Help with "waiting on server data" please
« on: July 08, 2009, 02:12:21 am »
Hey Everyone,

This is my first post, and I would very much like your help.

I've been wanting to play this game for like 6 months now but I can't seem to get it going. I downloaded the installer for windows(XP) and updated the game without a problem. When I run the client it opens with the login screen. I created my account and can login(fragnetics) without a problem. After the login screen I'm guessing I should be able to create a character to play but it seems as though I'm not getting a response from the server. I can see the "New Character" button but I'm not able to select it. Also there is a message at the top of the screen that says "Waiting on server data".

Like I said I'm running XP I have AVG 8.5 installed with the latest update and I have added the client to the Windows firewall exceptions. Also I added the 7777 port to the firewall exceptions, I read somewhere in the forums that this might help.

Can someone please advise me on how to fix this problem. I tried searching the forums but didn't find anything that helped. If there is already a thread for this I apologize for adding this one I'm just really tired of looking for an answer and not finding any.  :'(

Thanks

7777  tcp  orrrrr   7777 udp?  both ways or just outgoing?  you'll need 7777 udp both ways allowed.

have you tried turning windows firewall off and trying to connect and see if it does?  that would pinpoint uit down to that then.   how are you connecting to the net?  through a college/uni type controlled connection, or a straight isp you pay a fee for?  if its owned by someone else it could be them blocking the ports and there'd be little you could do.

does it look like the screen has loaded properly?  perhaps its just an issue with your video card not rendering he screen properly?  have you gone to your vid card manufacturer's website and seen if there is a new driver version?

Hey Neko,

Thanks for the reply.

I added both TCP and UDP to the exceptions list but have since removed TCP because I tried turning of the firewall and it made no difference. I'm not sure how to sepcify both incoming and outgoing but I think it is allowed both ways.

As for the graphics issue, I have been trying the game on 2 seperate PC's. For my desktop PC I can't remember the graphics card right now(I'm at work I'll try to add it later tonight). I'm also using my Inspiron 1525 Laptop. Both the computers' drivers are up to date for all components. I download the updates regularly. But assuming that this is a problem how can I find out exactly what is causing the problem?

I have tried connecting from the office, but only got to the same screen with the "waiting on server data". Unfortuanatly this isn't very helpful because the port is blocked, I am the network administrator's support/assistant so I do have access to the firewall settings to check. I am not however allowed to change blocked ports and stuff like that. From home I am using iBurst(if that is helpful) a broadband dial-up connection. Both the computers use the same connection, but not at the same time. I was wondering if there might be an issue with shaped/unshaped traffic. Is there a chance that the ISP is blocking port 7777?

I should also probably state that I have tried it using Ubuntu aswell a while back(before format) and got the same problem.

Hello

I think network ports work fine so far (since you can login).
Can you link to a screenshot of what you see?

Do you have anything in the errorlog.txt in the installation folder of planeshift? That could be a thing to post, too (maybe check before that the time&date fits to the last attempt to run the game).

Hello Sen,

Ok, so I looked at the errorlog.txt file and this is what it says:

<..\..\src\client\sound\pssoundmngr.cpp219 psSoundManager::Setup SEVERE>
Couldn't find iSoundRender!
Couldn't create Resource 'sound.standardButtonClick'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.toolbar'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.cancel'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.ok'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.scrolldown'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.scrollup'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.shortcut'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.quit'

I deleted the file and ran the game once to create the file as above. I quit before logging in so this is even before the waiting on server data message appears. Deleting the file again and running again and loging in creates the same errors only with a different time stamp.

Hello

This Couldn't create ressource is a bit strange... did you try to run the updater with the repair option? (Go to planeshift installation directory in a dos box and type "psupdater.exe --repair"). Maybe it is just a corrupt file :)

Ok, I ran the psupdate --repair command and it found 3 files to replace:

- art/pslaunch.zip
- data/gui/pslaunch.xml
- pslaunch.cfg

Typed y to download the files and did so successfully. Ran the command again and it displayed a message saying that all files passed the integrity check. Deleted the error log file and got the same results as before. I'll copy them again(just in case I'm missing something).

<..\..\src\client\sound\pssoundmngr.cpp:219 psSoundManager::Setup SEVERE>
Couldn't find iSoundRender!
Couldn't create Resource 'sound.standardButtonClick'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.toolbar'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.cancel'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.ok'

Couldn't create Resource 'gui.scrollup'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.shortcut'
Couldn't create Resource 'gui.quit'

Thanks for the help Sen.

Hi

Hmmm... if no one else in the forum has an idea I'd try to check in irc (#planeshift-build channel) as additional way to get help. No idea what it could be myself right now, sorry. (Btw, what graphic card do you have? NVidia, ATI..)

I have the same problem. Whenever I log in, right after entering Account and Password I get a revolving image of an empty podium. There's a "waiting on server data" title but nothing else happens. This occurs on both servers (fragnetics and ezpcusa).
I've run the Updater, entered 7777 as UDP TCP exceptions. Nothing works.

Does anyone have a solution to this one?

 :-[ I totally forgot about the system specs, so here they are.

Desktop :

   - AMD Athlon 64 1.81 GHz
   - 2 GB RAM(not sure if it's DDR2/4 or what it is)
   - Nvidia GeForce 8600GT 256MB

Laptop(Dell Inspiron 1525) :

   - Intel Core2Duo T5750 2Ghz
   - 1.99 GB RAM
   - 965 Express Chipset(if that is any help)

At the moment I'm  trying to run the game on my laptop. I don't really care if the game looks good at this stage I just want to get it working first. As such I have used the setup application to adjust all the settings to a minimum.

BTW Shenok. do you get the same error log file as I do? Maybe post your file and we can see if the 2 of us can't figure this out.

Don't know if I can help RG.

I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 and my problem looks the same. The error log isn't even created on my computer. The client just keeps on waiting for server data forever.

I did see the errors you mentioned on my error log b4 so I searched the board and found out this solution:

In psclient.cfg comment this line:
Code:
System.Plugins.iSndSysRenderer = crystalspace.sndsys.renderer.openal
by adding a semicolon at the start.

This means you won't have music or sound once you log in but hey, all we wanna do is log in right now.

Ok, so I did what Shenok said(thanks Shenok) and although the I'm still getting the same problem, the error log file has changed. I'll post it now:

<..\..\src\common\net\connection.cpp:146 psNetConnection::GetConnByIP SEVERE>
Non Server message...
<..\..\src\common\net\connection.cpp:146 psNetConnection::GetConnByIP SEVERE>
Non Server message...
<..\..\src\common\net\connection.cpp:162 psNetConnection::HandleUnknownClient SEVERE>
Message from outside received... hackint?!?

I don't really know what the output means but it looks to me as if some kind of connection is not being made? Well, at least it looks as if there is some progress being made. :)

Thanks for the help so far.
