What to do at white screen?

OK... finally found a few threads that were able to walk me through installing... sheesh!
So... I launch the game, and it goes to the all-white screen with the wind-chime sounding music.
I dont want to sound like a total noob, but... what do I do now?
I have tried as many different key strokes and mouse clicks and anything else I can think, but I don't guess I know how to go past that screen.
The confounding part, is that I can't even figure out how to exit the game, either... I cant alt tab away from it or ctrl alt delete...  I end up having to jab the power button for a few seconds and restart the puter from the ground up.

and you have not even told us your os or anything about your pc, what are your EXACT system stats, what have you done EXACTLY, have you tried to update your graphics card drivers to latest, what screen res is your system set to, have you tried to change the ps res in pssetup?

Sorry.  I didn't realize that game play would be different for each operating system.
I am running on Ubuntu 8.04
My "EXACT" system specs are:
Asus A7V8X mobo
Athlon XP 2200+
2 Gb RAM
GeForce 6200

What I have done "EXACTLY" is to click on the Planeshift Icon, waited for the white screen to come up, and then I have:
Tried clicking anywhere and everywhere on the screen
Pressed every key on the keyboard
Pressed a wide variety of key combinations, including Alt + everything, Ctrl + everything, and even a good amount of Ctrl-Alt + everything. (Well, obviously not F1-F4)
Restarted the computer
Gone into the setup program and tried a few different resolutions and settings, repeating the above process for several hours, launching the game from both the pssetup cmdbutton, and also from the normal icon in the menu tree before realizing that the white screen is simply an impassable obstacle.
Then I spent an hour or so looking through these forums and elsewhere online, but could not find the instructions for getting past this screen.
Then I posted my question here.

I updated my graphics drivers last... Thursday (?)... if memory serves.  When you say "the latest", is there a specific driver version I should be using? Or is that just a generic suggestion?

My system is set to 1680 X 1050

Yes, I tried to change the ps res in pssetup.

after you have waited and the game seems to have crashed, reboot and see what is in that file, and paste it in a reply to this thread.

Sorry, only guessing...

Have you tried to start the game NOT in fullscreen? (checkbox in pssetup below the resolution)?
Do you use any desktop effects (compiz windows manager?)? If so try to start PS without compiz.

Works fine without compiz.
Sorry, but that just seems like quite a hassle just for one game, though.

Are you running .4.01 or .4.02? If you are not running .4.02, upgrade.
