How much RAM do those of you struggling have on your MacBooks?

I have 2GB on my MacBook and with the way things run with PS active, plus looking at the activity monitor, I feel that lack of RAM is my main problem.

With adjusting the Graphics Settings within pslaunch I was able t get the game to load, but was essentially unplayable with the slowness. However, the slowness was not limited to only PS while playing. It was my entire system....I was basically out of RAM page-filing like mad on several occasions. PS seems to get up over 1GB of RAM usage fairly commonly, and with Mac OS X already taking up a large chunk, I was out of luck.

So, I needed to get more RAM, or free up more RAM... without spending money.

My solution was to use Linux on my MacBook. Using Ubuntu (Linux Mint in my case) the OS boots up to about 250 - 300 MB of RAM in use while idle. This gives me an extra 500 or so MB to give to PS.

Doing that, with a bit of pslaunch tweaking, PS 0.5.3 is now running on my 2 year-old MacBook with an experience similar to that with 0.4.

My experience is that 2 GB RAM on a MacBook isn't enough. So, maybe buy more RAM if that's an option, or install Linux Mint or Ubuntu (noting that this is...dangerous)

If anyone is interested in the no-cost Linux solution, PM me and maybe I can make a thread for us to work on getting us MacBookers playing in game on Linux.

[I will edit in my pslaunch graphics settings when I get more time, in case that helps anyone. they were a bit random, but they've got me playing. I would at least try these first with Mac OS X since it takes like 5 minutes instead of a couple of days (or more for learning) with the linux route.]

My System:
MacBook from spring 2008
Mac OS X 10.5.8 / Linux Mint 8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
Graphics - Intel GMA X3100 (puny little thing :P)

Could somebody delete this for me? I hit quote instead of modify and didn't realize till it was too late.  Sorry

3.x and 4.x support is the last problem of macosx 10.6 users. they are worsening the opengl drivers each version.

I'm not sure, I have 2GB too and 0.5.1 - or maybe it was the first version of 0.5.2 - ran (almost) smoothly.

My solution was to use Linux on my MacBook. Using Ubuntu (Linux Mint in my case) the OS boots up to about 250 - 300 MB of RAM in use while idle. This gives me an extra 500 or so MB to give to PS.

I'm in Ubuntu right now, and look here: I type and the words appear on the screen, just like a mac!  :D (and yes, I've read the mac pages and applied the patches - yup, I can still type!). Any advice would be more than welcome, Thoss.

EDIT: Countermand. I've followed the instructions on the sticky just to discover 9 pages after (nice sticky!) that the /opt directory suggested in the first post was wrong. See you the next osx update.

EDIT 2: Countercountermand. I'm an idiot. PS runs quite well on Linux, there are those scary startup messages but who cares...
