tired she begins to run through the country side trying to find any trace of her brothers.  Suddenly she feels drawn down a path she hadn't noticed and slows down.  As she approaches one of the paths she begins to feel more at ease and less apprehensive.

Chora senses something comfortable and familiar about the path and finally decides to continue.  As night descends around her, she begins to feel tired and sleepy.  Without even thinking she is drawn to what appears to be an empty hut with a single fur in it.  Near the fur is enough hot soup for one person.  Timidly and not too loud, she calls out for whom ever may be around.  When no one comes, she drinks the soup and lays down on the fur.  Quickly she is engulfed with peace and falls off to dream of Clackers and her family.

- Chora the Explora -  Part 2

A good stretch always feels so good no matter where you are or what the situation.  Strange... she didn't remember a blanket on the fur.  As she looks around her mind drifts to yesterday and getting lost.  Finally she thinks to herself that she's just paranoid.  As she sniffs the air to see if anyone's been there, she catches a whiff of food just outside the hut.

She pulls the blanket off herself and emerges from the hut carefully so as not to upset who ever is out there only to discover no one is around.  As she look carefully she see's a walking stick down the road a bit, a bag with some fresh food already packed and ready to go, the bowl with morning soup, fresh Akkaio tribals for someone her age, and a note written in Enkien (which she is unable to read).

For some unknown reason, Chora has the distinct impression this is all for her.  Totally comfortable in her surroundings, she eats the soup slowly making sure not to burn herself.  She take the tribals back into the hut, changes and reemerges ready for what she assumes is a new adventure or game.  "I'll bet Dunar is doing this."

As she gathers everything together, including the two bowls, she heads in the direction of the walking stick and straps the bag to her back.  She looks around one last time, grabs the stick and continues walking in the same direction she started in.

***

It seems so long ago that Chora was walking this same path, but only in the other direction.  She's used this path countless times, but never for this reason.  As she approaches the old and worn hut, she smiles with the memory of that first night now fresh in her mind.

The hut was an old hunting hut; one used by anyone who needed it for the night or however long.  It vaguely resembled an ultic so whoever built it had to be Enkidukai.  All that was required in order to use it was some sense of care to not burn it down or otherwise destroy it.

There was a fire pit which has been freshly cleaned out by whoever used it last, but as she makes her way around the camp, something oddly familiar creeps into her mind.  A memory of something she hadn't remembered in all the time she's been separated from her first family: they lived near Dsar Akkaio in Ojaveda, just outside the north gates.

It's been such a long time since she was there, but as she picks up her bag, she heads out down another path on the way to Oja.

***

Ahead of her, Chora sees a clearing with lots of flowers and trees.  She's beginning to feel tired anyway and decides to stop for a little while for some rest.  She pulls off the bag and reaches in to see what kind of food has been packed.  She pulls out water skin and drinks from it, then takes a bite of some of the preserved clacker meat.  As she looks around, she almost thinks she sees someone or something in the tall grass up ahead, but shakes her head and clears her mind.

After resting a bit, she gets up, then begins walking down the path again.

Hours later she comes upon a not too small dwelling and smoke coming out of the chimney.  A Rabbani woman comes out of the building and approaches Chora.

"We thought you'd never get here child."

The voice is soft and soothing to Chora, but she just stands there looking around hoping to see Dunar.

"I'm happy to see the tribal clothes fit you well."
"You left those for me?" Chora responds in a soft voice, still expecting to see her brother.

The woman nods at Chora and then says, "Your brother had nothing to do with this I'm afraid.  I don't know where he is.  I'm sorry."  While walking up to Chora very slowly she continues, "you are more than welcome to stay if you'd like and my husband will try to help you find your family in the morning."

Feeling tired from the day long walk, Chora nods and goes into the house with the Enkiduyba.

***

Walking up to the large round doors, she is immediately reminded of the days of chasing the kikiri through the streets and making the shopkeepers fuss over all the noise.  Smiling softly she walks up to Bhurral she begins looking for information.

"Hello," Chora Chimes.
"Good day to you traveler, how can I help you."
"I'm looking for a family that may have lived here a long time ago."
"I know most folk who are here.  What's their family name?" Bhurral asks.
"Kaibu."
"Now there's a name I remember.  Seems to me quite some time ago, just after three of their children disappeared, they moved to one of the lower levels.  How do you know them?"
"I think I'm their daughter" Chora responds.
"Truly unfortunate.  I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help." But then Bhurral suddenly remembers something and calls back to Chora before she leaves, "Wait. One of your brothers," she looks down as if trying to remember, "Edig, yes...  Edig.  He delivers things every now and then.  He is your lost brother right?"

Smiling, Chora spends a few more moment with Bhurral who tells her that Edig occasionally makes deliveries to Oja though he spends most of his time North of Hydlaa.

With a new found hope Chora sets off for Hydlaa.

- Chora the Explora -  Part 3

As the messenger leave the house, Chora looks up just as he looks down with a caring and understanding face.

The tall Rabbani Enkiduyba comes out of the house and finds Chora sitting next to the path by the road.  "You are up early little one."
Chora looks up at the woman, "How did you know my name or my brothers name?"
"The sky sure is a beautiful shade of Azure this morning." the woman responds and looks up into the sky.  "I promised my husband would take you to find your family, but it is a full day journey just to get back to the camp you my dear.  And I suspect it took you about a day to get to the camp?"

Chora nods with tears in her eyes.

"Then it's settled.  We need to pack for at least 4 days for the trip to and from the house, and another couple of days to find your family.  Where did you say your family lived?  Dsar Sarraghi wasn't it?"
Chora nods.
"There's just one small problem my dear, the Dsar has been closed.  No one is allowed in or out.  The messenger that just left gave us that information.  I inquired about your family, but he doesn't know if they were in there or not when the doors closed.  I'm so sorry my dear, but you are going to have to decide what you wish to do next."

Without a tear Chora looks up into the Azure sky and asks, "What are my options?"

***

As she sniffs the air, Chora begins taking off her leather clothes revealing only her tribals.  Gently and slowly she slips into the water of the pool at the top of the hill with its three pillars and begins cleaning herself.

Taking the time to relax doesn't come often so she lavishes every moment and even sings an old rhyme she learned from her mother.

"Mist covers the city in a blanket
of
   Cold,
Eyes open wide to view the
new
   Gold.

The flowers begin their early
morning
   Rise,
While trees start to sing of all that
is
   Wise.

So sing a new song for the sun
rises
   New
As we sit and we watch the ripe
Azure
   Hew."

At the very moment she finishes her song, she notices someone else in the area.

"Now, don't think I'm here to cause you any harm. I won't hurt you." says the man.

Chora looks at the man and decides quickly he's telling the truth.  She momentarily studies him and notices a long coat, blue vest, and of all things spectacles.  What gets her attention however are the two blade hanging off of his corded belt.

The Menki says quickly, "Don't worry, these are only used if needed.  I doubt I'll need them here." and then opens his palms to Chora.

She looks down slightly and says, "You smell of soot."
The Menki nods, "It's an old habit, and you know what they say about habits."
Chora nods slowly and then extends a paw towards the water.
"Thank you." as he prepares himself for a dip, he takes a moment to notice this young woman with unusual Azure blue eyes.  Her caressing style of movement captures his thoughts only for a moment and reminds him of someone very dear to him.

***

As Chora enters the woman's house she notices the simply but elegant surroundings.  The furnishings are arranged in a circular pattern around a central fire pit in the middle of the room.  Painted wall hangs dot the walls and Azure dyed furs are splayed out across the floors.

"I think I made my decision."

(I don't know why this is suddenly turning into an epic, but please be patient with me as I continue to develop the story.  Also please understand this has all been a first draft.  I may go through and edit at another time.  I've a feeling it's almost complete, but there may yet be much more undiscovered 'stuff' that needs to be resolved.  Methanks.  -Edig-  )

- Chora the Explora -  Part 4

Walking into the expanse of Dsar Akkaio, it became quite obvious that there was something wrong.  There was no longer the hustle and bustle of life with people passing through the 4 main gates.  Those that were still there had somber faces as if struck with deadly news.  Tentatively, Chora approached one of the passersby, “Where is my family? They lived in Dsar Sarraghi.”

The only response was the pointing of a finger to a sign on the now closed door to the Dsar Chora was talking about.  With the understanding that what she had been told was true, tears begin to stream down her face as she approaches the door.  The woman accompanying her begins to read:

“This is the door that opens to Dsar Sarraghi.  It is currently closed because of quarantine.  Rumour has it the famous explorer Emosyn Rabani returned,” the old woman mutters the rest until, “... and the plague spread to most of the other dsars.  The doors have since been shut to protect Dsar Akkaio and the rest of Yliakum.”

Chora begins to run from person to person in a panic asking about her family.  From the sad expressions on their faces it becomes painfully obvious they haven't a clue what happened to the Kaibu family. As mental, physical and emotional exhaustion takes over, Chora sits on the ground still crying and looking dazed.

Very slowly, as if with great purpose, the husband of the woman walks up to Chora and gently lifts her up off the floor.  She immediately places her arms around his neck and they begin their long journey back to the couple's home.

***

“What do you mean by the 'Labyrinths'?” Chora asks while tilting her head slowly.
The Menki sighs and begins a long story of love and loss.  He pauses occasionally only to wipe the “dust” from his eyes and clear his throat. The story he recounts is full of mystery, love, loss, and hope.  As if drawn into the story itself, Chora begins to watch with fascination the characters come alive in her mind.  Finally they finish their dance of fate and her eyes settle once again on the person sitting opposite of her.

“You asked me questions as if you already knew the answers.” he begins. “But tell me why you are out here in the middle of no where. You won't have me believe you are here just in passing. Are you looking for something?” He pauses watching her reaction, “or someone?”

Chora shoots the Menki a look of sudden distrust, but then relaxes quickly realizing he is only searching for information about her.  With a soft, almost unseen smile, she tells the individual across from her a story of deep loss, regret, and fear.

Finishing her story she says, “I just don't understand the draw I feel inside.  It's as if his soul is crying out to me that he's in pain and needs my help.  I just don't know why now after all these years.”

“Maybe its because of your training.” the Menki responds.
Nodding her head she says, “Perhaps. I just wish I knew for sure.  I pray he's okay, but I just don't know.”
“Try reaching out to him with your soul. Perhaps somehow you two will connect in a way you would have never expected.” Again clearing the 'dust' from his eye he continues, “Oftentimes when we truly love someone, our feelings get lost in the translation between our mind and our heart. Remember your friend for who he is to you.  Reach out with your heart and soul. Maybe then you'll be able to see him a little clearer.”

Chora gets up to dry off, gather her things, put her leather clothes back on, then pausing to look at the Menki in the pool of water she says, “My brother.  I'm looking for my brother Edig.”  Then giving him one last look she says, “and my name is Chora.  Thank you for your shoulder.”

Without giving him a chance to respond she runs off in the direction of Hydlaa.

***

“Carry her upstairs and lets get her settled as quickly as possible. She'll need time to heal and time to forgive herself for getting lost. Mark my words Tenosh, she'll blame herself for all of this.”

Nodding to her he responds, “Yes, but we will love her all the same. It will be a welcome change to have the pitter-patter of paws around the house. We will treat her as one of our very own.”
“Yes. Our very own. A daughter.” Noli looks lovingly at her husband and the two walk quietly out of Chora's new room.

The next morning Noli and Tenosh are in the kitchen when Chora walks in still rubbing the sleep from her eyes, “you let me sleep so late.”
“You needed the rest child. There will be plenty of mornings of early rising. For now though, I think we can manage.” Noli tells her.
Chora only nods her response while remembering the week's events.
“Have some breakfast. You can help me collect some water from the river later on and then perhaps we can talk about what you would like to do.”
Nervously Chora asks, “You mean I still have a choice?”
“Of course dear. You don't think we'd actually keep you here against your will do you?”
“What if I would maybe want to stay here with both of you?”

Not letting Chora see, Noli quickly clutches her chest and looks at her husband with tears in her eyes. Then turning to Chora and smiling she says, “Of course you would be welcome to stay as long as you wish my dear.”

Chora responds with a smile and question, “Would I be an only child here or do I have new brothers and sisters I don't yet know about?”

***

After the unusually silent meal at Kada-El's tavern, Chora gets up and prepares to leave for the Bronze Doors.  As she makes her way to the entrance, she's stopped by a familiar face.

“Chandopi? Is that really you?”
“Chora! Why yes it is me. How strange that we should meet here.  I was just getting ready to go to the Bronze Doors.  One of our deliverymen hasn't returned with the assurance of payment note and we're starting to get worried.”
“What a coincidence.  I was just getting ready to head that way myself.  Mind if I join you?”

((As you read this final installment of the Chora Series, please remember that these have all been first drafts.  I may, as time allows, or if other circumstances allow, edit them and improve upon them.  Thanks for the patience you've all show.  I hope it was worth the wait.))

Chora the Explora – Part 5

If laughter is indeed the best medicine then Chora is nearing complete recovery.  Her laughter carries over tall grasses and wild flowers as she chases Noli in an elaborate dance of “Catch Me If You Can”.  Unknown to the participants of this game is that for many centuries Enkidukai have used such games to teach their children how to fend for themselves without the children even knowing that they are even learning anything at all and today is no different in that regard.  However, the type of chase is vastly different.

“Use your mind to find me Chora.  Don't run around aimlessly.  Settle yourself, breath deeply, let all your worries float away from you, then let yourself reach out with your mind to find me.”

Chora taps Noli lightly on the shoulder and smiles, “I already did.” and then bursts out laughing as Noli begins tickling her.
“My, my you are a fast learner.” Noli remarks with a proud grin.

“Let's take a break and sit under the tree for a bit.” Noli pauses and looks at Chora seriously for a moment, “Tell me child, what have you learned today?”
Chora pauses as if deep in thought and then says, “That there is a lot of information in the silence.”

Noli nods her head proudly at Chora, pulls out an azure way glyph and says, “It's time for you to learn more my Dear.”

“But I don't understand Chora.  I thought the rumor was your parents moved to a lower level,”  Chandopi begins, “but you say you never saw them again?”
“Chan,” Chora sighs, “I didn't know about the rumor until just a short time ago.  Besides I kind of forgotten what they look like. I don't think I'd recognize them if I ever saw them again.  My new family has been very good to me and I love them very much.”
“Works for me! Now come on. Let's go find this mysterious person you're looking for.”
Chora nods and takes a moment to settle herself.  Slowly, she looks off towards the openness of of the countryside and starts walking North.

Never in her wildest dreams did she ever think she would come upon such a scene as the one haunting her now.  In the distance she can see a male Enkidukai being tortured while what appear to be rogues with a deep blue aura around their eyes seem to be taking great pleasure in the screams emitted by the young hostage.  Remaining out of sight for the moment, Chora and Chandopi try to come up with a plan.

“All that will serve to do is get him killed.”
“But at least then he'll be in the relative safety of the Death Realm.  He'll have a better chance there than he will at the mercies of those horrible creatures.” Responds Chora.
Shocked, Chandopi continues, “But if he's never died before, he won't know his way out!  There are horrors down there Chora that no one should see.” Chandopi lowers her head, “I should know.  I've been there before.”
Chora places a hand on her friends shoulder, “Do you have a better idea?”
“No.”
“If all goes well, then he'll reemerge from the depths with only a bad memory of the event, but he'll be alive. At least he won't be suffering as he is now.”
“Okay, what do I do?”
“Just distract them long enough for me to get a clear shot at him.  I love him so much, but he doesn't deserve to suffer like this and we are no match for those rogues.”

From behind them a familiar voice quietly greets them, “Need a hand?”
Chora looks up from what she is doing and smiles with a tear in her eye. “Now we stand a chance.”

“Ubyna? Are their other ways of magic?”
Noli looks shocked for a moment and responds, “You know that's the first time you've ever called me mom?”
Smiling, but looking down Chora says, “I hope you don't mind, but...”
“Mind? My child I have been longing for the day!”

After the two embrace Noli says, “Now. Tell me. Why this sudden interest in other ways of magic?”
“I had a dream where I had to fend off some bad people and I was shooting arrows, but I didn't have a bow.”
Without flinching Noli asks, “What color were the arrows?”
“Blueish, but kinda see through.”
“Blue way.” Noli nods, “not that different from what we use now, but I won't be able to teach you.  For that you will have to talk to,” Noli pauses and looks at Chora, “your father.”
Chora nods and smiles back at Noli.  “Is it a difficult way?”
“I don't think so, but like I said, Tenosh knows better than I do.” Noli pauses for a moment then asks Chora, “Who is the young one you see in your dreams?  Why are you helping him?”

Chora begins to tell Noli of the dream in which a young Menki got lost in a system of caves near the edge of the first level.  She shares the description of the men with blue eyes and how the young Menki howls in pain when ever they are near him. She and some other people she couldn't see were trying to help him and she was shooting arrows, but she didn't see where they went.
“I don't know for sure, but I think I knew the Menki.  He almost looked like one of my brothers from before.”

With a concerned look on her face Noli sends Chora of to speak with Tenosh.

“Okay, does everyone know what they are doing?”
As Chora looks at both of her friends, they nod in response.
“Good.  Let's get this over with.”

Slowly they get up from their hiding spot and approach the men with blue eyes.  All of a sudden blue eyed men begin coming at them from all directions.

“We didn't expect this to happen so just do what ever you can!” Chora yells out as she dodges a dagger.

Finally Chora gets close enough to see the face of the young Menki hostage and looks with horror at her bloodied brother. “Edig!” she screams with tears beginning to cascade down her face. “No!  I Can't!” She screams out with a piercing pain in her voice.

Her brother Edig looks up in time to see the point of a broadsword coming out the front of his sister's chest. At that very same moment another man approaches Chora and shoves something in her mouth and holds his hand in place until she swallows.  A black stained line in the corner of her mouth is all that remains of whatever she swallowed.

After the two men drop Chora to the ground, one of her friends approaches her while still fighting off the other rogues.  “Chan, get them off of me for a sec would ya?”

As Chandopi sprints into action, the friend looks at Chora's brother and then at Chora.  With her last bit of strength Chora yells out to Edig, “I've always loved you!”.  Before she passes out, and so the last thing Edig sees is his smiling sister, the Menki lets loose a single fireball which instantly kills Chora's brother.  Then looking down at Chora he says, “At least he saw you smiling and he has a better chance in the Death Realm. Let see about getting you out of here.”

Noli's tear filled eyes look down at her daughter. “There is nothing more anyone can do. She will not survive the night.  She will,” her voice cracks for a moment, “she will suffer true death.”
Then turning to the friend who helped her, “I want to thank you young man for bringing her back to us.  I don't know how you managed to do it; bring her all the way back here so quickly, but thank you.” “Do you know if her brother survived the Death Realm?”

“I don't know yet, but I will keep an eye out for him.  If he could survive what I saw, then I have no doubt that he survived down there.  He was suffering pretty badly when we got there.”
Nodding slowly Noli responds, “Chora will be pleased her brother will be looked after by you.  Is there anything, anything at all you need?”
“No.” Then looking down, the Menki says, “Tell her...  tell her thanks.  She'll understand I hope.”

Before he walks out the door, a sweet melody chills the air.  The sudden realization that Chora has passed away brings a strange sense of belonging to the young man who helped her.

As he listens to the rhyme, he wonders of the kit and his own new life to come.

“Winter...
Freezes all the joy and happiness,
smiles and laughs,
and suspends them so that each lasts as though they will continue for an eternity.

Spring...
Melts away the promise of joy
to expose the realistic hardship that life deals with such cunning and perfection.

Summer...
brings the needed re-birth
of character
and personality
that so effects the way the charmflowers bloom to a victorious glory.

Fall...
is the time for relaxing and
blessing counting
as the hibernation for an endless cycle weighs down on our minds and we begin...

                                Just Passing Time"
