I'm having trouble with segmentation faults
« on: December 21, 2009, 01:18:29 am »
I get segmentation faults when I try to run psclient from binary download.

I'm running Fedora 11, 64 bit
nvidia latest proprietary driver ver 190.42
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU    Q9400  @ 2.66GHz
8G system memory
nvidia 9800gtx+ 512M video memory

I have the game running on an old laptop with 32M video memory but it's way slow to play.  I'd like to get running again on my desktop.

I tried building locally with, I think, the lastest source code but the game says it's ver 4.03.  Not sure what I need to do.

So this is what I get:

Code: [Select]
[tim@localhost planeshift]$ cd /opt/PlaneShift
[tim@localhost PlaneShift]$ ./psclient
Your configuration files are in... /home/tim/.PlaneShift
shader lighting_default_pvl: shader lighting_default_binalpha: shader lighting_default: shader lighting_default_pvl_binalpha: ....10%....10%....10%....20%....10%....20%....20%....20%....30%....30%....40%....50%....40%....50%....60%....60%....30%....70%....70%....80%....90%....100%....80%
....90%....100%

[tim@localhost PlaneShift]$

dmesg says this at the end. I ran twice so two messages.

Here some things I've tried:

From other post I thought maybe OpenAL was a problem.  My sound was working fine but another game needed /dev/dsp.  Adding the modules to the kernel fixed the other game but no luck here.
#>modprobe snd_pcm_oss
#>modprobe snd_mixer_oss
I don't know much about this openal stuff so I'll post my openalrc file at the end.

Changed graphics and shaders to low and unchecked some graphics options.  No change.

Changed ThreadManager.AlwaysRunNow = false in ~/.PlaneShift/planeshift.cfg to true.

Changed selinux permissions to permissive.

Built game locally.  Seems to run fine but is version .403.  I need to speak to devs another day to find out what went wrong here.

I've changed things in openalrc but didn't seem to affect anything good or bad.

Code: [Select]
[tim@localhost PlaneShift]$ cat /etc/openalrc
(define devices '(esd))

;;(define devices '(alsa native))

;; uncomment this to output via the 2nd soundcard
;;(define alsa-device "plughw:2,0")

[tim@localhost PlaneShift]$ cat ~/.openalrc
Here's the short version of lspci

I've played some on the under spec laptop.  There are a lot interesting changes that have been made and I'd like to see be able to see more.  The laptop is wearing me out though, with the long load times, jerky movements, not responding messages and tiny view screen of overlapping windows and text.  It gets pretty hot too.  and the worst part is the laptop is running Windows Vista  :'(  I'd run it under linux but the radeon driver doesn't work well with this game and fglrx doesn't support my card in fedora 11.

Similiar problem for me. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with 64bit client and Nvidia 8600 Graphics, configured with two monitors in twinview if it makes a difference. Planeshift version 5.0.  When i try to use pslaunch, and hit play, the launcher will disappear and reappear. So i try to hit play again, and it does it again, sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. When i try to run psclient manually, here's what happens.

Quote
charims@charims-ubuntu:/opt/PlaneShift$ ./psclient
Your configuration files are in... /home/charims/.PlaneShift

crystalspace.pluginmgr.loadplugin:
  could not load plugin 'crystalspace.sndsys.renderer.null'
Segmentation fault

This happens probably about four fifths of the time. Whereas a fifth of the time the client starts up and I can play.

Try deleting shadercache from ~/.PlaneShift and adding ThreadManager.AlwaysRunNow = true   to the end of psclient.cfg or planeshift.cfg (or change the line currently saying that (but false) to true)

I uninstalled, removed the /opt/PlaneShift and ~/.PlaneShift, ran repair, updated and did the above ,but everything is the same.

Is anyone having problems or success with a PCI Express video card similar to mine? It worked fine in .403.

no it's not you shouldn't have any trace of any fb module or nouveau module or they will conflict. you must have nvidia. right now we support only official drivers on linux considered the immaturity of opensource solution (sorry but it's the reality)

Same here. Only get Segment fault all the time.
Tried surgestions above same result.

I run 64bit version of PlaneShift for Linux

If I run ./psclient directly I get:
Code: [Select]

  could not load plugin 'crystalspace.sndsys.renderer.null'

RAM: 6GB DDR3 1.6GHz
Graphics Card: Nvidia 8600GT 512MB Silent
OS: Ubuntu 9.10 64bit
Graphics driver: Ubuntu Restricted drivers recomended; nvidia 185

Iv tride various combinations of graphical settings for the game without success.
I play both other native Linux 3D games aswell as graphical heavy Windows games through Wine and CrossOver Games without major issues.

delete the shadercache and disable threading as explained in other threads (pslaunch has an option too)

Did you try running the game a few times? It does that still sometimes for me, but it works usually with the 5th try or so.

Same problem here.
Fedora 12 x64, with Nvidia 8600GS. I'm using latest restricted Nvidia driver available at this time for Fedora 12, which is 190.42.

The game had never started. And there is no shadercache in ~/.PlaneShift.
I've also tried adding ThreadManager.AlwaysRunNow = true  to the end of psclient.cfg. Still no success.

OK, I managed to run the game  \\o//

I've read the forum and found the post with a hint.
So, I removed all *.so files from /opt/PlaneShift/libs (in fact I moved them to temporary folder).
The game did not started until I put libCg.so an libCgGL.so back (to  /opt/PlaneShift/libs). And now the game works!  \\o//

P.S. It looks like the *.so files shipped with the game don't like the current state of OS, or vice versa  ???

\\o// Yeah!!!  Just downloaded the update today and it works.  Looks great! I've been using different OS I installed to play, now I have to move my shortcuts.  Good work!
