If I would make an item (book, map,...) and leave it, then
« on: November 07, 2008, 01:27:37 pm »
Hey,

Supose I would write a book or make a map and I would hide it somewhere, would it

  • remain were it is hiden until it is found
  • be cleaned up by the engine
  • remain linked to my account, so that it is not guaranteed to work/be present
and, now I'm talking about books and maps:
can Jayose copy custom maps and books, like he copies quest related books?

Well someone would prolly pick it up there aren't that many "secret" hiding places, it will disappear on a server reboot, and if a GM finds it it will be picked up and disposed of

Also, if some bugs are fixed, there may be a system put into place that automatically removes dropped items after a specified time.

so it all boils down to

you can't write books, treasure maps and so on because they are not persisted,

The thing is, I've been giving some thought to 'emersive rollplaying' and 'evil' Vs 'good'

There basicaly is no actual emersive experience as there are no consequences,
you can never ever change the world, because NPC's are immortal and static and the landscape fixed,
you can't ever become  a 'Hero' or a 'Sage' or even 'Famous' on the long term because as soon the server reboots all you did is gone,
you can't make a work or contribution to the world from within the roleplay, you can't write to the wall, you can't write a book, as it all goes away

if you want to make a contribution to the game, you either leave it and become a developer or you make something that solely consists of player (guild, settlement or something)

I, as a character in the game, would like to be a philosopher, and write a series of books, be a loner and see if what I leave lives after me,
unfortunately that is not possible

So all on all I think there should be at least some chance to leave a mark, otherwise every truly emerisve roleplayer should be a Kafkian depersed madman or a party animal because he has true proof his life is pointless

Dropped items do not vanish.

*edit- books are often left alone by GMs if they look like they have been placed for a specific RP reason.

If you drop a book, you can pick it up later and write in it. No one else can.

if you belong to a guild - you can write books and store them in the guild house... in a library...

I use them all the time...  sometimes I will use a book as a poster - but yes you have to have the player nearby to stop it being pilfered...

Some books, can be incorporated into the library if the settings teams like it... why not post the text via pm to a dev member?

because the whole point of the text is emersion and consequence, I don't want to file it to dev, doing so voids the statement of the text because it becomes static itself.

I understand that, from a system perspective, random, custom items kill the system, but I also think that IF one maintains central arguments about 'player reponsibility'  (as in organising events) and 'imersive experience'  (up to the level of licensing) one should provide in-game capabilities that extends beyond the player, in some way or another.
(you can't flyer, build houses,....)

There are ways to avoid system kill and still give various abilities to leave a trace: libraries could 'rent' space, at high rates, so that one can file a book, for some time or eternity IF he want to pay a shitload of tria, or mages could make items 'part of the world' for some time or always at incredible knowledge and resource costs. In this way one could pay for flyers, living till the event, if he can afford it and they would clean themselves afterwards

I'd like to raise this argument before the rules against it are cast in code

As far as I know, Jayose cannot copy maps or books, but you can store/load the contents of your books from a file on your computer. Simple buy blank books and load them up.

For the other things, you already have your answers.

On a more philosophical note, we are all passengers in life, do we mark our passage in any way? Does a scribble on a wall remain? Barely. The only way to survive is in people's memories, by doing something memorable. I've seen some people like that in PS, if you want to become one, there's nothing to stop you other than your own willingness and determination.

Quite.... Ever heard of Kada El's Tavern? Bet you never met the NPC called Kada El though. Because there isn't one. Kada El was a player :)
