I'm not wearing armor and I'm usually only carrying as much as I need to for current quests and do my best to sell off anything unnecessary.  Even with that, and a strength of 90, I am unable to move when I leave the DR.

I could drop all my quest items that I can't get back, but I doubt that would be productive.

I don't mind that a curse exists, but I wish it didn't affect carrying capacity as it removes me from game for 30 minutes, especially when my death was trigged by a bug, repeatedly.

I have since focused heavily on raising my strength (up to 150!) which has made a difference.  But I also don't wear armor, and basically don't carry anything I don't need.

I still think the mechanic could possibly turn players away from the game.  I would be all for lowering your fatigue levels, mana and health, but not necessarily carrying capacity for precisely the reason that it takes people out of the game.

I think the current system is a good one. Death is supposed to be cumbersome. While halving stats halved is aggrivating, it doesn't effect all players that much. There are some that for RP or seeling goods, don't move or just don't need to fight. The carrying capacity limits everyone.

Except when carrying capacity means you can't play the game for 30 minutes.  Literally pulling people of game and telling them to stop playing is not what I would consider a good game feature.  That is the sort of feature that might permanently drive players away.

The ultimate purpose behind playing a game is to have fun.

The curse currently doesn't stop a lot of people from using the Death Relm express to quickly get from one place to another. I have gone to help out friends several times who have been cursed and carrying to much to move. This can be a social aspect of the game, having friends who could come give you a hand and RP with you while you are cursed. No reason just to sit all alone for 30 minutes.

I have used the 30 minutes to RP before, but that depends in other players are near by that you can strike up a RP with.

And while workarounds may exist, that doesn't change the fact that it still may drive players away permanently, especially new players who don't have high strengths.  How is that a good thing?

Here's the fact. It's meant to tech you to be careful. Now, whenever I go to DR, I make sure to not be carrying more then half capacity. As long as you have half or less you'll be fine upon exit.
There is an alternative, more probable theory that 9/11 was in fact caused by Hanson's 1997 smash hit 'MMMBop.'

He's right actually.

I am a brand new player to this game today, I logged in for the first time and spent an hour making a character, loving the rich RP environment of the character creator, I looked around on the forums, came back in game and had some fun going through the initial starter tutorial which was another hour and I actually enjoyed doing it. I was excited at the idea of RP'ing in a game where people actually wanted to RP. I came up with a character history, spent time filling out a description, and I was all ready to start playing the game. I wandered out into the world and explored my surroundings outside of town. I came across a Rouge NPC that auto-attacked me and I won valiantly. I ran all over town and explored the surrounding hillsides! I was having a blast! Then I came across a Pilferer.

I reached the lovely death realm.

I spent two full hours looking for the exit, and I became angry and frustrated after searching for the first ten minutes. Yes, I attempted to follow other players only to discover they didn't know where they were going either. I ran around on every stairway I could find. I finally got so damn sick of the darkness I turned up my screens brightness to double its normal value which had the wonderful effect of hurting my eyes. Then finally I found the damn way out after two full hours of searching around. Guess what? When I found the exit, I wasnt overjoyed or relieved. I was annoyed as crap and was wondering why i just wasted 2 hours on it. So I get out of the dungeon, only to find I have to sit down for an additional 30 minutes because apparently I have a curse on me. Yay! That was fun!

I have no desire to log back in right now, none at all. I play games to have fun, and the last 2.5 hours wasn't fun in the slightest bit. I wish I had found http://www.happypenguin.org/show?PlaneShift&start=10 before I began downloading the game, I could have saved myself half of my Sunday. Right now I feel everything Mnemonic1 said in his post is correct.

If your goal was to infuriate and disorient a new player...well congratulations! You succeeded.

What a waste of time. I'm going to go delete this game now.

Okay, you told your poor little story, it's my turn.

When I first died in the game, I was wandering around like a fool (like you did, you rarely die out of nothing) and was beheaded by a Tefusang or something huge like that.

I remember, I was very angry of myself, and had been surprised to discover the Death Realm. I didn't even suspected its existence and was very surprised.
I started to find out my way out. On one hand I was envoying discovering a whole new world and tried to interact with every npc I was seeing (It's a role-playing game no ? Aren't you supposed to do that kind of stuff ?). I even got a quest from one of them which I didn't had resolved yet.

After several hours (I don't remember how much, but it was more 4 to 6), I finally found the way out (with a little help).

I was also altered by DP after that. You can move if you make sure not to be overloaded. If you always keep a lot of needless stuff, it's the good time to dust off your equipment. (And if you don't want to loose everything, there's a lot of place where you can hide your stuff).

After that good experiment, I'm not anymore afraid of the in-game death.

For example, my character died yesterday evening. I was out of DR in some 10 minutes. I relieved my character from unnecessary equipment which I hid somewhere and the 30 minutes had rotated before I knew.

If you take any difficulty like an insult, then this game is not for you. DR is not the harder part of the game, I swear.

(NB:I'm not talking about the brightness problem because I'm not affected by it, whatever it's not a feature, but a bug)

Difficult shouldn't mean frustrating.  When I was new, I would often die from slipping on hills and suffering fall damage.  The first few times, I deleted my character instead of finding my way out of the death realm because it was just too dark.  And that was when the death realm was much smaller than it is now.

Just a couple of comments...

Some maps being very very dark is a consequence of CrystalSpace lighter2. It will be tweaked and fixed with time. Some video cards display the game MUCH darker than others, I have no idea why that is.

Not everything is intentional, but exploring the Death Realm and socializing (yes, even there), to find someone to guide you out, is definitely recommended.

We believe certain changes we've made will sufficiently address this problem. More changes are planned. We hope you enjoy PlaneShift safely.

To save the time of developers and to de-clutter the forum, maybe a series of stickies could be made in the complaint forum to i. recognize the most visible and most jarring bugs and to ii. point out that the dev team is working to address them.  We see the same threads coming up time and time again and individuals like Xillix seem forced to waste too much of their valuable energies addressing such threads individually.
