will you stop developping after you hit the final version?
« on: April 28, 2003, 01:02:40 pm »
it\'s a \"problem\" that was bugging me for the past few days.

Planeshift has real potential, and it takes and uses all the advantages that it has as a free and open-sourced game.

what\'s the problem with most games - they get old. some becuase of their sound and graphic and others just get played over and don\'t have a spot that the player hasen\'t seen before.

that\'s where Planeshift is different - it\'s openness creates a better interaction with the end-user/player and the developers, and the fact that there\'s a source available makes it very customisable.

PS really has potential to become the game of the century (not kidding!!!) - it has possibility to evolve through time and its players help create and improve the world, it has even possibility to improve its graphics and sound - thank you, oh, mighty sourcecode and GPL!!!

so i was wondering, since this gam has REAL potential, which IMO won\'t ever dissappear, are you the devs going to abandon the game when it hits final (1.x.x)? you know, when you get tired of developping it, you can always recruit new devs and artists (which you already do now!!), so i hope that the tradition of PS will keep up and that there will always be enough devs and players to keep Planeshift and its World not only alive, but at its peak!!!

i hope you don\'t - and i have a feeling that PS and i will have a lot of great years of playing together :]

I certainly hope not and if they do I hope the Dev team decides to tackle another MMORPG after learning much experience from this game +if people give up making this game PS large community could most likely find replacements to continue production

As far as what I know, there will never be a final version (unless all the devs suddenly die from some unknown disease, or the world gets shot down by a huge meteor). :P

I think that as long as there a people willing to work on it there will never be a \'final version\' since it will always evolve and grow.

that\'s a relief, if one of the devs would post something like that it would be really nice to hear :]

it would really be a shame and waste to end this great game :]

I agree.  Like any other Open Source project with any success, it should live on indefinitely.

There\'s no reason why it wouldn\'t continue for at least a long time, unless of course, people stop working on it. But, as far as I can tell, as PS gets more complete, more people will play it, so more people will no about it, so more people will want to work on it, so the game will get more complete and better, so more people will play, so... blah blah blah... I mean etc.  It\'ll be all exponential-like.
You are here,
You will always be here,
You will never be there.
Although you may strive to get there,
upon reaching there you will realize you are really here.
And there is everywhere else.

yea, i know that Open-source idea ...i was just asking to hear the devs\' view of it :D ...it\'d be shame not to continue it ...i figured that PS will probably be the game that i\'ll play for the loooooongest time (as in until it exists!)

Infinate planeshift...... mmmm....  :D  I\'d love to see it continue like that. Look at everquest, it hasnt died yet, so there\'s always more that planeshift can add on. 10 years from now, I wonder what planeshift will be like.... :D

actually i don\'t see a point in that ...maybe there\'ll be an updater, so you won\'t have to download anew everything for the next sub-version, but i think that PS will probably have that much things that\'ll get changed even in the future, so there\'ll actually be no final (as in last) version. but the final version here refered to is 1.0.0 ...i don\'t believe that PS will halt at 1.x.x ...i think that the versions will go on at least beyond 3.x.x (hopefully until at least xxx.x.x!!!)
