How can i talk with the characters in the begin?

i dont know how to talk, chat with the characters in the begining.......she always says:

"as a general rule if you will say the last thing an npc told you to say it will work to make the dialogue proceed. Common triggers might be bout x or give me Y"

I dont understand sorry.....help me please.
