flat stairs/ladders
« on: October 21, 2008, 03:47:33 am »
The problem with stairs and ladders is that you have individually created each step, with gaps in between. It would not only be easier, but also a lot more convenient, if you changed it so that the actual thing the character runs up is a completely flat surface that is just rendered with see-through parts for gaps between stairs. In BD, the ladders to get to the mine area cause you to have to switch run mode on and try an jump from rung to rung. Replace it with a steep, flat surface with coded to allow players to walk on it despite the steep incline, paint the texture with invisible parts and there you go, problem solved
There is an alternative, more probable theory that 9/11 was in fact caused by Hanson's 1997 smash hit 'MMMBop.'

Kind've hard to do that when you can't climb such steep inclines in the first place.

I may be an anomoly, but I actually appreciated (that may be the wrong word..) that I fell through a ladder at the far outposts at Bronze Doors. It taught Roled a lesson, to look before he runs, and added to the sense of danger and care to be taken. I know it must be more work for the dev but this little elf enjoyed (again, not exactly the right word!) experiences the consequences of his inattention paid to his immediate reality.

Sometimes it adds a little realism, yes, but the thing that caused me was when, twice in a row, I fell through the grating that makes up much of the path through the DR and got permastuck, the second time I got /unstick blocked and had to /die, which wasn't that bad seeing as I was already in DR but it was very annoying

Ever notice how climbing is supposed to be a skill?  I don't know why you're asking for something that is temporary.

some ladders you can walk up , some are not as refined
and some if you hit the right angle you walk up.

the ladders are still under construction.

but if i might add a suggestion.

that ladders are a differnt interface (alot like other games)
that when you touch a ladder you change a stance to a climing stance
and when you leave the ladder climbing zone (ie the top ) you change back to a walking stance.

as Ladders are meant to be differnt to climbing

Yeah, climb skill relates to mountains/walls, children can (theoretically) climb ladders, though in PS I've seen ladders with each step about 1m apart, would make it a hell of a difficult climb for a dwarf

I will create a dwarf proof fortress with largely spaces ladder steps. Muahaha !

But seriously it takes me about a minute and a half to get up the DR ladder. The only fix for that i found is to strafe. That is realy fast compared to the constant bump up bump down approach.
If I stand on the axis of the world will you mind if I say that the world revolves around me ?

Somehow I found the BG ladders much better nowadays. I'm under the impression that's because we (dwarves) don't jump as high as before.

I'd like the characters to be slowed down in stairs, as well as on some ladders like in the dungeon. Not because of danger of difficulty, only because it is visually very odd, even when walking.
