The Great Contribution Project
« on: June 16, 2009, 07:39:55 am »
You are sick of hammering a book? You never find the ingredients for your famous recipe because they all look the same in your inventory? Welcome to "The Great Contribution Project".

XilliX suggested I try to post and get a group of people to work together on creating some entry level art to submit to the team while building skills that might lead to applying. This project tries to lower the barrier for people to get into PS development and actually contribute something. You don't have to send in an application form, you don't have to fill out the paperwork (not yet) and you don't have to be a master of the known universe - you can just contribute.

To make it as easy as possible for everyone to get going, the goal is to create all those inventory items which are still missing - 2D inventory icons as well as the 3D objects. If you already have advanced sketching/drawing/modeling skills, you can of course provide any other content.

No project without rules:

  • The content has to be created by you (You have to own the copyright).
  • If your work gets approved by the PS team and you still want to contribute it, you have to sign the Atomic Blue license.

How it works:

In this thread (Phase 1) we will try and identify all missing items which do not have a 2D or 3D representation. So everybody please check your inventory and also drop your items on the floor, to see if they have a proper 3D object. If you identified a missing icon/object and would like to have it added to the game, just post it here along with a (2D) and/or (3D) tag like this:

(2D) Item A  =  2D art required
(3D) Item B  =  3D art required
(2D/3D) Item C  =  2D + 3D art required

I will create a list at the end of this thread which I will update with your suggestions. As soon as we have identified some items and there is interest in helping to create these, we will start Phase II in which I present all the technical details to get started. From there on everybody can post sketches / drawings / icons/ models / ... to get a representation for (hopefully) every item on the list. When an item is done, it needs of course approval from the PS team to get into PlaneShift. After approval, you have to sign the Atomic Blue License and et voilà - you are an official contributer.

The List to get started:

  • (2D/3D) Alpha/Beta/Delta/Brittle/Dull (heated/super heated/red hot) Blades
  • (2D/3D) (small) wicker shield core
  • (2D/3D) (small/round) wooden shieldcore
  • (2D/3D) leather knife handle
  • (2D/3D) Hops
  • (2D/3D) Macca

Just a reminder; you must be 18 years of age to sign the Atomic Blue license. That being said, I've got this thread bookmarked and look forward to seeing where it takes us!

Thanks for your input  Nairan. I really appreciate it.

Hope we can find more people to complete this list and some people who are willing to help create sketches / textures / icons /models. At the weekend I will create a video which shows how easy it is to create simple 3D models. Nobody needs modelling experience to join this project. Everybody who wants to get into computer graphics is welcome.

I already prepared several of those items you listed, while I was still an art prospect. I am just not sure if I forgot something to get them approved and uploaded...

Therefore I am a bit surprised that you believe so many items "missing", so you obviously don't know which are already done and just wait to get released.

I don't wish to pull the handbrake -- people with spare time shall use 3D and painting tools and create models and textures ... but there are a few responsible people, and working without any contact to them may never bring your work into the game.

Remember what happened to most of the results from the thread What the Team needs from You. They are still "available", but [partially / mostly / in general] not yet reviewed (as far as I know, and I lost a lot of confidence since I moved to the testers).

To sum up: Don't cry that you wasted your time if you don't coordinate your work with the development team. You may need to become prospect for that, possibly.

That's right, I don't know what is already on the way of beeing commited, but that's the reason we are creating this list of missing items. When I talked to XilliX I said exactly what you are telling me now, that we need a list of missing items we can start with. I was told: "We need EVERYTHING, just look around what is missing!". I don't want to bother the modelling team with creating lists as their time is quite limited. So we go the other way round. We create a list and let them remove all items which are already in the process of beeing commited.

Yeah I know that we have to coordinate the efforts with the arts team. That's what I will be doing as soon we have the list of missing items. I think there are people out there which want to contribute but are afraid of applying or just think they are not good enough. That's why I try to lower the barrier. People get told what they can do (they can pick items from the list) and actually try it. If their work gets approved they can apply for the team. The BIG difference is they then already know that they are good enough (at least for simple projects) and they do not need to be affraid of being rejected. They can just continue working on small projects and build up their skills. I do not want to recruit advanced modellers here (as they can apply directly) but give people a chance to try some computer graphics and see if they like it.

We will of course coordinate the work with them. But thanks for your concerns it's always good to know some people care.

Talking with Xillix is definitely a useful step.

"We need everything" may be right. "We don't need organisation" is surely not. ;)

BTW: I may have used wrong vocabulary because I am not a native english speaker... I did not lose confidence in the development team, just confidence in my knowledge about their level of business, stress, activities.

Let's concentrate on telling people why they can succeed and not why they can fail.  :beta:

You could try with the lid inside the jar. The old way.

Thumb rule: Not too many mesh details for small objects. Normal maps will become available, and will display the foot bump with a lot less triangles in the model.

Here a list of small items I already uploaded while I was an art prospect, but did not (yet?!) get approved or used:

  • (2D/3D) Hops
  • (2D/3D) black walnut
  • (3D) burnt / grilled meat

The icons and textures for burnt/grilled/rotten meat already exist, they are art/things/food.zip : meat01f / meat01g / meat01h; I also tried to use the same 3D model with only texture changes for sliced/diced meat (meat01d / meat01e), but they may not be very impressive this way. All they need to appear in game is an assignment in the database tables.

Some 3D models, icons and textures for different fruits and plant parts (stems, barks etc.) got already uploaded, but there was no final decision yet about the quality. It is still possible that they might get rejected, so feel free to offer your examples.

Surely missing:

(3D) Small key -- for the guild house

Icons are available. Their missing assignment is already listed in the bugtracker.

What about this key? It has no texture yet, I'm gonna create one later. It consists of 17 vertices, is that low enough?
