Yes I've searched, both manually and automatically, I've read the stickies, and this is where they led me. so close...

I've been trying to unbug my computer so that I can actually play planeshift after too long away from the game, but I can't open up psclient.cfg

I tied in both application support and in the planeshift folder itself, but both of them apparently open up another game, called wesnoth that appears to think that the totally unrelated other game is part of itself. Is there a fix, or will I have to make the not entirely difficult) choice to uninstall wesnoth to make this work?

Ok.. scratch that. Deleting all the Wesnoth files hasn't worked. My computer still thinks that this is a wesnoth campaign file. Please help, I was so happy to discover that my username was saved, let alone the character I spent so long perfecting.

I'm not sure what you mean, planeshift.cfg is a simple text file. You should be able to open it in any text editor.
But to start the game, you'll have to find the executable. (how are .exe's called on Mac?)

Well Rowanas, there are two different questions you could be interested in:

1. How do I play the game on my mac?
Answer: To do this, you should try to open "psclient.app" from your planeshift folder

2. How do I open and edit the "planeshift.cfg" file from my application support folder?
Answer:
Ctrl-click the file (or right-click, or select and press cmd-i) and choose "Get Info".
In the Get Info Window, click on the "Open with:" triangle and choose "TextEdit" from the pop-up menu.

[Tip, if Text-Edit does not appear as a choice in the pop-up menu,
select "Other..." instead and then choose "TextEdit" from the following dialog.]

Hope that helps, player_of_games

I think they are .appon Macs. Anyway, I've got everything I need to play, I just can't get it to work. I got into the .cfg eventually, but inputting the thing that worked for everyone else hasn't worked for me. :(

Launch Manager is responsible for opening files based on associations.

Launch Manager settings are held in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. Some associations are cached in /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices*.csstore (the exact name varies with OS version). To remove the offending association:
  • rename/move the cache(s) (you could delete, but a rename/move is safer)
  • restart
  • open the LaunchServices preferences in the Property List Editor
  • search for and remove the association for the binary files.

well, I assume you did some modifications to your .cfg file,
but what do you actually do when you try to play planeshift?

In other words, what does not work?

You seem to indicate that the .cfg file is opening incorrectly. Try dropping that on top of TextEdit, in /Applications.
What happens if you try to launch PSSetup in the /Planeshift folder?
If the executables are not launching, it sounds like they are damaged or mis-installed.
Try running the Planeshift installer again. What version of the OS are you?
If you are on an OS 10.2 or 10.3 machine, the problem probably isn't going to be fixed by adjusting anything in Planeshift.

When I try to start up planeshift, I double click on PSclient, and away it goes. I og in, choose character, it loads up, and then it just dies. it tells me that it has unexpectedly stopped working (unexpected? not so much...) Apparently this has been fixed for others by adding two lines of code, or fixing bits, but it hasn't worked for me. I'm using MAC OS X.5.5, with the standard ATI 1600 graphic thingy in. I guess I should change the title of this topic, since that's not the problem any more. I'll try a reinstall and get back to you guys.

In /Applications/Utilities there is a program called Console. Whatever error Planeshift is generating is getting put into one of the system logs. If you have Console open when you launch Planeshift, it should show the error coming from Planeshift when it is launched and you can paste it up here.

Sorry, I saw the bit about clicking it and away it goes and thought that meant the client wouldn't open. You might still get something useful from the system logs however. Best bet is a reinstall, using the default administrator account on that computer.

Please try downloading and running http://www.planeshift.caarrie.org/Fix%20PS.zip and applying the fix for the ATi x1600 and Texture Compression

One thing you should definitely do, besides getting planeshift to run,
is update to Mac OS 10.5.7 via running "Software Update..." from the apple menu!!!

Running an unpatched version of the OS is almost never a good idea.

10.4.11 is the last revision patch on 10.4. You don't get 10.5 automatically without buying it or a new computer, so I doubt he can do this.

Verden, he earlier said he had X.5.5, so he should be able to update to .5.7.,
but the counterfactual conditional that underlies your statement is still true  ;)

Anyway, sorry for going horribly  :offtopic:

Looks like that was edited out at some point. Yes, if one is already on 10.5, then the update to 10.5.7 should be applied before doing anything else.
