Idiot cheese?!?!
« on: May 04, 2003, 06:20:02 pm »
We boycott French stuff by tastefully replacing the ?French? with ?Freedom?. Now, some of their companies are advertising on commercials and suchlike by replacing the ?American? with ?Idiot?. Not only is that not clever at all (they can?t even alliterate), it?s downright rude and assuming. Will those French people ever be nice?

What\'s wrong with replacing \"American\" with \"Idiot\".  In many steriotypical cases, it\'s probably correct.  It very well could have just been a response to Americans changing \"French\" to \"Freedom\".  That\'s just an idiot thing to do to begin with.

Most people can\'t even spell in English and they use it... \'nuff said.

\"French\" fries aren\'t french.  Nor is \"french\" toast and a whole bunch of other things that are labelled French.  I suppose if America really wants to make a \"statement\" about its Freedom it can stop tormenting people under cover of its Patriot Act and return the Statue of Liberty since the French gave it to them in the first place (and that is an irony of itself).

I don\'t find changing the name of certain foods because a country decided not to follow your own ideas even remotely \"tasteful\".  Indeed, it\'s pretty bloody idiotic.  Conversely, I don\'t see how anyone can get bent out of shape when the bluff is called.

If the shoe fits, don\'t complain about the style of it.

Maybe, rather than whingeing, one can just say \"Right, that was really stupid of us to get so uppity about your political beliefs, we apologise?\"  Or is that not \"free\" enough?

Call me crazy...but that seems rather sensible.

i sense that there\'s gonna be another one of those .eu-.us wars here. i hate those ...can someone just close down this thread (and preferably delete it) before it goes to far? ...nothing against free speech, it\'s just that i don\'t think free speech and flame wars that cause (even more) hatred are quite the same.

Huh? What does .eu-.us war mean? I\'ve never before heard that term. I assume it means Europe vs. United Stantes, but it could be \"you\" (spelled weird, but with the sam pronsunciation) vs. \"us\" (meaning the third person plural pronoun). It could probably mean something else too.  Either way, I don\'t understand the spelling and the period at the beginning.

Its not only that the gov\'t disagreed, but the fact they did it because they had billions of oil options for the oil fields in southern Iraq when sanctions were lifted. Russia, Germany, and France were all countries that the UN gave all the oil for food contracts to, that amounted to BILLIONS of dollars, then the UN took off 2% of all the sales, to pay for \"Admistrative Costs\", therefore, the UN, Russia, Germany, and France, who didnt want war to take place, were the entities that made the most out of the status quo... They made the most money with the sanctions, and would make the most money IF the sanctions were lifted, IF saddam stayed in power. The french also gave the Iraqi Regime crimials passports to flee through Syria into Europe... They aided war criminals to flee to Europe, which in my book isnt too cool. If the regime is gone, so are the contracts, which = nothin for those countries.

One of the great wars, we also changed \"frankfurters\" to \"hotdogs\", french fries are only called french fries in America (as far as I know). Personally, I dont care for calling them \"Freedom Fries\" though I love the country I\'m in as well as the gov\'t (even if I dont always agree) the freedom is more of a political thing, when I\'d rather just call them \"frys\" instead. So call them whatever you want, but its not like a call shoes \"China Nikes\" (or wherever Nike has their plants) A name is a name is a name, It should not be rude to millions of people, nor

I have nothing against the French people, rather against some of the choices made by the gov\'t. And I dont call them freedom fries either... I dont see why \"freedom\" is degrading to the french, when \"Idiot cheese\" is degrading to the Americans. I dont see calling them \"freedom fries\" but if any French find that rude, I\'d like to know.

(I don\'t mean to be rude if I\'m coming across that way, I\'d rather debate a topic with POVs, rather than insults.. Plus I just got back from a one sided forum where all the debates were... One sided, all other opinions were shot down instantly, and I hope I havent picked any of that up. Tell me if I do though. )

Screw any of this to do with Iraq.  C\'mon, some idiot in America decides to change the names on an ill-informed and ethnocentric basis, and what do Americans do?  Make fun of it for a while and get it in the news.  Now other idiots change the name because they think it is cool to be like the man in the news.  I\'m American, and I\'m proud to say I hate my society in all its display and decadence.  Unfortunately, the world is somehow getting caught up in our society and it is spreading like a disease.  I am honestly thinking as socialism as a better system... at least with it, a person can stick out.  (Before you begin to flame me about the last sentence, think about it.  The obvious irony is true.  If you don\'t get it, ask the next person you see wearing designer jeans what makes them stand out, and then ask the same question of thenext twenty sporting piercings.  If you don\'t get it then, don\'t reply)

Hmm regarding European nations bagging a bulk of the existing old-for-food contracts, the opposite would be true of the Americans wouldn\'t it? If you didn\'t have much of a stake in Iraq and you wanted the oil *now* then it would make quite a lot of sense to wage a war to end all existing rival contracts so that you could establish your own?

Well I understand the cost so far was something like US$70billion, but I think there are a multitude of issues that any one nation cannot take into account all at the same time. Getting rid of Saddam is good, yet killing so many Iraqis not so...

War is a messy business but I find it sick when people try to justify it as a means of freedom when they aren\'t the ones going to lose the bulk of their civilians/troops. It\'s all very complicated but I am worried about people who have extreme views on either side of the fence - What makes them so sure that what they believe in is right?

I agree with grey....I hate alot of my society.

but i dont get it.
Is it sarcasm?
well I\'m guessing its sarcasm, anyway.

I love the idea that we can be unique.
Maybe that was one of the perks that the founding fathers intended us to have. like freedom for all; witch still isn\'t a reality.

look at the way bastards got over on slavery, then segregation. Not just 50 years ago My aunt really did have to sit at the back of the bus.
while she\'s happy that she survived this part of her life.
I think she\'s a bit disgusted that it\'s wholey dismiss by the mass\'s as just one of those catchy rap tunes. freedom...lol
