no audio / can't run updater
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:26:26 am »
Howdy. Looking to try this out, but i've been bashing my skull into my keyboard for the last hour...

I finally got the game to run in fullscreen mode, not quite sure how I pulled that off, but I have NO audio what so ever. Not in the menu's & not in the game world. The audio option has been toggled on and off from the "setup" menu with no change. My only option from the drop down menu is "software" (?)

The install was done all with default settings, with the exception of my window manager for which I chose "other" as I am running compiz.  The terminal codes "/opt/PlaneShift/psupdater" only return :bash errors

I'm running:
Ubuntu 9.10
Pentium 4 3.2ghz HT
2 gigs of ram
Nvidia 8800 GT 512mb

Any help would be appreciated.

About compiz... I have no idea if that causes any trouble. I'm not using it anymore since i had problems in the past with 3D games relying on opengl. But as far as i know these issues should be gone with latest compiz packages.

Back to the audio because that was your main problem...
Do you have Openal installed? if not, try to instal it with your package manager provided with your distribution.

Before i continue to explain how to enable sound further, i'm waiting for you to answer about the openal thing.

Openal took care of the audio after a reboot. Thanks much.  Still can't seem to figure out the terminal issues, though.

Upon playing for about an hour the audio will occasionally revert to just static and them completely cut out. Thoughts?

I took the advice of the top post in this forum about openal and creating the ".alsoftrc" file. This completely solved my audio issues...

However...

The game would then run extremely choppy and eventually crash. The first time it crashed it actually logged me out of Ubuntu some how. Since then it has been a series of crashes every few minutes. I then decided to try a reinstall, but since I did that I can't get passed the loading screen before it kicks me back out to the launcher.

I've deleted the ".alsoftrc" file with no change. This is shaping up to be quite the challenge...
