Darkfall Phail!
« on: July 18, 2009, 05:23:01 am »
Apparently, having a ton of "professional" devs doesn't have anything to do with making a good game. Now, this has become something of a fecal storm in the Darkfall community and Eurogamer has commissioned a second review, but Eurogamers editors are standing by their first writer and refusing to remove this review.

Quote
Sadly, every little thing Darkfall does is tragic, but without a personality that might make you feel sorry for its developers, Aventurine. From the grubby textures and grammatically incorrect quest text to the anarchic control system, any attempt to glean joy from this torrid husk of an entertainment product is met with disdain. It's almost as if Darkfall doesn't want you to play

PlaneShift may not be finished, the NPCs may go down often, the skill and magic system is unbalanced and incomplete... but the working vision for this game as finished reads like an enlightened blueprint for everything that should be avoided when creating an MMO. Take your time, make your game. A ton of money and commercial resources has NOTHING to do with the ability to produce a good game that many will enjoy for a long time.

Here's the MetaFilter entry as well, in case you feel like reading...

Ehh who cares about Darkfall, PlaneShift isn't open PvP with looting.

Just list what you think we all should be interested in and save us the time.

I am knocking the game and its silly nerdrage community, not the review.  I once said I might try it out, but now all the people I know who played it are waiting for Mortal Online.

The lesson I see is don't make an MMO that attracts a pathetic, immature community.

Thank you for writing that out a bit more. We agree, amazingly enough.

Towns with everybody in underpants ?
Brilliant !
One of the best examples I've ever read of good intents leading to absurd results.

After reading parts of the first review, I'm not too sure why he was knocking the inventory/loot system.  Games like this (such as Ultima Online) do not use a grid for displaying inventory like PlaneShift and most other games do; instead containers are represented as a rectangle containing a bunch of images for items, stacks of items, and nested containers.  PlaneShift inventory has a 32 item/stack limit, which can be expanded by replacing inventory slots with containers, while something like Ultima Online has, say, a 125 item/stack limit for any container, where item count is recursive into containers.  This matters in games that are FFA PvP with looting because MMOs that use the grid-style inventory make it too convenient to clear out another player's corpse, while MMOs that use the Ultima Online-style make you search for any goods that the player is carrying.  That was the only thing I saw, so I can sort-of understand why the first reviewer was an idiot.

EDIT:  Holy hell, that video is hilarious.  I suppose this guy represents the entire Darkfall community.

Having played beta I can say that it's really not a terrible game.  However it's not worth $50 + monthly.

(Also, test post)

"Hyperion orders their naked zerg to bind at Ed Zitron's house to eliminate the threat. Unfortunately, they get distracted by the mine."

Seriously, what does that even mean? What happened to English? Its the Jumblies!
I suggest the statue of Laanx gets turned into a statue of Parallo <3. An NPC could never replace the huge hole he left in my heart when he died  :'(

Agreed, Parallo. That video was one of the funniest things I have seen all year. I just watched it again.

They did post a second review on this...

Guess what? If I won't pay for WoW, then I won't pay for Dorkfall.

He represents the Darkfall community, so saying completely random nonsensical things like this is the norm over there.
