Favorite Movies: Discuss Them Here
« on: February 22, 2010, 07:50:59 pm »
Much like Kiern's Favorite Music thread, this is where you can post good movies. I'm not too old, and I haven't seen all of the movies that are worth watching that were released before...lets say the 80's, so post any of your favorites, and if you have the time add a side note to why the movie/movies are your favorite. I'll say some of my favorite's [in no specific order] If it's in another language please add that on the side!

-Gone With The Wind [U.S.A] Classic, that's all I have to say.

-Amelie [France] I love this movie because it is well written, has good humor, and the acting and cinema-tics are great as well. But what i love the most about this movie is it's score by Yann Tiersen. [This movie is in French but has English subtitles]

-Titanic [U.S.A] I love this movie first and foremost for the screenplay, the acting is great on all of the parts, and the CGI is remarkable for it's time.

-Pan's Labyrinth [Spain..i think] Great storytelling, great acting, cinematic-ally well done, and all together a good movie with the exception that it is a bit sad.  :( [Spanish with English subtitles]

-Spirited Away [Japan] Definitely the best animated movie in the history of film in my opinion. Beautiful watercolor style, a story that can entertain a 6 year old child, and engage a 88 year old's at the same time. The score is great, and it is one of those movies you can watch over and over again and still notice something new. [You can find this movie dubbed in about any language]

Slumdog Millionaire [U.S.A] I love this movie because it simply caught the essence of poverty in the world, and it captured it with great cinema-tics to add. The acting was alright, and the score was very upbeat. One of those movies you just can't miss, and will make you feel happy!

Avatar [U.S.A] We all know about this movie if we don't have our heads stuck in the ground. I thought it was a very simple story that stood for environmentalism, and was one of the most beautiful movies i have ever seen. One i say you can't miss in the theaters.

You don't have to make things as complicated as I did, just post the movie, and if there are two for that title please post the version you are talking about.

Reply away! :D [I wouldn't mind seeing some debates about movies!    ]

I agree with a lot of those movies Geoni! Let me think...what's good...sorry I can't say why I like them. I just do! Most of them are probably for young kids, but who says adults can't watch kid movies? :P

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (liked since I was very little)
Yellow Submarine (silly movie that doesn't really make sense, many songs come from the Beatles album "Yellow Submarine")
Waltz With Bashir (Israeli movie, talks about one man's search for memories when he was in the Lebanon War)
Le Papillon (French movie, didn't like it at first, but is actually a really cute film)
Gran Torino (Clint Eastwood. Nuff said.)
Dinosaur (awesome Disney movie, I was addicted to dinosaurs at the time)
Charlie's Angels (3 women on a mission to save the world.  What else can I say?)
The Mummy series (Brendan Fraser doesn't look like he ever ages lol)
Indiana Jones series (Harrison Ford! But watch the original trilogy. I didn't really like the 4th one)
Star Wars series (EPIC WIN)
Lord of the Rings Trilogy (\O/)
Stand By Me (I love this movie!)

That's some I can name from scanning wikipedia and off the top of my head :)

The Last Unicorn - Best animated movie in my opinion. Very unique style and storytelling, it still captures me whenever I look at it.

Hunchback of the Notre Dame - Disney version. Beautiful music and artworks, and I love the message. I can narrate this movie from beginning to end, including the music and sound effects. I broke the video because I watched it so often xD

The Illusionist - Beautiful, Mysterious, Exceptional.

Braveheart - NEVER ever give up for FREEDOM! <3 I cried from the beginning to the end xD

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Do I really need to explain? MASTERFUL.

Other jewels:
300, Pan's Labyrinth, Gladiator, As Dreams May Come, Ever After, Titanic, Howl's Moving Castle, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (Ardeth Bay FTW ;D ), Treasure Planet, Interview with the Vampire... and many many more.

Gran Torino- Clint Eastwood is a beauty (no homo)

The Hangover- Jokesss

American Gangsterr- I just loved the whole idea of this movie.

Gladiator- i really enjoyed this movie. Good action, but at the same time, proper historical facts.

@Dralion1221 Your the only other person i know who's seen Waltz with Bashir and enjoyed it \o/ I need to check out Le Papillon because that is the only one on your list that i haven't seen.

@Mellas I loved all the movies you mentioned [with the exception that i have never heard of The Last Unicorn] Some of the "other jewels" that you have mentioned are alright, I love HMC, Pans Labyrinth, Gladiator, and Titanic. I haven't heard of As Dreams May Come. Though, i didn't like 300 :P but that's just me.

@Mekora I loved all the movies you mentioned/period/

I guess my movies to see are: The Last Unicorn, Le Papillon and As Dreams May come.

Thanks, and keep them coming people!!!

Current Favorites in Alphabetical Order

Almost Famous (USA) - One kid's love affair with rock and roll + Kate Hudson before she started doing crappy rom-coms, what's not to like? Easily Cameron Crowe's best picture.

Bande à part (France) - So good Quentin Tarantino named his production company after it... apparently shot for shot scene remakes aren't the only things he steals. :P

City of God (Brazil) - Mind blowing... Awesome story structure, stylized but still very gritty and real... If I had to pick the best movie I have ever seen (not necessarily my all time favorite ;)) City of God would probably be the one.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (USA) - Proof Charlie Kaufman can make one heck of a movie... as long as he just writes the film and leaves directing to the professionals.

The Royal Tenenbaums (USA) - A little strange but, hey so am I! Wes Anderson's attention to detail in every aspect of the film is incredible plus an all star cast never hurts.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (France) - It's a musical where they literally sing every line of dialogue and it still made it on my list. I usually hate musicals. That should tell you how highly I think of this film.

Honorable Mention
High Fidelity, The Bicycle Thief (Italy), Rushmore, Good Bye, Lenin! (Germany), Lost in Translation, I Love You, Man, My Fair Lady (How do these freaking musicals keep sneaking onto my list?!), Moon, and two thumbs up for a few movies already mentioned: Stand By Me, Star Wars Trilogy (Original), and The Illusionist.

Edit: Almost forgot A Clock Work Orange ;) Definitely deserves an "honorable mention."

Oh yeah, the last unicorn was awesome! Been a while since I've seen it, but I enjoyed it! Thanks for reminding me Melly :)

Quantum of Solace was okay, was more bang then story. (we had to rewatch Casino Royale to get the story lol)

Oh just got reminded by wikipedia! Watch the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze in it. Very funny and good storyline! <3

I keep remembering films that I should have noted and it's going to seriously bug me till I add them to the list.  ::)

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Like it better each time I watch it... a single but very major oversight for my favorites list.

Even More Honorable Mentions!
The Seven Samurai (Japan) (with Yojimbo a slightly distant second), Cashback (UK) the short film and a moderate thumbs up for the feature length movie, and M (Germany) how a true thriller should be made. ;)

EDIT: Grr... and Abre Los Ojos (Spain) - The original and Tom Cruise free version of Vanilla Sky and Memento (2000) -one of those films that is never as good the second time around (like Crash) but still should be seen at least once.
