Vista works like a dream for the computers I've got it on.  I don't think I could go back to XP if I tried at this point.

Even XP can be annoying if you have too much running in the background.
For real-time applications I used to set up a dual-boot for XP, a "normal" and a striped-down version without anti-virus, servers, even network. Then I was sure nothing would steal CPU cycles or freeze the application regularly for a few ms.

It wasn't for games but the same technique could be used in your case with Vista if you don't want to disable a whole set of features permanently just because you play now and then.

Don't blindly disable the protections as removing the firewall while you are connected to the network, it's suicidal (unless you are behind a router, and even so...). There are other attacks than running virus-infected files you have downloaded ;)

<3 XP

I am a linux user, but still i go back to XP every once in a while. With the recent updates, i must say its just about as stable as linux (minus the fact that you need security software  ;) ).

Its a shame they won't release DX10 for XP  :( i would bet my best pair of socks that it would handle it just fine.

After years using a Mac, I may be changing back to a PC at home soon (luckily I still have a Mac at work). I feel dirty but I need a different OS to run some stuff. I'll certainly avoid vista if I can. I expect disappointment but I don't want to be that disappointed...

Not my favourite OS, but Vista runs fine for me. Make sure you have the HW for it though, on older PC's it will be laggy or worse.

On a lighter note, Vista is the best TES Oblivion platform evarrrr!
