Installation on multiple computers
« on: December 16, 2008, 06:28:33 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've a question about installing PlaneShift on another computer. I currently have PS installed on my desktop, but I want to put it on my laptop as well. How would I go about, in effect, cloning the installation I have on my desktop for my laptop? Will a fresh install on the laptop plus a copy of my psclient.cfg (slightly tweaked as necessary, of course) suffice, or is there something more I need to do? I know my way around a computer, of course, but I just want to make sure the settings transfer over and I thought I'd ask here.

The source computer runs the x86-64/amd64 build of PlaneShift on Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10, and it's an OEM desktop.
The target computer will run the i386 build, also on Intrepid Ibex 8.10, on a Dell Inspiron 1525n laptop.

Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks,
Grey

you will also need to copy your $HOME/.PlaneShift folder

Indeed, I nearly forgot about that. But if I just copy the .cfg files and the $HOME/.PlaneShift dir, everything should work reasonably well?
Easier than I thought, then.

Thanks for your response, Caarrie, I appreciate the help. I'll test it out once I have time, and I'll holler if I've any problems.

Please make sure you have the right installer.

If you intend to copy the 64bit binaries and hope to see them work on 32bit... not very likely. If you just want to keep the same settings, then install the 32bit version of PS on the other laptop and copy .Planeshift dir to keep settings. Also, make sure you rerun pssetup before and adjust settings accordingly.

Oh, not at all, I just planned on copying the .PlaneShift settings/etc. directory from my home directory, as well as the .cfg files. I'll be sure to get the 32-bit x86 installer.

Thanks for your help as well Nykolai.
