The Second Unodin Welcoming Celebration(RP) discussion

The Unodin Welcoming Celebration

Last year about this time the Daughters of Xiosia and The Call of Destiny held a Ojavedan event based on  pre-planting ceremonies in honor of Xiosia.
The Son's of Xiosia and the Daughters of Xiosia, along with CoD are interested in doing so again using a similar theme for a RP background. We are looking at as a tentative date April 9, 10, 11, of 2010. Right now it is just in the planning stages and some of the events from last year will or may be used again and/or updated accordingly. It will be a few weeks before we do the actual post but wanted to throw a heads up for everyone so we could generate some interest for it.

The unwritten plan atm is to start on that Friday night in Gugrondrid with maybe an honoring to Talad then letting things develop from that point with added events throughout the weekend by ourselves and other guilds and interested parties.
Saturday will still see us in the Gugrotrid region with a parade of guilds leading from the outpost to Hyldaa in the afternoon with later entertainment.
Sunday will more then likely start in Hydlaa and a parade or group traveling will be done to Ojaveda where the remainder of the events will be held as they were the year prior ending with a ceremony and large market.

Again this is meant as heads up to let you know that it is in planning stages, and that we will be looking for help to fill the gaps and have other events held and/or sponsored by other guilds and/or parties along the same theme of the Celebration.

I wanted also to get some thoughts or ideas on the idea as well. Not that I have run low on them yet, I am just interested in what someone else thinks on the idea.

Here is the link for last years Unodin Celebration and its order of events.

Unodin Celebration 2009
http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=34729.0

This one will be scheduled in the same manner as it was and the two summer festivals which I will post links for as well. That way you have an idea of how they worked.

Summer Festival II 2009
http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=35619.0

Summer Festival 2008
http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=32612.0

Keep in mind that this was and is meant to be an RP event of events. So events should be conducted in such a manner that skill level is not a factor needed for participation. That said I should also stress we are looking at the peaceful side of Honoring Xiosia, so tournaments and fighting events will not be considered for the Celebration.

After the event is posted I will up keep the schedule of events as it is updated

[ I am looking for someone that might be interested in a ceremony to Honor Laanx while we are in Hydlaa. One, that follows in suit of the main theme of the weekend]

Mount Races

One of the things we are looking at for the Celebration near the Outpost is Mount Racing. In keeping with the idea of staying within a competitive view for all players (at least those with mounts) we are and have been looking at a course that will allow a challenging race that will end on equal footing. I will post a description here of the course and how it was set it up as well as a few types of races we are looking at. The course will be set up near the Outpost at different times in the upcoming weeks for players to try, and to get their thoughts on it. (Please don't take the beer kegs) I have a diagram as well to give a idea of the size of the course. We reduced the number of barrels we originally started with to cut down on the chance of causing unwanted lag. I can't give you anymore on this other then a brief on how the races may be conducted and/or the set up of the track itself.

This is what we are looking at atm.

Race Track

                            O                          ___
                                                          ^
                     O   7M    O

                          O

             ------ O   7M    O ------        70-75M length
              finish              start                V
                            O                          ___

Needed: at least 7 kegs or barrels for the track and 6-8 pies or gemstones to mark the start and finish-lines.

[Judging by scale, the course is about 75 meters in length from end barrel to end barrel. End barrel groups are about 7 meters apart from the other. The barrels that mark the width set the speed of the track by establishing the boundaries. ]

Barrels will be set up at a distance that will allow for a 1 minute race consisting of three laps ( The course takes up to about half of the stamina of a character with max stats so it should allow most characters to participate fairly)

Heats or races of 2-5 participants at a time

-------------------------------------------------------------

Race Types:

Oval or track race:

The contestants will race around the outside of the barrels for the completion of three entire laps.

Contestants line up on the start-line and await the signal to start.

Each contest then races their mount around the outside of the barrels in an oval pattern making sure not to touch or go inside of the boundries marked by the barrels.

Touching a barrel marks the contestant with a -1 point penalty for each time that they touch a barrel during the race. Cutting inside the barrels boundry results in disqualification of the offending contestant.

The race is finished when all contestants cross the marked finish-line after the the third lap.

Upon finishing the race the contestant that finishes first with no or the fewest point penalties wins the race.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Figure Eight:

Contestants race for three laps.

This race crosses the track once each way through the center of the track marked by a barrel.

Contestants line up on the starting line and await the signal to start.

Contestants race across the center of the track. Crossing just in front of the center barrel They race around the far end of the track and return crossing again through the center and around the starting end of the track.

Contestants will race the Figure eight course for the completion of three laps and towards the finish line.

Touching a barrel marks the contestant with a -1 point penalty for each time that they touch a barrel during the race. Cutting to the inside of a barrel boundary results in disqualification of the offending contestant.

The race is finished when all contestants cross the marked finish-line after the the third lap.

Upon finishing the race the contestant that finishes first with no or the fewest point penalties wins the race.

-------------------------------------------------------------
Relays:

Using the designed track can be raced in any of the three described races or simply a straight race to either end.
[Presented with two member teams]

Oval Relay:

One member of each team sets up at the start-line and awaits the signal. After the signal the first member of each team races down the track to circle around the far end. The next team member for each team then approaches the start-line and awaits the first member to return pass the line of barrels or finish-line.

After the first team member successfully crosses the finish-line the second team member is permitted to go.

Touching a barrel marks the contestant with a -1 point penalty for each time that they touch a barrel during the race. Cutting to the inside of a barrel boundary results in disqualification of the offending team.

The race is finished when both members of each team cross the finish line.

Upon finishing the race the team that finishes first with no or the fewest point penalties wins the race.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Straight Relay:

A member of each team will line up on each end of the track but on opposite sides. On the established starting lines (a line will need to be established at the far end)

The beginning team members will await the signal to start. After the signal to start the first member of each team will race down the length of the track and cross the last row of barrels.

After the first member of each team successfully crosses the last line of barrels. The second team member is permitted to go.

Touching a barrel marks the contestant with a -1 point penalty for each time that they touch a barrel during the race. Cutting to the inside of a barrel boundaries results in disqualification of the offending team.

The race is finished when both members of each team cross the finish line.

Upon finishing the race the contestant that finishes first with no or the fewest point penalties wins the race.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Figure eight Relays:

This race crosses the track once each way through the center of the track marked by a barrel.

One team member lines up on the starting line and await the signal to start. The other stands back away from the starting point.

The first team member races across the center of the track. Crossing just in front of the center barrel They race around the far end of the track and return crossing again through the center and around the starting end of the track.

The second team member moves to the start-line and waits for the first to return crossing the finishline

After the first member of each team successively crosses the last line of barrels. The second team member is permitted to go.

Touching a barrel marks the contestant with a -1 point penalty for each time that they touch a barrel during the race. Cutting to the inside of a barrel boundary results in disqualification of the offending contestant.

The race is finished when all contestants cross the marked finish-line after the the third lap.

Upon finishing the race the contestant that finishes first with no or the fewest point penalties wins the race.

Hmmm?...Umm? ....Well?

Jaycol laughs

"That kinda caught me off guard for a moment."

Roled, please PM me the details of the Events so that I can start forming them together.

As a hind thought. I should have mentioned that I intended this thread for a planning board for ideas and input. As far as the details of the events and backgrounds I want to save that for the actual posting after it all gets put together. Saying that, before there are any posts here with times, locations and their sponsors listed and/or event specifics. I ask that everyone hold on to that for now. As this is still in the early stages of planning, it should remain flexible (as in suggestive) at this point in time.
I am still talking to, and looking for potential sponsors for events that can be tapped into around the parades to co-support each other. So we want to be flexible at this time as to the locations and times until we get some idea what is good for them (time periods mainly).
The parade dates are fine as it is what we discussed. Details may need to be changed slightly as needed while we gather things together. However it looks good what you have here. What I do need from you Roled is at least a brief on the purpose and background for the parades, or in detail if you wish. (PM those to me please, so that I have them.) I will send you shortly a list of things that I was looking at as well and some that I am working on for background.

Just a thought on the race course, Jaycol.  Perhaps instead of penalizing for "touching" the barrels, you should have a dev flag them as solid before activities.  Then, touching them will be it's own penalty because it could slow you down a fraction of a second.  A slight nudge might not have an effect.  It could add more skill to the race as well.  How close do you come without impeding yourself could be interesting.  It might also require less work for you in determining what constitutes a touch.  Meh, just a thought...up to you of course.   :)

However it's set up, great idea!

Yes It will run from Friday April 9-11. We are still working on scheduling the events and the details of them. We are also looking into some pre-event backdrops that can be used to lead into the event that can lead to optional RP's if anyone cares to use them. We hope to have enough ready to post the event soon. Then the rest will be added as it develops. Times and details may change slightly after the initial posting, but not that much. Any changes should be completed prior to the last week before other then additions if any.

Just to retouch on the subject of the weekend events. We are trying to design them for RP with little mechanics required. Though some will require that (such as the races) we are testing how how they can be done so that the results and participating will not be skill or stats based. Some stats may play a factor effecting stamina. Most of the races will be short for example. there may be a few longer ones offered, and we were looking into something for the little pets too. Which, as it looks would mostly be for fun rather then competition. They are still fun to watch.

The events will provide some back and an environment to use for RP. It will be up to the players/characters to fill in the atmosphere of the Celebration. Most will be sponsored and will have someone on hand to guide the event or to support it. These will vary, as some are main events and some are not. Any open slots left during the last week leading in will probably be filled will a filler event to be used as optional and unsponsored. Because it is a long weekend RL situations may provide some distractions that may leave us short staffed at times. (So some patience and alibiing may be required)

Speaking only for myself. I have already set the weekend aside and plan to be on hand for most of it. (Granting of course for emergencies and/or situations beyond my control)) I may use supporting characters for an event depending on what is needed at the time. I do not expect everyone to try to make every event, but there should be enough offered for everyone to catch some of them and have a little fun with it. Most of the events are set to the convenience of those who are going to sponsor it. So we won't be able to hit every time zone unless someone else can make an offer. If, for some reason I can't sleep. I may pop in and offer something that I can set up quickly.

That all being said, I have one rule of thumb that I go by when I help work with player events. [The size and the number of those that participate is not important, what is important is that you have provided some entertainment for those that participated.] As that is all you can ever really do. An event is just that, an event. It provides a background to use. It is the interaction between characters that makes it a success whether it is one or one hundred. So, if you have an idea or or are interested in doing something for that weekend that fits in with the theme. Please, let one of us know in-game or by PM. Ideas you can post here. Fresh thoughts are always good.

Giroum was contacted by Roled about performing a service at the Laanx temple.
I`d love to, however that`s a rather busy weekend for me and I think I`ll only be available on the 10th from around 1200GMT to 1500GMT. If this is alright with the organisers, I`ll plan something.

Hmm? I still have to get with the others on the possible changes to the schedule we have. Hopefully no later then tonight. That is workable, and I definitely want something on Laanx for the weekend. That particular time period puts several things in the Gugrontrid and Outpost areas, but if it is in the 1200-1300GMT area. I don't see it causing a lot of players running back and forth at that time. So give me a day or so to get back with you on that. I can see we will need to post the schedule soon for the main things listed above.
Keep in mind also I do plan on during some pre-event things in the weeks prior, some will be planned, some will be spur of the moment. If something like that would suit you better I can look to see if we can attach something to it for support. Just a thought. I would still rather see that in the weekend. So let me see what we can slide around yet. The only thing I am looking at as far as putting things into the schedule atm is not having things overlap unless they are similar to each other and in the same area, or forcing something in that has no aligning support from other events. There no concrete plans for the morning yet so one or two small events could take place in Hydlaa around that, as the city wakes up and prepares for the later events. I see no issue with it. If nothing else we could set up a mini-market before and/or after your ceremony for support. So yes definitely workable at this time. I'll try to let you know soon after I talk to the others.
