Client doesn't work on Open Suse
« on: March 29, 2009, 12:15:26 pm »
Hi,

I've just installed PS by Yast on OpenSuse 11.1. I updated it and try to run the client. A window opens with some drawing (load screen?) but closes without any notice in a second. And that's all.
Any one knows what should I do?

thx for help.

Third party packages are generally unsupported around here. Your best bet is to uninstall it with yast then download the appropriate version from here and install that manually. I'm not sure who keeps packaging the game in rpms or debs, for the various distro's but it seems pretty apparent that they do not actually use them themselves. I have never heard of someone using them successfully. If you want to insist on using the third party packages then contact the package maintainer for support.

Same experience here. The default PlaneShift install from the OpenSuse repos did not work for me, but the official ones from the game website did.

Try the official packages.

I installed it via Yast and it is working, but it may have pulled it from another repository like Packman:

Still downloading from the main site is probably the way to go.

OpenSUSE 11.1 now installs the PAE kernel by default. Whether or not this is effecting PS I don't know, but it has certainly required workarounds for other programs. I tried the Yast version earlier today on a spare computer (before reading this post I didn't even know PS was in the repos), and it failed to load properly. However, the official download from the site should. The only problem for me was that the installer closed with the error "segmentation fault." I solved this by opening the terminal and after using 'cd' to get to the directory of the file, typing './filename.bin --mode text'. This causes it to install in a text based format. When it asks you to set permissions, be sure to hit yes and set it to your username, otherwise it will block you out of the directory you installed it to. Hope this helps.

I use 64-bit, which doesn't use a PAE kernel.

The installer seg faulting and only running in --mode text isn't an OpenSuse only problem I use the pae kernel and it installs ok.

One thing, I really would advise not to use the rpm's in the repos they generally are not supported and history shows they tend to be abandoned soon after creation.
