Issue getting past splash screen

I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue.  I haven't played for awhile and decided to start playing again.  I have 2 different characters under different email accounts.  And I just created a 3rd for fun.  I took the newly created character through the tutorial (like the dropdowns for talking to the NPC's).  I lost connection to the server while in the tutorial, now I'm not able to get that character into the Planeshift world - I get a "not responding" in the title bar of the splashscreen when loading.  If I try my original character, I can get into PS.  I exit that character, wait a couple of minutes, restart the PS Launcher, try the newly created char, that was working, now I get "not responding" on the splashscreen when trying to load the world.
Any ideas on what might be going on?
Is it possible the character is somehow locked?
I know that PS will load, proved by loading a different char.
Running on a XP sp3 / 3.2 Ghz / 2Gb RAM / 1GB Video - I think that I'm ok with the min reqs for running.

Delete the character and remake it.

One character is still in the tutorial.
I have another character that I was playing that is in Oja - now I can't get to that one -  POOP!!!!!  Don't want to remake that one as it my fun RP'ing character.

First try would be to delete %APPDATA%\PlaneShift and then start the launcher and deactivate things like VBO and maybe other things too you come across

It worked one time.  Then I locked up - after the restart same situation.  Tried to delete the %appdata%/planeshift again - no luck, still can't get past the splash screen to load me into the world.  Get to loading GUI and that is as far as I get.  None of my characters are working now [sob].
