Frequent crashes in Ubuntu
« on: December 22, 2008, 04:00:25 pm »
I have installed the PlanetShift client version 4.03 x86 in Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS.
The problem is that the game crashes frequently; the last crash gave the following output to the terminal:

[...]
Map bdroad1 loaded successfully in 1110ms
Map korogan loaded successfully in 57ms
Map magicshop loaded successfully in 1351ms
Map roadtogug loaded successfully in 39ms
DistributeLeafObjects failed: !leaf_replaced
This node contains the following objects:

    1: 'effect_label_178' (43.5047,65.9071,-455.007)-(44.9114,66.3644,-453.011)
    2: 'ylianm' (nan,49.0893,-549.217)-(nan,51.1849,-546.188)
E: thread-posix.c: Assertion 'pthread_setspecific(t->key, userdata) == 0' failed at pulsecore/thread-posix.c:194, function pa_tls_set(). Aborting.
(0) : fatal error C9999: *** exception during compilation ***
Cg compiler terminated due to fatal error

Any advice?  :(

Hi

I think the nan (not a number?) in this line is the problem
    2: 'ylianm' (nan,49.0893,-549.217)-(nan,51.1849,-546.188)

Unfortunately is the bugtracker down at the moment (bugs.hydlaa.com) so I can't look for the entry there.
Does it happen in crowded areas more often?

Out of interest, can you post the machine specifications (cpu etc) - I had this effect some versions ago with an older/slower pc but no more on a faster one.

Yes, it seems to happen in crowded areas more often, but not only.

Intel Pentium 4 DualCore 3.00Ghz
1024MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 6600 256MB

a suse dvd will have the same issue the problem are the binaries and specifically the compiler used for them (yes that isn't the real root cause as this shouldn't happen with any compiler) If you want to fix the issue you need to rebuild by yourself the client. No other solutions, for now, sorry

I think it is bug #1749?

The client does _not_ crash on my new computer (E8400, 4GB RAM, GForce 9600 GT)
I now copied the Planeshift directory to the old computer and started the client without any change (I didn't copy the hidden folder in the home though)
Result: Client crashes on old computer (AMD 3500+, 1GB RAM, GForce 6600 GT rev a2) in few minutes at Krani... errr.. Gugrontid mine with e.g.

    1: 'kran' (166.628,61.9578,nan)-(168.801,64.119,nan)
    2: 'tools#pick01a' (167.772,62.6769,nan)-(168.27,63.3235,nan)
Operating system is SuSE 10.0 on old computer and 11.0 on new one (both 32bit)
Should I add this info to the bugtracker...?

And, most important, has anyone a compiled client the should not have this problem and can publish it? I think that would help greatly.

Btw, My Suse 11.1 Download stopped at 96%

yes that is the bug and i dont think anyone will release a binary that might not have this issue as that takes time and you would then have to release a 64 and 32 bit versions which takes time, the devs would rather fix the bug then take time to release another binary to work around a problem.

The thing is that I have this issue since more than half a year (happy me that I don't use that computer anymore)
I only suggested it because it would be an effective and quick help for players - of course is fixing it the better/only solution

The problem with crowded areas is because if one person with an affected client is in range of someone who triggers the crash it causes the first person to crash. I can't say for sure if the triggering person crashes as well but I have been standing there doing nothing but watching people run around and boom I'm at the desktop.

More of same here.  Worst day ever... crashing about every 20 seconds.

AMD X2 4600
Nvidia 7600GT
2G ram
Slamd64 (running 32 bit client)

Same errors as above:
Fri Jan 16 18:06:55 2009, <src/client/psclientdr.cpp:212 HandleDeadReckon SEVERE>
Fri Jan 16 18:06:55 2009, Got DR message for unknown entity EID:31501.

    9: 'klyrosm' (nan,-0.0249107,7.86729e+33)-(nan,2.03314,7.86729e+33)

log back in, in less than a minute, just standing there:

Fri Jan 16 18:42:19 2009, <src/client/psclientdr.cpp:212 HandleDeadReckon SEVERE>
Fri Jan 16 18:42:19 2009, Got DR message for unknown entity EID:33543.

    1: 'rogue' (34.4857,-16.8824,21.4719)-(37.0123,-15.1803,23.7019)
    2: 'effect_anchor_basic_13' (-1,-1,-1)-(1,1,1)
    3: 'effect_anchor_basic_25' (-1,-1,-1)-(1,1,1)
    4: 'effect_decal_13' (35.0246,-17.481,21.5114)-(36.2365,-16.2691,22.7232)
    5: 'effect_label_6' (nan,-14.2518,7.67765e+33)-(nan,-12.7331,7.67765e+33)

And more of same...

The weirder part is, the objects listed for the node are not apparent:
I was in a corridor in the arena, no players near, only a gladiator (kran).  No Klyro, no Rogue, no double axe in sight.  Arena wasn't that crowded either, only saw maybe 4 players in whole building.

At the moment there is not much use in adding more 'me too' dumps to the bug report. We know this happens in different OSes (linux, windows at least), and is something deep in CS. Sometimes the problem is your own char, and reloging may solve this. Sometimes it is another (or even a target effect, or object, that is not even in view). In those cases, the problem may re-occur after you log in, as the object/char causing the problem is still there.
I am looking into this, trying to find the cause and see if CS people can help solve this. In the mean time, some linux users say they have less problems running the windows version in Wine.

A fix was made in CS that should fix this hopefully. If you build your own client from ps stable trunk with revision 32140 , it should hopefully work.
