I can't see any gameplay

I installed the game, got through logging in and registration just fine, but when I started the tutorial I couldn't see absolutely anything in the background.  I could click on things, but the background was just a big static picture and my pointer left trails on it, including any windows I opened,

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, and have an Acer Aspire One, which has an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 card.  Could my graphics card be the problem?

(I really hope it isn't.  I'm so tired of games not supporting it, this is like the 4th one I've tried.)

driver shipped with ubuntu 9.04 for intel graphics are a trainwreck literally. sorry but the intel drivers are entirely unusable it's already much you can actually use it at all in 2d. If you want to fix the problem you have such solutions
A) hope someone fixes it and check proposed repositories to get them earlier
B) upgrade to ubuntu 9.10
C) downgrade to ubuntu 8.10
D) rebuild the required drivers with head from the various repositories

Ugh.  I downgraded to the 2.4 driver with no luck.  I'm getting myself a different graphics card if possible.  Nobody likes Intel graphics cards. -_-
