It should be simple enough to modify the client to do this.  It is, after all, open source.

Being open source doesn\'t mean you\'re allowed to edit it, and still play on the server(s).

be nice if somone made a program that ran alongside PS that aloud voice support so that those who wanted to use it in PS could and those who wanted to stear clear of voices could also, and the voice communication had the same fuctions as the text one a normal talk could only be heard by surrounding players but if you held down say Y you could yell across a larger distance

Use teamspeak or something. We could get someone to host a server. That would work currently for everything execpt for the long/close rang stuff. But hey, we dont really need long range yet, do we?

Well, supposedly the lagg is because of your computer. How about an automatic \"Who is online\" thing, and then you could (by alt-tabbing or something) click on the name of the person, and add them to your buddie list, or invite them into your clan.

I personaly think anything is welcome if it helped the community...
So, if your program is useful, with no lag and such, it should be ok I suppose.

Teamspeak uses a 5,1 KB/s - 16,8 KB/s codec to talk... So, think of 100 people, all being on one server, how much load it would put on that server. just 5,1 KB/s having to be transmitted to 100 people is 5,1 * 100 .. That\'s still 510 KB/s that server would have to have in upload.. Or if two people happen to talk on the same time... Not a good idea. It can be used to talk to friends, or if you play CS, but don\'t expect a MMORPG to have voice communication.

well the people online thing might or might not be hard.... maybe...ill setup and host an ftp for it.... hmmnaybe a transparent window pinned to the top...i dont know about adding it to the game.... but the voice talk..... maybe the only way that would work is if it was a whole different thing... such net meeting (thank you Kundalf) but that would be a little aukward..... maybe something like a yahoo chat runing in the backround... i dunno post somemore. :)

Perhaps if a peer-to-peer voice chat system were implemented this would alleviate the load on the server and still give you the voice system you need. Since voice is non-essential to the game itself, non-essential features such as these could possibly be delivered via peer to peer so your voice won\'t lag if you were geographically close to your pal.
