It's illegal to get prostitutes at my age IRL.

But it's a-okay when roleplaying.

Because without people playing roles, there is no society.

What else would you do in an MMORPG?

If you prefer only leveling or PvP fighting, you'd probably have chosen a different kind of game.

Why do we roleplay? ... For the "better second life". For more fun. For more friends. For more ways of "express yourself".

If you can't be a *** in real life, you can still at least play being a *** here.

I second ... Er eh ... Third that !

Seriously though, one of the side benefits is you get to experience and see things from a completely different perspective.
In rl I would never end up in a situation where I'm running from the law
Or guild of doing something really bad. Having done such things in character I have a
Better idea of what such a person might feel like ( or struggle with )

Most of the reasons given so far seem to be summed up with LigH's comment...

For the "better second life".

Interestingly, that does not match my allure to the genre. To me the characters have a life of their own. It is not a second life for me. It is their life and the dice (on traditional rpg sessions) let them express that life. Perhaps it has been my experience of running an rpg world that has allowed me to see that the dice do, in fact, tell the story if we are open to listening to them.

If the dice are listened to, then the characters express themselves. To me the player is like a fortune teller to the characters. The fortune teller does not live their life through those whose fortune they are telling; yet helps only as a guide. To me, the character is not doing the things that would normally not be my choice to do in life; but are doing what they want to do. What the dice tell us they desire to do.

The second life concept is not foreign to me. There is one player in my world that goes from one Knight/Fighter/Beserker to the next playing countless numbers of the same alter-ego over the years. He enjoys it and finds great entertainment in it. He plays them well as he is playing his alter-ego. It is not my intention to dismiss that style or put it down. Yet to me the art of rpging is to find the life of the character; not to give them the life one has never had. To let the dice tell you what the character desires and by listening to the dice they will tell you who the character is. Oft times it can be a great surprise as the dice helps the character define themselves.

Once we know them well; then we can play them well; as we know better what they would say and how they would act. Yet that phase of getting to know the character; by how the dice define them; is my great attraction to Role Playing.

Sheesh, imho you've pretty much got it figured out from the beginning! I think you'll like this game if you have that attitude about roleplaying, and I definitly agree with you that a character is not a second life, it is their life. Like Rigwyn says in his location: "Think of yourself as the author, not the character. Now that distinction has been made, role play as if you are writing the next killer novel !" Well, I think it would be more of "the next killer play-write" since that is what the logs remind me of, but that doesn't matter  :P. Anyhoo, it's a character's story, not any player's fantasy story that one should roleplay.

I like roleplaying so I could improve my creativity and writing stories. Also, so I could get better English mark.  :innocent:

I like role playing because it tells a story through (hopefully) interesting characters and interesting situations. But you don't just read it in a book, you watch it unfold in real time and sometimes the story turns sharply from what you thought would happen and you get to follow that thread as it happens.

Not to mention, I like watching how other people react to the things my characters do. It's often quite different from any reaction I would have and it's a chance to see a different point of view.

I like it because it provides an additional level of immersion to the game world that is distinctly lacking on every other system that I have encountered with the exception of private games. I truly enjoy extended interactions between characters in main that do not get borked by an oos or an ooc reference. I really think there are a lot of charming people on this system who play with interesting concepts. It makes the system unique.
