Training

I can't figure out the training. I have spent at least 8 progress points on the mining skill with the button buy skill. I still have lv 0, and the bar doesn't move at all. Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong? Please help.
Note: I have read the player guide and it didn't help me with this, so don't tell me to read it.

step one: get progression points and money by killing rats
step two: find an npc who trains mining and train it until the yellow bar is green
step three: mine until you level up, then repeat step two


As you mine successfully, you should get a message saying that you gained practice points.  You will only get practice points if you trained the skill 100% for that level.  Also, you get practice points for finding ore successfully, but not for mining unsuccessfully.

I know it's somthing to find in game, but I searched around for awhile and I've still yet to find a place to mine. I mine where it should be obvious there should be a mine (I think), but I come up with nothing. Is there a particular look I need to look for?

It's not that simple.  Players show other players where to find it, so look for someone with a pickaxe, and stalk them.  (Or you could just ask for help.  Most players are helpful.)
