psclient.exe and pslaunch.exe crashing!
« on: March 02, 2010, 04:27:10 am »
I just downloaded the planeshift client through download link on the planeshift website (through the torrents area) for Windows Vista 32 bit (file version 0.5.2.1). I went to where the planeshift client.exe had downloaded to and ran the .exe to install the game and it installed with no issues onto my computer. I tried to run both pslaunch.exe (which it told me stopped working and windows was closing the program) and psclient.exe which when I reported the program had quit unexpectedly I got this: CrashID=bp-ad680bdd-14bb-4637-8d57-6b36a2100301 . Can somebody please tell me what to do?

I tried going into the command prompt and doing cd C:\Program Files\PlaneShift
pslaunch --repair

it said that all files passed the integrity check. Any suggestions are welcome to help get this to work. All my graphics drivers etc are up to date. Thank you all in advanced!

The fact that pslaunch.exe "stopped working" is a rather strange one ... all it needs a working OpenGL driver, internet access, and a few access rights for your application data folder.

More details about your hardware might be useful.

What details would you like? If possible could you tell me where to find them from and I will get them to you.

There are lots of sources for such information (Properties of "My Computer"; Properties of your desktop, Advanced; Control Panel ... Device Manager; your computer's offer or bill; freeware system analysis tools - e.g. AIDA32, HWiNFO32, SiSoft Sandra Lite...).

c|net Downloads: Free Diagnostic Software for Windows (ignore the "optimizers", look only for those which report existing hardware).

Most important: Technical details about your graphic card chipset (GPU) and brand/model. And a driver version number is better than "the current version".

Also interesting: Your processor (CPU), your amount of RAM.

Hope I get this stuff right, if you need more info let me know.

Windows Vista Home Premium
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo
Memory (RAM): 2GB
Not sure where to find the info about my graphics card but I know it's Nvidia.

That's as much as I can give at the moment let me know where/how to find more if you need it.

Your crash report indicates you are crashing in shader evaluation. We need to know the exact graphics card you are using.

Thanks.

NVIDIA GeForce 8400 - I checked and the new driver for it came out yesterday so I'm currently updating it, hopefully after I do this my issue is solved.

Since I'm using Vista right clicking on the desktop results in changing the desktop background, etc. Appearances. Found the device manager just not sure what information is needed from there (gave my "display adapter" information). I am slightly wary about installing software that would report existing hardware, so for the moment I am skipping that (unless I absolutely must). Not sure about the computer's offer or bill so I can't really do anything with that either. Hope that this was slightly useful and my issue can get fixed.

Edit: Updated my graphics driver and restarted my computer. I tried to run psclient.exe and got a different crash id (still having the same error with pslaunch.exe though). So the crash id is: CrashID=bp-9537fd07-ef4b-436f-8da5-e4d9e2100302 .

Well, at first: Thank you for your cooperation, providing as many details as you can is definitely useful.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you finding the details we need under Vista because I don't have Vista installed anywhere. I still prefer XP.

I wonder if you updated your graphic drivers via the Microsoft Windows Update, or via downloading matching drivers from the Nvidia website. Even though Vista makes some use of 3D accellerated graphics, somehow I doubt that drivers offered by Microsoft fully support OpenGL (because Microsoft prefers its own DirectX API).

I really have to suggest you to search for one of the mentioned system diagnostic tools. They will be able to recognise the available hardware, even without opening the PC and looking for printed brand names on the circuit boards (the mainboard as well as the graphic card - although I already wonder if a GeForce 8400 is an onboard/mobile solution).

AIDA32 is already quite outdated; its successor is Lavalys Everest, which provides a time-limited test version. SiSoftware Sandra is available as feature-limited free version. HWiNFO32 is freeware anyway, compact, a small download, and does not even install itselt permanently in the system (just unpack to any folder). They all have a wide acceptance and good renown.

Or you might try to ask "your local nerd" ;) for assistance collecting useful information from the device manager only.

Download, install, reboot computer, and retry PS.

Your GPU is among the ones listed as supported Joccey, I use this version (I think) with my 8800GT and PS works a charm.

ALSO, if you did use Windows Update to get your driver PS WILL NOT WORK. I just remembered that I had to get a driver from nVidia for PS to work.

That confirms my guess that Microsoft graphic drivers may not support the OpenGL 3D interface, which PlaneShift relies on.

Thank you LigH, I am trying to give as much details as I can find so you (and anyone else) can hopefully fix my issue, as I was and still am interested in being an avid planeshift-er. I will try what Akaiddo has suggested and if that fails may turn to my resident nerds in my life (not sure how much help they will be able to be though).

I downloaded from the nvidia website and rebooted my computer, but I will try the link you gave Akaiddo. I believe I will install this tomorrow morning as I am heading to bed very soon and I will have plenty of time tomorrow to try things out and respond to things that may need to be done.

I checked your new crash report and you are still crashing shader evaluation. Maybe you should try deleting the shadercache.

Well I would like to come back to visit but can't seem to get the game to work :(

So I can see the laucher window, I go to play, a window opens up [all white] with a toolbar at the bottom I watch move all the way to the right and then the window closes and I find myself back at the launcher window.

error log states-
Wed Mar 03 09:21:51 2010, <..\..\src\common\paws\pawsimagedrawable.cpp:66 pawsImageDrawable::PreparePixmap SEVERE>
Wed Mar 03 09:21:51 2010, Could not open image: >/planeshift/materials/wetstone01_icon.png<

Specs on my computer [brand new install up to date with windows 7]
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU           530 @2.93GHz  2.93 GHz
Installed memory (RAM) 4.00GB
System type 64-bit Operating System

Video card
Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT (Microsoft corporation - WDDM v1.1)

Is that enough info?

Cheers
Anfa

\\o// Anfa coming back!

- Those error messages are "normal" and unrelated to the crash...
- CPU, RAM and GPU are fine; chances are that Windows 7 (64 bit) may give some issues, though.
- It is highly recommended to download and install nVidia graphic card drivers from nvidia.com (or maybe omegadrivers.net), do not rely on Microsoft shipped drivers!
- When a crash dialog with the crash ID appears, try to press Ctrl+C, it might work to paste its content into a textfield with Ctrl+V afterwards.
