"....get more done"
« on: February 09, 2010, 05:34:36 pm »
Ok, folks: here’s the deal.

I have been playing Planeshift on and off for a few years, and everytime I come back to it I think “have further items been implemented” The obvious answer is: No.
What I am asking is: Is there anywhere a map? I know this has been asked numerous times, and will no doubt be again.

I have read the some of the other posts regarding this, and most of the time people are saying “Well, it’s more fun to explore if you dont have a map”

Ok, I can see and definatley understand this view point. I also know that Planeshift isn’t a complete game yet, but surely a mini map of some description would be A: helpful , and B: sensible.
Why “sensible?” Well put it this way: If you have a quest and you need to get somewhere and have no idea how to get there you will be aimlessly wondering around for days, and even if you ask someone you get cryptic replies.
Also a map of some description enables you to get more done which, in the long/short run makes the entire game alot more fun. Does it not? Yes, ok, there are numerous sign posts on what can only loosley be called “roads” but they only give you a general direction, and tbh, are far too spaced out to be of any real use.
Anyway, mini point of view session over. But I stick by my original question: Any maps out there?
Cheers

Ps: I have considered making one myself, but I have no clue how to go about it. I also know that there is a map in the “library” but is so out-dated that columbus would have issues....

I recall buying some nice in-game maps once. I think is was from someone in the Explorer's guild. Perhaps try them.

Andrew we made it so players can make their own maps in game and sell them to other players. For most people this is sufficient.

I suggest everyone who wants mini-maps to send pms to Talad.

Why is it men never just ask for directions? XD
Make some friends in Hydlaa and they'll gladly guide you through Yliakum. :)
Also, if you get in touch with the right player, there are some folk who carry maps that they made themselves.
There's even a wealthy bookseller walking around the city. ;D

Melly, Its a silly social rule.

If a woman asks a man for directions he'll gladly assist her.
If a man asks a man for directions he'll feel stupid asking, and may suffer an eye roll or a condescending stare.
if a man spends hours trying to find his destination on his own he will gain knowledge of the area and walk away with his self respect and the ability to help the next woman who asks for directions.
if a woman asks another woman for directions, she will simply redirect the woman to a man for help.

Makes logical sense right ?

Now what happens in PlaneShift is a different story since most of the female characters played by men !?

That gives me an idea for a poll question !

You left out what happens if a man asks a woman for directions... (or is there some ancient "man-code" I'm missing where that should never happen? :P)

Either way I figure two things could happen:

1. She thinks you are coming on to her and pepper-sprays you in the face. Fortunately the blindness isn't permanent but, ironically you'll -really- need someone to help guide you now that you can't see anything.

or

2. She finds your rebellious disregard for stereotypes and outmoded conventions refreshing and bold, throws herself into your arms and only asks that wherever it is you're going, you take her with you.

Alright, so there may be some -slight- variation between these two extremes but, still strikes me as possibly the most entertaining option on the board.

Random obligatory orange writing <--

And now something actually on topic! The ability to make maps has always struck me as an awesome idea, right now its just the system that needs to be improved upon... like most things in PS, it is an ever evolving process and I think once refined will make a great fusion of IC realism and OOC necessity. "Radar" style maps just seem like something that would be needlessly copied from other games and possibly screw with immersion, i.e. "Meet me at coordinates 0, 135, Bob!" I think time is what is necessary to work out the kinks rather than a new and less creative approach to the problem.

Ya know, its kinda funny that I never stopped to consider the possibility of a man asking a woman for directions XD
I think that accidental omission was influenced by *man code*  :)

Hi All,

Cheers for the replies. I know its an old and very tired topic, and your all probably very sick of hearing about it..

it is a shame that there isn't a "cartography" skill, or in fact some form of up to date map, even if its just a basic "city by city" style. it wouldnt have to be the real world in miniture, but a reference to enable people to actually find their way to somewhere without getting lost all the time.

I did try asking in game, but got chuckled at and told "just head out of east gate and you will get there" ---- tried that: got lost.

Anyways: Again, I appreciate the replies..

Cheers All

Andy

Keep asking. Keep in mind that you are talking to people's characters and not the players themselves when talkinf in main.
If you were to ask one of my characters for directions you might be led astray ;)

It takes nothing to make a map. It couls be as simple as a verbal map for your own personal use.

Another way of doing this is to embed the directions in a fictional story.
Take a look at the "Near Death by the Velnishi Cave" for example. It verbally illustrates how to get to shindrock's crater
From oja. ( Do a search on "velnishi cave" )

A simple verbal map for personal use might look something like this:

Oja -> crater -> infiron river -> green coridor -> 3 points on mountain ->. Mountain with tree on top -> hydlaa

Likewise a town could described verbally

Standing in fountain facing laanx temple:
Forward: temple
Left: stairs to kada el's
Right: library
Behind: winch
Behind and left: harnquist
Likewise the location of npc's might be written down. In relation to certain landmarks or npcs.

Kada el's
Allelia: behind bar
Jomed: upstairs kitchen
Jefecra: ....

Etc...

If you find it hard to make large maps then perhaps try lots of smaller maps - each one centered around a landmark or popular npc.
