Planeshift 2D!
« on: January 10, 2010, 08:24:14 pm »
Hey, this may seem like a stupid post but I've been frustrated with the increasing hardware requirements of newer games and I've been reverting to a lot of old classic video games that run fast and contain great content. Do you think a 2D implementation of Planeshift that could sync with the 3D version is an interesting idea?

Might be nice but a huge project. You would have to basically redo all 3D art. Also some maps have different levels sometimes and that is hard to do in a full 2D fashion.

Hmm.. I don't doubt at all that it may be a major task, though I'm glad that it's plausible.

This is not so ridiculous. PS is mainly about role playing. People have been role playing with only pen and paper (Dungeons and Dragons). Why do you need fancy 3D graphics to do that? Of course in 3D it looks nicer, more realistic and is possibly also more fun but it is not really essential. Having a 2D client would be nice for older hardware and doesn't even have to look that bad. With 2D (or possibly isometric) views you can also get pretty nice and convincing environments.

Wow, I didn't know that existed. The developments of some projects are interesting. I like MUDs, though what I had in mind were some pseudo 3d environments.

If you accuse me just like that you're only going to have to present better arguments then that (in fact then none). As far as I know I said nothing untrue or wrong. I just said that 2D is also a valid way to do RP and 3D is not essential (just nice to have).

well, that's it. you said nothing untrue or wrong. what you said was irrelevent. 3d isn't necessary to have great rp; however, replacing 3d with 2d would make ps... ummm... not ps. it's sypposed to be a 3d mmorpg. devs wouldn't ever consider making a 2d version. possibly in the future (couple hundred years? :P) but i doubt it

oh snap..... you are a developer. wow i am blind lol

Well originally PS was intended to be 2D (see above in this thread). So many things in PS were actually designed with 2D graphics in mind. So it was considered in the past.

Tsk, tsk, Sarras stop trolling. 2D PlaneShift would be interesting.
