The Unodin Welcoming
April 9, 10, 11, 2010
Friday 1800GMT -Sunday 2400 GMT
Gugrontrid, Outpost.
Hydlaa and Ojaveda.

The Coming of Unodin

The surrounding hills show the last traces of snow as its continues to recede to the warmer weather. The softened ground absorbs much of water that is offered from the melting snows before the heavy rains of the new cycle begins. The soil will welcome the rains until it can hold no more. The excess runs down from the slopes of the surrounding landscape feeding into the rivers and streams. These will rise quickly from the offerings often to their breaking point. The roar of the rushing waters can be heard for kilometers as the rivers and streams weave their way across the land. The passage of which will carry and distribute the nutrients of life along their length.
As the last of winter's cold winds continue to warm with each passing day. The signs of new life begins to emerge. Bearing the promise of renewal as the warmer seasons approach. Across the land plants and foliage spout out. Reaching up towards the offering of the crystals light. Their buds forming in readiness to offer the beauty of their flowers to the warmth of the changing cycle. These Unodin blossoms will soon begin to open adding an array of different colors and scents to the once frigid air.
The freshness of the blossoms creates a stir within the surrounding wildlife. Many of which awaken from their seasonal hibernation to once again roam the lands seeking their place in the environment. Looking to gain new territorial boundaries or simply to search for food. It is the time for birth of many species. The young born will be nurtured and protected until they reach an age when they will move off on their own accord to take their place in the way of life. It is for this reason that many of the worlds wildlife may be over hostile to invaders within their territorial regions.

Across the world many peoples begin the preparations for the cycles change. Each in accordance with the customs of their region, religion, or chosen way of life. The farmers prepare their fields for the planting of the seasons crops, or the new births of the livestock they raise. Miners have already begun to travel from their winter's quarters to beat the the early rains, as they travel to where they will set up the camps which will be their home for much of the year.
With the cycle's passing. The trade routes have begun to reopen. Bringing the prosperity of commerce along the once closed lanes of travel. Travelers swarm the roads with their numbers. Hunters, trappers, traders, merchants, miners, farmers, pilgrims, warriors and criminals all share the same trails. Each intent on the purpose of their livelihood.
The Welcoming of Unodin brings the communities together in celebration to welcome the upcoming change of the cycle. Often centering in the farming communities. Though many do look to their own Gods and beliefs during the first day of Unodin. It is often Xiosia that is mostly looked towards during this celebration. It is her favors and blessings that is sought to bring in the warmth and fair weather needed to raise crops and livestock. It is believed that by her will many of the resources of nature can be harvested from the richness of her bounties and brought to the markets as usable goods.
The festivities of the Unodin Celebration provides the rural and urban communities a chance to introduce their children who have come of age. They in turn get the chance to participate with others to demonstrate their own skills and abilities, socially and physically. In the hopes that they may be able to find suitable companions, a spouse, or the opportunity to earn their way into the community.
Pilgrimages and fasting are often encouraged and observed religiously not only for Xiosia, but to the other Gods as well. Both as a trial and test of faith and to help one establish the strength of dedication to the belief that they have chosen to follow. Fasting usually ends on the first day of Unodin with a feast or a meal dedicated to honor the deity for which it was observed.

Re: The Second Unodin Welcoming Celebration (RP)
« Reply #2 on: March 17, 2010, 06:23:27 pm »
[We have put together a few backdrops to add some role play leading up the the Unodin Event. I will post those here for those that may be interested in them. Some may fit in with ongoing RP's already in progress]

The Blessings of First Blossoms
[Pre-event backdrop, for freeflow RP]

Upon the hills and fields of Yliakum early spring blossoms begin to bud and take bloom. Many can be found along the roadsides of well traveled roads. As the constant use adds some warmth in the valleys through which they pass. The rich color of their flowers stick out in contrast against the faded yellow grasses left from the seasons prior. The old grasses serve in their own way as nutrients and and coverage for the new life that sprouts beneath them.
The first of the season's blossoms are said by some to be a promise of the Gods that life will renew itself again upon the world. A promise that signifies the end of the harsh winter grasp and the dread that came with it. Others believe that they are the whispers in which Xiosia sends out as her will for fruition and fertility. The rich colors and scents added to entice the many species of Yliakum and to remind them that life must once again be renewed. To the more simple beliefs it only marks the end of a season and the beginning of the next. A time to ready the fields for planting and the work that follows.
For whatever belief or reason the beauty with which the first blossoms offer make them a joyful view after the winters harsh grip passes. They are sought after and gathered by both males and females of many races and communities for several purposes.
The males seek the flowers mainly as a gift to present to the mate of his life or the maiden who had filled his dreams during the long winter months. The First Blossoms become a prize of beauty and pleasantness that can be offered as a gift of his affection and devotion. Often with the hopes of winning the ladies favor.
The females seek the spring blossoms for several purposes. The spring blossoms are also gathered for decoration. Maidens cherish weaving the stems and  flowers into chains that can be worn about the neck or wrist, some a wreath that may be worn in adornment about their head as a maidens crown.

The joy of one finding the first flower blossom of the season is looked upon as a blessing. Many may take it to be presented as an offering to the gods asking that their wishes or prayers be answered. The flowers blossom is offered into the local waters and allowed to float away in a manner to carry the prayers or wishes off to the God in which it was offered to. With the hopes that their dreams may be fulfilled by the offering. It is not surprising to come across waterways during the month of Unidon and seeing blossoms float upon the surface. Each holding the dreams and prayers of the one's that placed them there.

Caravans of preparation
[Pre-event backdrop, for freeflow RP]

As Unodin approaches across the land many merchant begin to gather wares for the early season sales. Some take to the roads in caravans for added protection against the many dangers that come with the changing of the season. After the winter passes the needs for supplies increases as storerooms are found nearly depleted from use or spoilage. Orders are sent out to the distant merchants in hope that the needed items can be delivered as soon as the roads begin to open for better travel.
The main routes are as they have always been from Ojaveda to Hydlaa. Hyldaa to Ojaveda,Gugrontrid and to the newly positioned Outpost. On Occasion a group of merchants will chance the further dangers of delivery to the Bronze Door Fortress which is also in need of supplies after the winter season passes.
Caravans tend to be slow as they travel. Merchants travel together leading their pack animals along the open roadways, laden down with the many wares and supplies that they carry onward to the next town. The slow progress  and the heavy riches they carry make them ideal targets for bandits and wild animals looking  to fend off the winters hunger or to mark their territorial claim. For this reason some hire on mercenaries or guards to travel with them as they move from town to town.
As the cities prepare to open their gates in celebration of the approach of Unodin. The number of caravans increases bringing in the riches of other lands to a welcoming community.

[Caravans can be easily planned with little time or resources. A few items to transport (volume not being necessary) A set time and place to meet and a route of travel.
Example: On this day at this time  a caravan will gather and travel from Hydlaa's East gate to Ojaveda carrying gemstones gathered to exchange for food sources in Ojaveda. Where arrangements will be made to have them shipped later by the provider.(Unless you wish to make the return trip) I have time this on a trip to Ojaveda using pet follow to see  what it would look like and how long it would take in that fashion. It looked okay but in order to stay close to your Rivnac requires a lot of stop and go mechanics. The time it takes is about 50 mins from the East Hydlaa Gate to the Oja Gate. taking a route between the rogue camp and the Ulbernaut area. About 15 mins if you ride at a walk]

Dangers along the Roads
[Pre-Event backdrop, for freeflow RP]

As the numbers of travelers and caravans of merchants begin to increase along the long roadways that run between the cities. The numbers of villainous opportunity increases as well as bandits and groups of rogues await for easy prey and a quick chance of a rich harvest of goods.
Varying in their numbers or means of organization They may look to single out a lone traveler or a small group. Some of the most notorious have been known to infiltrate the larger caravans with their own guards and then await the goods somewhere along the route before putting their dire plan into motion. Often at the surprise and dismay of the the merchants as they quickly find themselves quickly out numbered. Though many of these groups do rob they seldom murder their victims in the process. What good is it to destroy the very source of of your own trade. The very merchants that provided this years bounty may do so again at another time in the future. And murder only leads to the quicker reprisal of bounty hunters and/or vigilantes.

[In all fairness for both parties, a small supply of goods and a few coins should be provided in the RP of the theft. Nothing extravagant or to demanding]

Patrols at Arms
[Pre-event backdrop, for freeflow RP]

Reports of foul deeds reach the streets and markets of the cities as well as the taverns. Mixed groups of armed companions, adventurers. mercenaries, bounty hunters and vigilantes take to the road in search of those that live outside the law. Sometimes even to hunt dangerous packs of animals known to attack travelers at certain locations along the routes between the cities.
Whether for adventure, pay, revenge, or just in spite of the lawlessness these individuals are sometimes as ruthless as those they hunt. Though some fighting may occur upon a chance meeting of bandits. Most confrontations usually result in a chase with few if any captured and the majority getting away. At best the bandits are eventually driven from the area for a short period of time to allow the safe passage of goods and travel.
The increase of armed patrols coming from the cities puts bandit groups on their guard and forces them to watch for mounted groups riding with purpose throughout the wilderness. In time as the early caravans of the year dwindle from the rush and demand of the changing season so do the number of patrols and attacks along the roadways.

The Legend of the Gentleman bandit
[Pre-event backdrop, for freeflow RP]

Now I don't know if he exists or if he really ever did. All I can say is that somehow he always finds his way back into the folklore in the cities or along the trails. His tales are endless as time itself. Some say he was caught, some say he never was. Others just laugh at his deeds as a mere myth or fiction. But,...Still the tales come in about his exploits.
There is no good description of him as he seems to be a member of all races shift changing to suit his needs they say. Giving reason for his ability to avoid pursuit or capture. No sooner as you hear one tale that happened in a city on such and such a night you may hear another sworn to have happened at the same time at a different location.
In all the stories tell the same events of a kind gentlemen who may often escort a lady during the darkness of night to her destination gracing her with his charm of wit and conversation. Yet keeping his face always in shadow. He leaves her with a graceful farewell often with a light kiss upon her hand before he departs. Leaving her often enchanted by his words that she doesn't noticed that he also departed with her ring or other jewelry if he happened to help adjust her cloak against the nights chill.
Though in most cases he seldom threatens his victims. He has been known to approach a lady and her escort armed with a dagger of some beautifully lain gemstone or another. Showing it only in a manner that suggests that the escort behave as he releaves him of his tria pouch. His face is always masked in splendid cloth that covers all but his eyes. With an apology for her inconvenience and a comment of her beauty he bows to the lady with practiced grace, then with a quick laugh and a thank you to her escort he disappears back into the shadows from which he came.
Now as I said it is just folklore. I never met him. It is said the women folk love him for his mysterious and charming demeanor and the menfolk hate him for just the same reason. Which always adds to the zest of the tales.

[I will add some of the backgrounds for a few of the events listed and let the others provide their own with the details of the event. So they will not be in any particular order]

Greeting the Azure
Opening Ceremony
1800GMT Friday
Gugrontrid

People begin to gather at the foot of the stone way path that leads into the city of Gugrontrid in the early morning hours to await the rise of the Azure light. Anticipating the spectacle which marks the changing of the seasons. It is believed that at the first glimpse the crystal is said to flash sending out an aura of bright light that halos out like a ripple across the morning sky. Some may credit this to the power Talad summoned on the day he raised the great city of Gugrontrid from the land or even to the power that first created the Kran. Folklore and tales may vary as to the reason or explanation. Some less enchanted individuals insist that it is no different from any other day of the year.
Whether or not it truly does, the first morning of  Unodin does have a religious and practical significance across the world as it is celebrated in many different ways.

Still, it is a wonder to observe as the crystal's light cascades across the morning sky. The expectations and rejoicing of the approach of Unodin only adds a majestic appeal to the natural event. Each individual looks upon it in their own way. Many take with them a spiritual or emotional enlightenment that adds to the depth of their own religious or personal beliefs.

The procession to the Temple of Talad.
1830GMT Friday, April 9
Gugrontrid

After the Azure Sun marks the beginning of the first day of Unodin. The crowd is addressed by a representative of Talad. They are welcomed with open arms and are invited to join in a procession to the temple of Talad as he may have done on that first day after he had raised the city of Gugrontrid from the rock. The gathering is lead up the Stone way towards the temple where a ceremony of worship will be held in Talad's name.

Breaking of the Fast
2100-2400 Friday, April 9
Stonehead Tavern
Gugrontrid

The breaking of the fast is a meal given to in homage for those that have observed a period of suffrage either intentionally or not. The Unodin feast is often given early in the day in religious presentation observing the fast of the individual in worship or for marking the end of the cold season where food is not often had in abundance.
A fasting period may range from a day to several, sometimes even much longer. The longer periods are often classified as a ritual of homage or test of faith by certain groups or individuals. Establishment into or to achieve ranking in some sects may require such trials among their memberships.
Aside from the more fanatic group requirements. The general or common use of one day of fasting may be used
for the observation of personal cleansing or rebirth. Refreshing one's insight towards the divinity of their chosen deity, or their own religious nature. The period of fasting often ending in prayers of confirming dedication, gratitude, and sometimes of forgiveness. Ritual offerings may be observed in the asking of, or for blessings of the faith. From the simple lighting of a candle, to the sacrifice of male livestock raised for that purpose based upon its vitality.
When all religious rites are seen too. The means for a great meal is prepared for. This is the breaking of the fast. The last honoring of gratitude to the divine host. The feast represents the renewal or the strengthening of the vessel of faith.

Story Telling by the Fireplace
2100-2400GMT Friday April 9
Stonehead Tavern
Gugrontrid

During the long winter months many families gathered about the fireplaces of their homes to listen to the tales shared with them by the elder members of the family. Settled in the warm comfort given off by the fire and the faint glow of the flames as they told the stories taught to them, or from ones of their own experiences.
This is often looked upon as a festive event for the household as tea and cider was offered as well as some special treats to be eaten while the stories were told. Once the refreshments were handed out and all settled near the hearth the stories would begin. The young would listen with attentive care and wonder at the mavels of adventure being presented,. The adults often listened amused at the changing details of a tale they may have heard before.
With the changing of the season comes many travels across the lands. In a rural settlement a travelers may be welcomed into a home for a meal and shelter for little more then the telling of their travels and news of the world and how thing may have changed in time. The traveler was always a welcome guest and given the honor of a stage at the hearth as they shared the tales of their journey.
Unodin brings many travelers from the far reaches of our world. Many finding shelter in the taverns or bed house in the cities or along the roadways. Though some pay for their room and board with the exception of a renown bard. Their stories, songs and tales of adventure are always welcome to those present.

In celebration of the Second Unodin Welcome festivity, The Brotherhood of Talad is proud to announce the ceremony honoring Talad in the Temple of Gugrontid [19:00 GMT] and invites to all people of Yliakum to attend to it. We will share the teachings of Talad about love, charity and friendship among those who assist.

As Talad showed mercy with us and cared about the meeker of his creatures, with this ceremony, we are beginning a new charity fund for all people in need, specially the ones who are newcomers to this land. Talad taught us with his own example to share our skills, wisdom, talents and goods to benefit those who had not the chance yet to build a wealthier life, so please feel free to donate with anything you please, it doesn't matter if the donations are in trias, items or even time! Everything and everyone is welcome!

May Talad bless you!

Giroum Duphra of the Devotees of Laanx, accompanied by other members of the faith, will be conducting a sermon within the Iron Temple in Hydlaa as part of the festival from [1300-1400GMT].
All are welcome to attend, particularly those who bow to the masquerade lord, and are encouraged to bring prayers. In accordance with ceremony, please write your prayers upon paper [book or map] and bring them along with a night mushroom. Any other offerings or sacrifices that worshippers wish to cast into the temple well are of course welcome.

[Pleased to say that, looking at Qter`s post, our sermons are going to be very different.]

Greetings Friends All!

The Call of Destiny, the Daughters and the Sons of Xiosia be honored and pleased to invite ye to the
Service Fer Xiosia
just after the Parade of Guilds and the Presentation of Staves of Accolade.

The Service will be held in the Garden of our Goddess and all be invited!

We shall sing and dance, chant the words of our Goddess herself from her sacred teachings,
then share with each other our stories of the Goddess and the Peace she brings to our lives.
Then if ye chooses, ye can meditate before the Ruqua tree.
All who wish may bless each other with
Pure Water from the Sacred Pool.

Finally, we shall share a picnic meal and sing and tell stories till the night sky lightens again!
And for those who wish, bring yer cloaks and coverings and sleep in the Garden
under the gaze of the Lady of Life and Fertility, and ye shall be Blessed!

May the Harmony of Nature surround ye, and may Xiosia guide ye!

All Be Welcome in the Garden of Xiosia!

Peace to ye!
