Offline Play
« on: November 20, 2008, 10:15:14 pm »
Is it possible (if yes, how?) to run planeshift (preferably 0.4.02) without an internet conection ? (I play in an i-café for "F"'s sake, I have a pc back home)
Not for developing a new one (I don't have the skills) but to learn more about the game.
I tried downloading the source code but I just couldn't find all the compilers needed for it. If there's a linky for a package with all the needed compilers (for Windows®)let me know. I red somewhere that I should run a server in able to play that way. Please HELP :sweatdrop:

This might help:

Compiling guide

It is does NOT provide however, the full version of the game. (quests, rules etc. are only available on the main server)

For a compilation of useful links, try this thread:  http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26726.0

http://planeshift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/planeshift/trunk/docs/compiling.html

This should let you know how to compile your own test environment.

Btw, Planeshift isn't really worth playing offline. Not yet.

This little side note is actually important :) If you want to explore the world or monsters or npcs or something like that you better shouldn't bother yourself with compiling a server. What you will get is only 3 small 'test-maps' that you cannot access on the official game server even. Basically you get an empty server without additional information.

If you want to learn about how the game works or something like that compiling the server will be a very useful experience. You will probably find someone who shows you how to add the other maps (you know from official server), how to add the different races and you can create then your own npcs, weapons and whatever. And have fun of commands you don't know yet ;)

PlaneShift is a massive ONLINE role playing game, it is ment to be played with others and when ONLINE there should never be an offline verison of the game, and unless you tell us more as to why you want one i doubt this will happen.

Testing purposes, internet connection down for a long time, get to know the map betterfor users that do not met the game system requierments (improving gameplay, shortcuts from an area to another)....
I know all of this may look like incouraging cheaters, but s%^t happens and your ISP can't provide for a week or two, meanwhile players like me who spend like 16h a day ingame (I admit, I'm an addict) start chocking the mouse and banging the keyboard to the monitor, so an offline version might help our/my mental illness.

-Oh, forgot about recording a video at better framerate.

as has been said a self built server only has  3 small maps and a couple of easy quests, neither the maps nor the quest are on the official server, so you cant really find your way about nor practice much.

It is however rather straight forward to add the other maps to a self-compiled server. Adding more character models beyond the few that are included is a little more complicated but still entirely possible, same goes for items (but these are more dependant on 'rules'). Just to make it clear the things you would never get hold of are the 'rules' and quests/dialogue that are on the official server. You would need to write them all fresh which is really not worth it (as it is the equivalent of what the settings department have been doing).
