Debts and Debtors
« on: November 17, 2009, 05:52:11 am »
Kaerli handed Kisatol a handful of golden coins, and a few whispered words sealed the deal as she received her prize in return.  Handling it with care, she gently tucked the small pouch away.

In the meantime, Darven wondered what happened, why this somewhat mysterious lady had simply refused to gamble with him...and what it would mean for his future.

After finishing some archery practice, Kaerli walked back to Hydlaa, warily observing Ukabnu's Cutthroats lying in wait for less fortunate (or less skilled) travelers, and hatching a devious plan that would send Darven to where he belonged: Dakkru.  She thought to himself "Most debts are paid in Tria, but this one can only be paid in blood..."  Now, if she could only come up with a good way to implement such a thing, a gamble with the goddess of death herself...a game that the player could not win.

[suggestions for a "Dakkru's Gamble" appreciated at this point, I know about the "poison one out of 3 or one out of 5 drinks" approach, but would like to see something more...immediate in its effect]

[EDIT: nvm, got one :)]

Kaerli checked her pack, and pulled out a bag of sheathed daggers and a vial.  She pulled the dagger out and unsheathed it, carefully working the vial's contents into the inside of its sheath before returning the dagger to its place.  She then disposed of the empty vial in the furnace at Harnquist's and headed off towards Darven, hood down, cloak pulled tight, sack in hand.

Her approach was marked by a muted "Hello..." and a wave from the Ylian.  She replied with "Hello sir, I present to you a gamble...if you win, you get Tria sufficient to live out your life...if you lose, you lose big."  Darven's look changed to one of high interest and he replied "Certainly, what does it entail?"   Kaerli's answer was simple: "Simply take a dagger from this bag without looking, unsheathe it, cut yourself on the arm with it, sheathe it again, and return it to the bag."   Darven nodded slowly "Hmmm...for how much Tria am I playing?"  Her reply of "Hundreds of thousands." proved more than satisfactory for him, as he proceeded to do exactly as the lady stated.  "Good, that's how it goes...now for the second round."  He picked another dagger from the bag, and unsheathed it, cutting his forearm with the blade again before returning it sheathed.  "Alright, feel like playing some more?"  Darven nodded and reached into the bag, producing a third dagger.  He unsheathed it and cut his forearm the third time, blood running slowly down it as he pulled the dagger out and gave it a momentary wide-eyed look, stammering "What...is...this...?" before his eyes fell on the cloaked lady before him and he tried to lunge at her; but collapsed, the envenomed blade spilling from his hand and hitting the earth before Kaerli.  She picked it up, cleaned the blades one by one off on Darven's shirt, and proceeded to rewrap all six in carefully saved oilskins from her pack before placing them in her pack, the six empty sheathes placed in the bag to be disposed of.  Her work here had been done, and much to her astonishment, she had caught the guards and Darven by utter surprise.  As the gambling man took his last few breaths, he tried to scream, but it was far too late for that, the work of the apothecary had done him in already and he slipped away to face Dakkru, with neither Tria to his name nor a means of paying back what he owed Yliakum.  That had just been done.

When Kaerli reached Harnquist's, she loosened her cloak and flipped her hood down, then proceeded to throw the bag in the furnace for disposal, the daggers in her pack safely now.  Would anyone put the clues together?  Would anyone even try, or would that be it for Darven and his debts?  She thought the theories over to herself as she walked down the road to the arena.

[This is my first story here, so please comment :)]

[also thanks to Raelas, Zilyn, and Lusserall for participating in this story ingame, they were the ones who provided the ingredients needed for this to happen]

[P.S. ty Dermathil for the idea for Dakkru's Gamble]

[also, thx to the Settings team for their quest-writing work]

[EDIT: added more credits, made minor continuity fix to the story]

If it was a roleplay event in game, this should be moved.

:whistling: The main body of the story is here because it's a story...there was ingame RP attached to it though.
