What Urks Me To Death!
« on: February 17, 2009, 08:49:09 pm »
It seems that most people on these boards have the attention span of a BRICK...I can't understand why 99.8 of the topics start with a good point, and end with a completely random thing.  For example

You see a great looking topic with tons of replies and views. "Cool I think I'll read that one!"
You open it and read page one, its good.  Page two, Not so much. Page 3-70 GARBAGE.
Maybe we should stay on topic!  If you want to get off topic, making a new post would be appreciated...
Just a thought

It's a forum, therefore people discuss and often go astray. It's not always a bad thing, you know, but sometimes you're right. At the same time it's also a matter of self-education and understanding the forum culture, if I may call it that way.

Different people, different backgrounds, different expectations.

So, In last nights airing of <insert prime time drama show here>...  :)

Seriously, I agree with you Madoring. It would be nice if people who visit forums did not appear to have a serious case of ADD...

I also agree, but sometimes going off topic, [I said sometimes] can bring up interesting ideas that were not in the original post.

Yeah i agree with Mathy, but for real its easy to go make your own post instead of ruining someone elses.  you could just as easily say "Here is what i think" and link to your thread...Right?

I think neko would delete or lock it if he thought it was a duplicate though I am not sure Madoring.

Oh i see what you mean.  But still...it does annoy me that posts go way off topic was all I was getting at, and I wondered if anyone else felt that way is all. :innocent:

Sure it does Madoring. I wish that people would finish writing their stories on the forum also. It is like not being able to finish a good book [in some cases anyway] but what can we do about it though?

Yeah, it happens. Most of the time it is just innocent digression from the topic. Most of the time...

http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=34800.0

but it doesnt matter if it is my post or any post.  All i'm trying to say is this board gets way to off topic is all.

There is a difference between going off topic, and having threads have a discussion that evolves and continues.  There have been many a discussion on this topic before.  If you don't allow a thread to evolve and continue then all you get is hundreds of threads with one or two replies with "yep, i agree with that." or "nope I don't agree with that."  but they can't add any more to that because if it isn't the exact same as the original post, it would be "offtopic".

In the thread you linked, I see nothing wrong.

If a thread is made discussing how people like apples, and someone comes along and says how much they also like oranges and the thread continues on to cover more fruits, that is fine.  If a thread is made discussing how people like vegetables, and then someone comes and posts something about how like reading books by 19th century Russian authors, then that is not fine, and the topics will be split.

These forums are actually very, very tame as compared to the typical game forum.  We're actually quite strict on forum rules here.  heck, if we were like a regular games forums, I'd have made fun of you for never posting any of your topics in the right forum section and never actually responded to anything you wanted to discuss.
