Extreme lag (freeze) after last update. Can't play.

Got the last update tonight and tried to play. Just stood frozen (maybe a hunch of a move but that was all). The lag was even noticeable at the character selection screen. Tried taking out sound (most of the new update looked like music) but no improvement, put graphics at minimum but no improvement, loaded with a different char at a different location but almost no improvement either.

Then I run from terminal so I could report what's wrong properly (my specs AMD-64 with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex - just upgraded yesterday from Hardy).

The problem is recompiling of shaders after start even when shader cache is on, which takes about 2 - 5 minutes, before you can move.
I had this settings for previous client and all worked just fine (except first run after deleting shadercache):

Planeshift.Loading.Cache = true
PlaneShift.Loading.BackgroundWorldLoading = false
now  the client always compiles shaders again (which is annoying)...

Edit: Seems new version uses file instead of directory, so deleting the whole shadercache directory should help (I just wonder why the client doesn't detect shadercache directory and delete it while present prior to start compiling shaders)

just a little side note, but for me, ps runs better with graphics on medium then it does on low, not really sure why

As I have said elsewhere, I don't seem to have any file or directory (anywhere in all the hard drive) named "shadercache" or "shader cache" or anything of the like.

Possibly but I used to have it in medium. I only lowered graphics because of this new problem.

oh when it seemed like you were frozen did you just log out and quit? cus for me my char. select is always laggy, but thr first time i played since the new update i immediately crashed and a thing popped up sayin it would tell the dev's
and then the second time it semmed like i was frozen but i tried tunring left and right and eventually th elagg went away when the npc's and  items around loaded

Took me a while to find that darn shadercache folder.  It is in the Planeshift user settings folder, not the client folder.  You may have to turn the hidden files/folders off to find it.  Should be in your /home/[user]/.PlaneShift folder, same place as the log files and screenshots.  I was having issues in my Ubuntu 64 bit client, couldn't find a fix, so went to my Vista 64 bit install, and it is much better.  I'll test out completely deleting that folder, I just wiped out all the files in it and that didn't seem to help.  Would have the same issue, locking up, not crashing, just couldn't move or do anything for a long time.

Thanks -stf-.  That was it, the shadercache.zip file was not being created when the shadercache folder was still there.  I think I just glazed over what you typed earlier since I had no idea what was going on and what a shadercache thingee was to begin with.

You must delete it, new version uses file and if there is directory with same name, it can't create the file and recompiles shaders every time it needs them.

It is *not* in the install as weltall already stated. It is generated automatically when you start PlaneShift.

It is *not* in the install as weltall already stated. It is generated automatically when you start PlaneShift.

My suggestion is that pslaunch should delete both shadercache directory or file (whatever is present in the system) automatically with update or after changing settings:
1) to reflect new changes in the cache
2) to save people problems with it
But not delete it just while starting, because when there is no update, the cache speeds up the loading.

the problem is that cache shouldn't need to be deleted at all (as a matter of fact on my computer it always works well and i change the shaders more times in the times in 1 2 weeks than the players since release and all works fine, the shaders are recompiled as needed)
