1) Why decide without the chance of changing the decision : To ask PLers to migrate when theyve done all the hard work? Surely as Birot/Jenica pointed out, it would be easier to migrate RPers? You ask too much.. 1-2 or more years of grind down the Loo. I dont think so.

Heh. Well, sorry to annoy you with my point of view again as I did in guildchat over a certain other issue, but a lot of roleplayers have worked hard to level their characters, too. However, my breed of roleplayer (the type that backs their character's traits up with stats) would feel pretty slighted if we had to start over, too. You've seen me put off levelling for a good roleplay plenty of times, Draggy; there's a reason I do that. Stats and items, though important for the gameplay experience, are just pixels on the screen; it's the community that really 'makes' PlaneShift. That's why it's taking me over 8 months to get to levels in amounts that the hardcore powerlevellers can acquire in 8 hours. As if balancing roleplay and levelling weren't enough, some of us (well, at least one *cough*) juggle the two between guildchat and out of character /tell conversations with either playing style, too.

I can see where you're coming from, but personally, I feel it's a lot easier for the powerlevellers to regain their stats and trias than it is the roleplayers.

EDIT: And like many others, I'll be checking out the second server - much as typical shorthand, asinine MMO banter (hypocritical, I know XD) has started to increasingly annoy me since I started PS, I still like to play with new features when they're added.  ;D

Now that I understand this better, I think it will work. Already a notable role player has returned.

I don't recall who said it (6 pages is a lot to keep up with here)... but this new server is NOT for people to be stupid on and run around annoying everyone. I sincerely hope that there will still be some rules of conduct enforced. With that in mind, asking questions about how to play (IC or OOC) or adding emotes or "lol" to your speech will not bother people nearly as much on the new server. I see people still needing to be polite as this is not just a server to reenact "Lord of the Flies".

I think the best thing is to reserve judgement until the new server has been implemented for everyone. Any play nice policies that applied on Laanx should still apply on the new server. And it is their sandbox, folks, they are going to decide how this will be used, and they will tell us... not the other way around.

Surely as Birot/Jenica pointed out, it would be easier to migrate RPers?

It took me six months to get my Blue Way to level 30, how is it easier for me to migrate to a new server is beyond my comprehension.
There are plenty of people who roleplay that care about their stats and skills which we use to justify our RP, and as Farren pointed out, it takes us much longer to raise them.

You're going to get a server with a lower ping for the majority of players so you can duel without lagging terribly, new features to test and play with, a bunch of people who cares only about the same you do. Where's the issue?
Sooner or later there'll be a partial or full wipe (no comments on this!) and you'll have to start over again, sounds much better to do that by own will than being forced to it by some dev.

Now this is something I don't really get to understand:

To ask PLers to migrate when theyve done all the hard work? [...] You ask too much.. 1-2 or more years of grind down the Loo. I dont think so.

You, who seem to call yourself PLer, consider training hard work?
Considering this is what a PLer is meant to do most of the time, I can't but wonder how's the game fun for you at all: you should be enjoying it!
Either way perhaps somebody should start thinking on paying PLers for the job... Oo

Aside of that, nobody is asking levelers to quit Laanx, the decision is up to every individual and anyway, I'm pretty sure most players will have accounts in both servers.
Regarding newbies though, the inclusion of a new -more advanced- server is concerning. I've started playing the game as a pure PLer (which I still am) and I very doubt I would have started playing in a roleplay server given I could have chosen considering my very first thoughts about the whole thing. That applies to me and to more than half of the people that are nowadays very good roleplayers.
What is going to happen with all those new players who are potential kickass RPers but join the new server, thus never find out how exciting doing other than grinding can get to be? Guess we'll miss them.

It'd be nice to at least keep the tutorial for the new server as well, and more importantly the last part of it. May cast some light upon those who've been misguided. ;)

Sounds like a job for the Laanx RPers to put on some RP events on the new server to entice the new players...  ;D

Seriously though... There will be players on both servers... most will start to favor one or the other... some will only be on one or the other... but the real crux of the situation... is that your RPs will have to be inviting/inclusive or people will just leave Laanx for the other server. You won't be able to just nitpick people into either falling in line or leaving PS completely.

I am not trying to start a fight... I truly believe that if people can get their intro to PS on a server where they don't have to be concerned about people jumping on them for asking questions (OOC.. asking what to "click" without using brackets)... then they will feel more welcome in the community. I also believe that a lot more people will actually TRY to RP if they don't feel so much pressure to "do it right". If you put on events and such that entice people on the new server... they will start wondering if those things happen on Laanx all the time and check it out. I do NOT believe that there will be NO RP on the new server... just much more casualRP with less expectation/pressure of "doing it right".

[EDIT] It's the 15th... when can I register an account and start playing on the new server? The ping times for me are 1/5th of what they are on Laanx... :)

Maybe one day crossover between servers will be possible, putting the planes into Planeshift!

I'm still a little confused though, we will be able to register from email addresses already used for laanx registrations correct?

I know that no one is being forced to go anywhere. I just wanted to say the roleplayers take so long to train because they choose to take long to train. They choose to roleplay instead of train. Just like I choose to spend most of my time on PlaneShift training instead of roleplaying. I know that PlaneShift was created to roleplay, but if that is all true, why can you train? I feel that the players and the roleplayers need eachother. I don't think that the players are better than the roleplayers, or that the roleplayers are better than the players. I know we have all put alot of time and effort into making out characters the way we want them to be. In real life, I am very shy and talking to strangers is not something I do normally. So, yes, roleplaying is very tough for me. And I know I am not very good at it. I do roleplay with the friends I have made though. And I do try to roleplay at events also. I just don't spend alot of time at the tavern. I have been playing PlaneShift for nine and a half months and this is what I have accomplished in that time: 100 sword, 150 melee, 80 medium armor, 100 heavy armor, 97 mace and hammer, 63 metallurgy, 39 mining, 82 crystal way and 150 brown way. And I am very proud of my character and how I have built her. I have not kept track of how much tria and pp and time it has cost me. But I know it is a ton! I would not want to have to do it all again, just like the rest of us, players and roleplayers alike. I really do like the idea of this second server, and I will register for an account there. Maybe one day on server number two, I will have a character as strong as Jenica is. I am excited and look forward to trying it out and seeing how it is different. A big YAY!!! and thank you! to the development team!

There is really no need for anymore argumentation on which server will be rp and which will be non-rp, we've made up our minds and it won't change.

No more justifications on the roleplayer side are needed.

No more appeals to change from the non-roleplayer side are needed.

You will respect roleplay conventions on Laanx.

You will not enforce roleplay conventions on Ezps.

I agree many will have characters on both, and this is great. Rpers will surely try to woo some people from the other server, and this is fine so long as they don't get preachy or disrupt people's leveling (hahahaha). Leveling non-rp people will remain on Laanx, but they will be not be permitted to disrupt roleplayers or events with ooc text or actions.

I agree with many of the last posters, we will wait and see how this works out in reality and we will adjust accordingly.

Off topic, I know, but you don't have to go to the tavern to spark some roleplay. >>;

I think this new server game talk is destroying a game that i have come to love to play, i have a few comments or suggestions.

1] Instead of useing new server for a whole new PS world, would it not be more benificial to use it as a backup for when the server from Singapore goes down, like now.

2] There are only 180 at the most players here playing according to Monthly stats, why divide that when this world is so big, what at a 50/50 split thats 90 players on a server at the max.

3] Like isaid above the world is so big that most RPers and PLers are not even in the same place at any given time, Only compliants a RPer really has i when a newb to PS is asking some information and its disturbing there role-play, Rpers should lighten up on the newbs and be a little more helpful considering everyone was new at some point, I know most old PLers arent out interupting an Rpers role-play event, hell PLers normally are off in the wilderness hunting and RPers are in the city.

4] When i first started playing PS a few years back, i found that going to Hydlaa was a hassel most everyone there are in there own RP world, and by god dont interupt them or they will bite your head off, Hell i still hate going there due to some of the snooby attitude.

5] Im just trying to say we should use this new server as an oppurtunity to back up lanxx not draw people off it

6] Simple fix to PLer vs RPer is to lighten up a little, and be a little more understanding of someone new just asking questions.

I hope Talad and the Devs realize by know from this forum, how bad of an idea this split is...... :'(

I have one finale statement and this is suppose to not sound sarcastic but i imagine some will take it that way, I find that most RPers call sitting or standing around talking to 2 or 3 other people a event but by definition that is only a conversation, an event is a organized activity with multiple players and i rarely see events disturbed by non-RPers in fact  i truly love to attend events, where as sitting or standing and talking for a long period of time is not interesting to me.

I hate to disagree Birot... but while your background is probably correct... and your assertions are valid... I have been here a year and the attitude (at least here on the forums) has gotten MORE strict against the non-RP crowd, not LESS. There have been countless calls for people to lighten up, and people counter with arguments about how PS is a RP game... etc... Think of this like an experiment... the RPers are finally getting what they have asked for... a server where RP can be ENFORCED... let's all sit back and see how it all works out in the long run. Nobody is getting wiped... so just enjoy the new development and we can finally see if anyone can smelt ore when they can't buy ingots... :)

this would be very hard as few people have access to both servers and if the server is down we need to know why and updating both servers database with the same info would not be so easy. Please stop making suggestions for the use of this server the devs have already decided, I would not be supprised if this thread gets locked because of the attitudes of the players toward this. Or the devs could just decide not to open the server and leave it as is.

The views expressed here are still largely positive and only a couple people have really opposed this move.

I don't see a reason to lock it at the moment, it isn't as if some people not liking this (OR ANY) idea we have come up with is new at all.

Characterizing this as the death of anything, a betrayal, a bad idea, or any other doom and gloom scenario is simply premature.

I propose to "lock" the names on both servers cross-wise.
- avoid abuse of character names by other players ("Hey, you insulted me?" - "No, that was my bad twin.")
- avoid mixing up of worlds and characters ("Hey, what world are we talking off?")
If someone wants the same name on both servers, a GM can check if the person is the same for both accounts and allow the name on demand.

This would be almost impossible as the data for each character is seperate, sorry i dont see the devs ever taking the time to banname each and every char made on either server and cross check it, the purpose of this server was not to cause the devs or gms more work then they already have.
I understand. I thought you could use one table in the database for both servers somehow. I do not know your code good enough ;) However, I think it should be possible to make a name request to both data bases at character creation? So by default, if a character is created, the name is inserted in the table of the corresponding server data base, but will not be available on the other server. If people insist on having a character with the same name on both servers, they still could ask for that (I know this is still work for the devs/GMs).
However after having talked to different persons already, this is what I think will happen: Many players will create two accounts, one for each server to avoid the above mentioned abuse. In my opinion, this will create an overhead in the data bases. Also, I fear that forums will be spammed with messages like "I hereby announce that the character X on server Y has nothing to do with my character Y on server X which is related to my forum account Z". I hope there is a way to prevent such confusion in advance?
