Language school
« on: April 24, 2009, 10:45:39 pm »
I want to create a language school, in the University of Amdeneir, to teach at least the basics of each races' language.  This is still a  :beta: idea so I will need some help.  It will start as soon as Amdeneir comes out, and I don't know when that is, so I want to be ready.  I am still looking for someone who knows at least some basics of one of these languages:

Nolthrir
Dermorian
Stonebreaker
Enkidukai
Klyros
Ynnwn

Anyone who might somehow know some from any unlisted language (except Common) would be great!

Also, if you are interested in learning a language, sign up for class here.

I will need help working out some of the details, so teachers, send me a tell in-game or post on this thread and we can see what we can do.
If someone can help in any other way, please post about it!

Have you looked at the language pages in the PlaneShift Wiki?

Yes.  Thats where I learned my Klyran.  I'm thinking this would be a great rp thing, to teach them from real people, in-game.

Sounds like a neat idea, however the languages somewhat baffle me.

I'd try and help, but I'm not sure what I could offer outside of a student role.

I primarily would be interested in Dermorian, but if the language expertise is limited to another I could probably create a related student in need.

The languages are entirely player made and conceived. If the languages baffle you, try working with one of them so you can understand them, or if you think it would be too different a turn from what's there, try starting a language from scratch with the non-existent Xacha, Ylian, Hammerwielder, Lemur, Kran, and Diaboli languages.

I believe the Stonebreakers and Hammerwielders share the language currently called Stonebreaker,
since it's an invented language made to communicate, trade and exchange ideas with other races.
Would like Settings to confirm that, though :D
It's not related to the secret dwarven language, which is never spoken in front of outsiders.
We, all of us, serve a higher purpose. Finding it out, however... :)

The Knowledge Seekers would surely be honoured to have a language professor... ;)

Their last member of major linguistic importance was Lady Arka Garam, who developed the Stonebreaker language "Pel Perrakithor" and published lessons (in the old and almost lost forums).

Hello people.

I've seen the language page in PSWiki, which is very impressive and I'm really enthusiast about it (even if that means work for the player).
Anyway, I'm kind of skeptical about founding a language school ingame.

I mean, my main character is a Klyros. I don't see him going to language school and learn Klyros (I assume he should know it, right ?)

The second purpose of the school would be teaching another language to the character, which wouldn't be devoid of interest and can lead to some new interactions between players (and surprise a character of another race by talking to him in his native tongue), assuming both knows the tongue.

That's where the interest in using the languages may collapse, cause, for this to work, you would expect a lot of players to learn their main character's tongue and perhaps one or two more.

So, I'm afraid the usage of differents tongue would be only between some deep RPers.

But, hey, you can always make a shoot at it if you trust in this. I'm sure you'd have several students, just don't have too high expectations about the result.

PS (I wonder how you would teach the Klyros tongue with a qwerty/qwertz/azerty/dvorak (pick yours) keyboard.

No, Klyran is a language that comes from pre portal. Only scholars and a few small klyran groups know and use it. In the hydlaa area, it is more likely to assume that your character only speaks common, so the purpose of the school is to learn your ancient languages. The same goes for other race languages.

Ok, sorry then. I didn't saw that explanation on th PSwiki.

So, maybe the interest would be greater than what I wrote in first place.

Of course - "Enkien".

Well, a "Grrensholo!" and a "Dovoy!" can be heard now and then. That's already some level of acceptance.
