PlaneShift History
« on: January 07, 2009, 10:07:51 pm »
We know that PS has gone through many changes over the years. I for one would love to know what changes have been made with each new release. If there are any screen shots of things that are no longer in game, what the dates are of each release, what the game looked like when it first started, etc. Any information that anyone has would be interesting for us to see how PS has developed over the years would be great.

Can someone post a screen shot of the new male dermorian so we can compare the before and after shots? Maybe there are other characters that have been improved on. I really do hope to see some screen shots of old maps compared to today as well and a little history to go with it.

Any answers to Raekh's question: "Anyone got a shot of the hill now the passage to Gugrontid is resided at?"

I came in somewhere in the early 3.09's or 3.14's or somewhere thereabout.

Back then we had ~ 30 quests most of which weren't working :D

Gms were incredibly scarce then . . . there was no settings dept . . .  Karyuu was leading the interaction with players on the forums. . .

I was considered a "problem player" by several officials . . .

A whole lot has changed it seems!

Having only been here a year, I don't have much to add to this thread except to say that when I got here, communication with the devs was pretty scarce. There were a few people who interacted with the players (Xillix, Caarrie to name ones I saw most frequently), but not many. I have to say that things have a way to go still, but the recent changelogs generated for the new releases, the fact that there have been official responses to server outages posted on the forums, and especially the new dev blog... these are the best improvements I could ask for right now. Don't get me wrong... there are many things in-game to ask for... but since this project has no finite schedule for development... letting us know what to look forward to in the short and long term is the best thing they can give us, IMHO.

Please keep this thread going, it is a good thing that everyone can get some perspective on just how much HAS changed, instead of always looking at what we still have yet to see.

There was a time when it was hard to get bugs fixed, let devs know of bugs, and see to it that they were actually tested and fixed. Now we have a testing team and Weltall that has done more bug fixing then many devs that have been on the dev team 4 times as long as he has ;) .

I started with 0.3.016 or maybe it was 017 already... Bronze doors were kinda new back then but already open. Since then, a lot has changed... Quests and skills were constantly added. New glyphs and spells too. New crafts... Too much to keep up with... And I might get the order wrong, but this is what I remember:

First really new expansion I witnessed was the opening of the Winch section. Lots of quests were added to help that. And chainmail armor became the next new thing.

New skins were added for Thunderclacker, Maulbernaut, Marfusang, Poison or Fire Carkarass, Wrathrats, Amigo consumers too I think... Guildhouses became a reality, with the massive scales in there. And Platemail armor was added. Some didn't show yet though. Crafting started to work around here, I think.

Then the Derghir village came into being, and ofcourse the Derghir themselves... And Dermorian females were added. Tlokes were seen for the first time.

Next, I guess, were new gobble types, then Gugrontid came and the caverns in Ojaroad and BDroad.  Xiosia destroyed a guardtower and her tree grew in it's place. The Velnishi came to Yliakum, then the Riverling. Platinum became the new coveted commodity.

A second guildhouse type was then added. And the Gobble huts. And the Black Flame area... Also the Deathrealm changed a bit. Not really in layout, but mostly in art. Staircases started working so people could get on bridges and on guard towers. Cooking and Baking was introduced.

Soon after the rogue camp was added, which also helped with equipping some merchants with tents etc. And the Winch area was expanded with the new suspended platform and the buildings on either side.

Well, that's it "in a nutshell"... All along the way, quests, skills and trainers were constantly expanded upon. Something that added a lot to the gameplay, but doesn't have a visual impact.

Maybe we should reverse the order from now to back.

with or before 0.3.016, Bronze Doors were added. It was empty first but got more and more NPCs over time.
The "adding of BD" also changed "how the maps are connected", you left through the "north gate" to go to Ojaveda and the "east gate" was closed.

somewhen before (or after?) that, platinum was removed. You could mine platinum down in the Laanx Dungeon near Zak.

The gold was made harder to mine and later the gold ingot prices got reduced greatly.. then raised a bit again.

Weapons wearing down was introduced, you first could simply repair them (to full quality), later you needed a repair kit... and even later they started to lose from the "max quality".
When, I don't remember, but the Silverweave short swords which had slash 10 (and SW daggers had 8 IIRC) got reduced to something really low, same with iron short swords/daggers.
Shortly after I paid like 200K for one of those short swords. (a very good price yet 200K was a lot).

Oh, there were also two duplicate items bug and one duplicate money bugs fixed.
A money wipe was done and a items wipe. (only affecting parts of the money and of the items)

OK, a rough guess, near 0.3.018 (no idea if that's correct), the Kada El tavern was modified.
near 0.3.020 or even 0.4.0X already, East Hydlaa got enhanced.

When wa it that Oja flew across the sky again?
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

I know this isn't "old" per se, but most (maybe all) of the merchants got tents/booths just after 4.01/4.02. They used to just mill around and look like they were loitering. This made it much easier to give directions to new players... Go up the stairs just before the North Gate and go to the tent if you are looking for <item>. I remember having to walk players around and stand in front of the merchant just because it was easier than having them ask and get frustrated when I couldn't remember the merchants name.

Also... Before 0.4.00 BD area was sooooooo laggy I had to avoid it at all cost... or end up falling off the cliff if I wasn't very careful on my way to the fortress. Talad released alternate maps for it, but even those didn't help much in my case. Since 0.4.00 I have minor hiccups in certain areas... but I have not experienced anything like I did in BD in 0.3.xx.

When I got here (around 0.3.18/19) there was an introduction system in place. This was a great concept... but had... shall we say... some bugs. This was backed out until it could be revamped in 0.4.00.

I believe the changlog in 0.4.00/01 mentioned that all named NPCs offered at least 1 quest. This was a MAJOR milestone in PS development.

0.4.00/01 introduced fire to the people of Y'liakum. Torches popped up everywhere for a few weeks!!

Ah... almost forgot... there used to be a "glitch" in the collision detection system that allowed characters to "climb" all over Y'liakum and reach impossible places. There were some breathtaking views from some of these places I was taken when I first started playing PS. There was also a guild that posted screenshots and challenged others to figure out how they had managed to get to the places shown...

More to follow as I remember...
