Ezriel The Beautiful And Martin The Ugly
« on: January 14, 2009, 04:30:02 am »
[This the first book by Relayem Lorafe, inspired by Timmothy (though he doesn't know his name) when he was short with Relayem.  The girl who inspired Ezriel is Veralin but, she did nothing wrong, she is the inspiration only because it would annoy Timmothy more to know so.  Feel free to buy a copy from Relayem ingame.  Enjoy the read.]

By: Relayem Lorafe

Martin started off the day as he did every day, he stared into the mirror and prayed that Talad would bless him with a face that did not disgust all who saw it.  He had lived a life of solitude because of his face and this had caused him to be grouchy and angry.  There had been a few who had tried to befriend him but, his suspicion always got the better of him.  The few who were not disgusted by his looks were disgusted by his personality.  Yet there was one redeeming quality that he had, and that was that he sought to end any evil that he came across.  It is this one quality that would cause a change in his life so great that he would stop being the grouch that he was.

Ezriel awoke in a very similar manner.  She stared at herself in the mirror and tried to see what all others saw, the beauty that all men worshipped.  All she saw was simple Ezriel.  She may be more beautiful than all she met but, it was not important, at least, not to her.  She loved people for who they were and so, at the age of 18, was unmarried.  Her beauty of body was equaled only by her beauty within.

On this fateful day, they both visited the great Tavern of Kada, another did as well, Kijurkul, the evil lord!

As Ezriel entered the tavern she noticed the faces among the occupants, none stood out except a diaboli in the corner, and then, only by his insane grin.  She took note to avoid this man and proceeded to sit down and order a simple meal of Kormi steak and red liquor.  But, just as she was about to take the first bite of her succulent meat another man entered the tavern, covered in a cloak and holding a small toy.  Curiousity stayed her hand and she placed the meat down and waved the stranger over.

"Tell me, sir, why do you carry that toy with you?" She asked.

"Sweet lady, you would not understand, this toy is the only one who loves me.  I am an ugly man."

"There is no such thing as ugly men, only bad men.  Tell me, what do you call your toy?"

"I call her Monique, and she is my only friend"

"I will be your friend, dear sir, just show me your face."

Martin, the stranger, usually such a grouch, found that this lady was extraordinarily kind and he did not feel the urge to be mean to her.  Perhaps it is true love, he thought.  And so he moved his hand to remove the hood from his face but, just as he did that he saw the diaboli and recognized the evil within.  The diaboli saw look and walked towards the table, having heard of Martin he could easily guess the identity, only one man fought evil dressed in a cloak with a toy in his
hand.

Martin as well, recognized the diaboli "Kijurkul, I have been looking for you!" he exclaimed.  "And so have I" Martin pretended to make the toy say in a sad and pathetic way.

The two stared at Kijurkul.. Or Martin stared and his toy would have had it been a real person and not just some sad symbol of friendship to a man so ugly as to not be able to make any real friends.  The fight started without warning!  Martin drew his daggers and jumped at Kijurkul who easily batted him to the side!  Martin's head crashed into a chair and he was momentarily dazed, Kijurkul took the opportunity and destroyed Monique the toy in a flash of fire.  He stood over the weak and pathetic Martin and drew his sword, ready to kill him.

"Any last words, Martin?"

But then, without warning Ezriel drew her sword and stabbed Kijurkul through the heart, ending his life and ridding the world of a great evil!

To this day, people still say that none are as virtuous as Lady Ezriel.  The wonderful lady walked over to Martin and smiles as he got up and spoke.

"Kijurkul may have killed my toy but, it has done naught but give my heart the space it needs to fully accept you into my life." Ezriel was taken aback by the beauty of his words and could only utter one single phrase.

"Show me your face."  And so Martin did and Ezriel's life was changed forever.  Where all other saw an ugly disfigured face, Ezriel saw what she had always searched for.  Upon looking at the face before her Ezriel finally understood why people found her so beautiful.  With so much ugliness in the world, and Martin's face, Ezriel truly was beautiful by comparison.  In her life she had only seen other things of beauty but, now that she had seen Martin and could compare herself to that, she truly understood how beautiful she was.  She smiled at Martin and spoke words that he would remember for the rest of his life.

"You have changed my life, Sir, I shall never look upon myself in the same way.  But, you are so unbelievably ugly that I could not, nor could anybody else, ever love you.  I am sorry."

And so Ezriel went on to live her life, finally understanding the true meaning of beauty.  And it wasn't long before she fell in love with one who's beauty matched her own, an author, in fact.

Martin, on the other hand, killed himself, and so stopped being the grouch that he had become.

I thought Relayem was a cook's assistant? So he spends his time writing, eh? But the story is well written apart from that.

He is only a cook's assistant in the demented mind of Ravoll.
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

Ah, demented minds. They sure can be entertaining.

Nice story though. I liked the ending.

I forget which writer, when asked about a title edit by their publisher, replied something along the lines of, "Good god! Change anything in the book that you want, but leave the title ALONE!". Anyway, good title, it pulled me in. The contrast and progression is disturbing, and I liked it even more.

The End Of Martin The Ugly

By: Relayem Lorafe

Our ugly protagonist had now found himself in the Death Realm for the first time, having killed himself after the great Ezriel revealed to him the true depth of his ugliness.  When Martin's eyes first openned he realized he was at home.  The Death Realm held such disgusting creatures that even he would not go noticed.  He may be the ugliest thing in the Death Realm but, the Death Realm was full of ugly things.  And so, he began to make it his home.

During his time down there he did some research in the Library that Londris had put together.  He found out such wonders down there but, none of the new findings helped him any.  He continued to struggle with his looks as, even though he was surrounded by other things of no aesthetic value, travelers would still avoid him and he became lonely.  The change in him that finding a home had caused slowly started to disappear until one day he met an amazing man, who saw past his disfigured face.

"Greetings, there sir... Oh my gods what happened to your face?  Have you see it?  Quick, we should bring you to a healer!  It looks like Laanx finally got tired of being disfigured and decided to give all her scars to you.  By the Gods how do you live with yourself?" Said the amazing man, running away.  Alright, perhaps he didn't see past Martin's atrocious face but, he did change his life.  Martin, after crying for some days, realized what the man had said.  How he had answered Martin's problems.  The answer seemed so simple now: wear a mask!

And so, Martin constructed a mask.  It was very little more than a piece of wood kept on with a string.  He had decided that it must be a solid material and not a cloth for cloth would reveal the outline of the face beneath.  With his new mask he set forth into the land of the Living.  The first who saw him would laugh or avoid him completely as his skill in making the mask was questionable at best.  He found himself tripping over things he would not have before having the mask.  Life was now just a different kind of terrible for our poor protagonist.  Women avoided him, men laughed at him and children toyed with him.

One day, as Martin was walking towards the tavern of Kada he noticed Ezriel standing outside, sad and alone.  A small part of him took pleasure in knowing that she had seemingly fallen on hard times but, the love that was began to resurface and so he walked towards her, ready to make peace and help her.  But fate is a peculiar thing and just as he was about to reach Ezriel he was tripped by a young child!

Anger swelled up within Martin like never before and he struck out at the child, narrowly missing him.  The child scurried off but, Jefecra had seen what had happened and shouted out.

"You dare strike a child?"  Many heard Jefecra's angry bellow and looked over at the masked Martin with anger.  Before long a mob was chasing him, he ran, he tripped and he fell down the large staircase near Kada's.  Forcing himself to his feet he carried on, the mob was up the staircase and another had formed to his left, forcing him into the plaza.

Again, the answer to his problem lay with the one who had inspired the mask.  The Goddess Laanx.  If he could only make it to the well he could hide in the labyrinth of caverns beneath.  He ran with all his might but, just as he entered the Iron Temple he found himself frozen; before him was the masked Goddess herself.

"You come to my temple wearing a mask?  Do you wish to anger me or are you just to stupid to think twice?" Said the Great Lady.

"I - You see, Miss - Sir- Err.. your Godlyness.  I have been cursed with such ugliness that I must wear a mask or be shunned."

"I hardly find that probable, prove it." Laanx said in a cool, steady voice that betrayed very little anger, though she felt much.

"As you wish, your Godlyness"

"Stop calling me that, it's stupid"

"Err, sorry" he replied sheepishly, as he removed the mask to the cold, masked Goddess.

"Oh, by me!  Put that away!  Sheesh, you've lived this long with -that- face.  Ugh, it's hideous.  Your face is to eyes was steaming Ulber droppings are to noses... No, worse!" cried out Laanx "Err... That is to say, young one," she continued in a much calmer way, "That I shall give you a chance for beauty, give me your mask!"

And so Martin gave Laanx his mask.  With a wave of her... his... laanx's hand the mask suddenly became made of a metal that none had seen before.  It was so light that one could not tell if they were holding it, so strong that no blacksmith's hammer nor sword could even leave a mark on it and so brilliant that no man could help but notice it.  Laanx gave this mask to Martin and he put it on, it melded to his face perfectly.

"I have looked into your past, Martin, and seen that you have begun to ignore who you are.  Ever since Ezriel came into your life you have stopped battle evil, this must not continue.  Your hate of evil is what defines you.  This mask shall be yours so long as you strive to defeat evil, in all it's forms.  And every time you do so, it shall increase your beauty --- Or at least lessen how repulsive you are."

And so Martin found who he really was and was overwhelmed with a sense of confidence.  He left the temple and the mob that gathered stood in awe of the great figure before him.  There stood not Martin The Ugly but Martin The Masked.

Wow, this is a first in a long time.... I'm actually hooked >.> I like these stories :) the are interesting, and with the slightest touch of comedy, enough to provide humor, but not so much as to kill the story.

[So, there's a seat that Relayem always sits in when he writes and that's basically the story behind this.  Enjoy!]

Martin the Masked's First Step

by: Relayem Lorafe

Martin set forth with a light heart and a clear goal.  He could go back to ridding the world of evil and be rewarded for it.  No longer would people look upon his disfigured face but upon the brilliant mask Laanx had given him.  And he would earn beauty by doing good and ending what was evil.  He had purpose and the will to live again.  It felt good.

He made his way to Kada's tavern, he had been gone long and it was the best place to catch up on news.  He looked to the corner but noticed somebody was writing a book there and, being a gentleman and not a jerk he decided that he should let the author continue to write.  In fact, he thought, that man probably always writes there, it is probably the only place he writes, from now on I promise never to sit there because it is quite obviously his seat.  And so Martin went to sit in another seat, near the middle of the tavern.

After spending some tria on ale and food and much time listening to the random gossip of the day, Martin came to realize that there were too many evils to chose from.  He would have to decide on a way to... well.. decide which evils to tackle and which to leave alone.  He should definitely concentrate on those evils which others could not defeat on their own, that was an easy enough decision.  The next conclusion he reached was that he should defeat those evils which obstruct noble pursuits above those that do not.  Those that end lives should be tackled quickly!  Those that ruin lives shall be dealt with swiftly!  Those that harm Hydlaa shall be obliterated anon!

He soon found that the thinking had got him really worked up.  He looked around the tavern, hoping to find an evil to quell.  What he noticed though, was the author, standing at the doorway with a look of shock upon his face; in his seat was the most atrocious dwarf in all of Yliakum.  The dwarf was not ugly, like Martin was incase you forgot, but his looks were sinister in nature.  His eyes betrayed cruel thoughts as well as plain dumb ones and the scars on his face showed that he had fought many and was not very good at shaving.

The author walked up to the dwarf as Martin watched from his seat.

"Please, Sir Dwarf, would you be so kind as to move from this seat?  It is the only place where my stories come to me."  Asked the author in a most reasonable and polite tone.

"Why would I let yee sit here?  Me large behind is already upon this seat and I'm not of a mind to move for any stinkin' writer" The dwarf spat at the author once he was finished talking then continued to insult him.  Such a reasonable request from a poor author being met with such a disgraceful reply set Martin off in a fury and he stomped over to the two.

"You there, dwarf, let this poor, innocent, kind author sit down or my words won't be the only thing cutting your head off!" shouted Martin, obviously not paying attention to what he was saying.  The dwarf looked up at him with the most evil and dumb eyes and said, in a deep, dark voice.

"What does that even mean?"

"I don't know, it just kind of came out."

"I hate when that happens, ruins the moment, I find"

"Yeah..." Agreed Martin before they both lapsed into silence.  Moments passed with the author looking from one to the other confused before he finally said.

"Perhaps a simple 'Or you'll be a head shorter than you already are, you despicable dwarf' would be better, masked Sir.  Dwarves tend to be sensitive about their heights."

"Aye, I'll use that!" Exclaimed Martin "Move thy behind or you'll be a head shorter-"

"I heard him say it, already."

"Right, well, move or die!"

"I'll not move for a weakling like him!" snarled the dwarf.

"Then we shall settle this at the arena!"

"Let's!"  And so the two ventured to the arena.  The author sat down in his seat completely taken aback with all that had happened but quite content that both the strange man in the mask and the nasty smelling dwarf were gone.

Meanwhile, Martin and the dwarf were staring at each other, weapons drawn.  Martin held a short sword while the dwarf held a small axe.  There were no words exchanged as neither wanted to waste breath on such things as useless as words.  The dwarf made the first move, he rushed across at Martin swinging his axe towards his chest.  Martin reacted quickly!  He grabbed the shaft of the axe with his hand and, stunned at how easy all this was, basically sheathed his sword in the dwarf's body.

Many thoughts crossed Martin's mind.  Would it always be this easy?  Were all dwarves so terrible at combat? How would Martin himself fight if he were a mere three feet tall?  Is this what it feels like to kill a fat child?  But all these thoughts were overshadowed by one single thought: Am I beautiful, now?

Martin hurried back to the tavern and, as he stepped through the door he took off his mask.  All around him he could hear people reacting to his beauty.

"Oh God!  Put that away!"

"Jeez, it's like a furless Enki!"

"You're as ugly as dwarves are short!"

Such phrases rang out over the sound of people losing their lunches to ... I'm sure you can guess.

Martin put his mask back on and stepped out of the tavern.  He had a long way to go but, he was sure in time he would be beautiful.  Nobody in the tavern fainted from his hideousness and that was a large improvement.  It felt good to have helped the author.

And so Martin went on his way.  Ready to make the world, and his face, a better place.

Tales are still told of a masked man who comes to Kada's every once in a while and kills any man or woman found in the corner seat who is not an author.  And because of that, no sane man ever sits there anymore...Unless he's an author.  So don't sit there.
