Official Planeshift Trailer - Pre-production Phase
« on: December 02, 2009, 11:16:53 am »
Hi!
Some time ago we spoke about making a PlaneShift trailer with in game scenes, and we are now willing to do it for real. Actually given the fact we have external people helping us, we have some urgence to at least create a sample for the trailer recording in the next few days. It should not be perfect, but should prove the feasibility of doing it, and should give an indication of the timings in the trailer script.

There are some scenes that require a crowd (about 10 people) and we need actors  :sorcerer:  :detective:  for this. Also there are some other main roles needed.

Participating into this is pretty easy:
- you need to have PlaneShift version 0.5 installed on your machine and be able to connect to ezpc test server. As you know 0.5 is in pre-release, but it's working. See main site for details. We want to use 0.5 to get the newest features, like mounts into the trailer.
- At given recording times (see below) connect to 0.5 test server with your favorite character and check for "Talad", sending him a message with /tell
- you will be requested to use your char or to create a new one. You will using your equipment or be equipped with new one based on the cutscene needs.
- you will have to follow directions on what to do, like "sit there and speak with other people", "jump down from that cliff and attack the Ulbernault", etc...
- some coordination is needed to have success in the recording, so be patient and follow the director of the scene.
- each session will last from 15 minutes to 1 hour, you can leave at any time, but please plan to be there for at least 30 minutes.
- we cannot have spectators, because they will pollute the scene recording, so show up only if you want to be part of the recording.

Recording times:
02 - December - 2009 at 19:00 Central European Time (ENDED! We spent most of the time to setup the place where we will shoot)
02 - December - 2009 at 23:00 Central European Time (first raw test completed. The old man speaks to the crowd, and then he gets killed by an arrow )
04 - December - 2009 at 19:00 Central European Time  (second raw test completed. While the old man speaks a group of rogues and Tyber approach the camp, and then the camp is attacked )
04 - December - 2009 at 23:00 Central European Time

Please check back this page before connecting, times are subject to change at any time!

More recording sessions will follow up, including some in the weekend.

You are encouraged to show up in every session, the more sessions you show up the more chances we have to have a crowd if needed.

Thanks!

That's the one my brother made music for, isn't it? Will it be used? I made him do it, I think he will kill me if it won't :P

Since I was a wee lad I've maintained a healthy acting ability. From charming a lass into a quick shag  :P or telling a lie to a bouncer about my age. Talad, you need -this- guy.

Wow, is it just me or does the "first raw test" video have really low framerate  ::|

It's 15 fps but that doesn't mean the original was recorded as 15 fps.  Also the bitrate sucks but he could've encoded it that way to reduce the filesize.  If I recall correctly, CS's movierecorder plugin defaults to 33 using LZO (lossless) compression, and its output files are ridiculously huge.

What I don't understand is why it has to be 1024x768, or 4:3 to begin with.  I know Talad requested 1024x768 before, but that was years and years ago.  Sites like YouTube now accept videos as big as 1280x720.  The trailer is being made because magazines requested one long ago, and times have changed:  I don't know what quality or aspect ratio they prefer nowadays.

Regarding an efficient video compression:

Talad and Co.: Don't forget that I am quite experienced in video editing and compression. You know I am "rather a technician than an artist". ;)

Several years of membership in the doom9 network (at the edge of video development), super moderator in the german doom9/Gleitz board, years of experience with AviSynth as scriptable and filtering video frameserver...

Let me help you making the trailer looking :o

You don't see animators animating shows at like 640x480. No, the masters are friggin' huge. As should the raw trailer video.

It's nice talking, but then we have to record it for real. I've seen that going at resolutions higher than 1024 generates very big files (nearly unmanageble) and the framerate is the one provided by movierecorder. If you have more ideas/experience please join at the given time and, when the scene is setup, you will be able to record it. Next time is in few hours from now.
