to compare death penalties:
PS= drakku's curse: attributes lowered 50% for 30 minutes, if you happened to be carrying inventory thats over half your total weight you'll be unable to move.
WoW= resurrection sickness: attributes lowered 75% for 10 minutes plus a 25% durability hit to weapons and armor added to the 10% hit from dieing (35% total), for those 10 minutes you probably don't want to attack anything but then again 10 minutes isn't long, the real penalty is the repair bills at higher levels of gear.
Ultima Online and i think Darkfall= drop all your items and gear on death, hope the scavengers didn't take it all by the time you run back to your corpse.
Final Fantasy XI= you lose experience if you die, and you can lose levels if you die a lot.
EvE Online= similar to UO and darkfall, your ship is destroyed and you hope the surviving modules aren't taken before you get back to the wreck with another ship, thats if you don't get podded after your ship is destroyed, if you get podded, all implants you had at the time are gone which can be expensive to replace, and if you didn't keep your clone updated you'll have lost alot of skillpoints, also there's a newer penalty for those who can pilot tech 3 strategic cruisers in that if you get podded you'll lose a level in one of the strat cruiser related skills regardless of wether you had an updated clone or not.
so yeah every MMO has their way of dealing with death and a lot of them are annoying. you just have to learn to deal with it, thankfully you can get PP through other means and while it may be slower it doesn't completely shut you down, as for killing creatures, just figure out what's easy to kill and work from there, you might just have to kill a lot of one-eyed rats before you have the weapon and armor skills high enough to safely kill a diseased rat.
