Light of the Crystal, what is that?
« on: April 07, 2010, 06:52:03 pm »
IMO the days in Yliakum are far too dark. I use to turn up brightness correction to something like 0.7 at 1PM IG time because it looks like a cloudy late afternoon or just before a great thunderstorm. At night the default brightness is okay, but during daytime, especially around noon the Azure Sun is far too dim.

Or is it just daylight saving time?

Mine is always at 3.1 XD

eso the brightness correction stops making things brighter after about 1.3 so no point in going to 3.1

What's the point of going higher then 3.1 then?

@ Yaniel:

The developers seem to have it "optimized" to the (usually completely overbright) LCD/TFT monitors. ;)

For graphic and video affine people, who calibrated their monitor to a rather linear gamma curve (and even may still use a CRT monitor), it is recommendable to use a graphic card tweaking tool which is able to change the driver gamma correction only while the game is running (I prefer a gamma value around 1.7 to 2.0, and recommend RivaTuner for nVidia or ATI Tray Tool for ATI).

The game internal brightness correction is not related to gamma, but to internal light sources of the game world.

no need of additional tools the nvidia control panel which is installed with the drivers allows to change brightness too, altough in windows it's a bit limited so you have to see if it's enough. i usually use 1.5 2.0 on my crt and no correction on my lcd.
unfortunately almost all games are calibrated like this... (oblivion mass effect dragon age... just to name some they are all black on my crt, i've to put the brigtness gauge to max)

It is true - additional tools may be not necessary.

But they can make the temporary change more convenient - by calling the client wrapped in a gamma correction profile, or by providing quick access to such a profile via its system tray icon.

although i never saw it myself when i used macosx (i try to use it as little as possible) i was told there is a screen calibration functionality which allows you to change brightness in the settings.

I would like to see improvement in the lighting of PS.
Having night time would be great and rather interesting, and if you say there is no night in yliakum then where the heck did touches come from?
yes better lighting during the day would be good.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

Touches? -- Torches?

There seem to be still issues with the changing shadowmaps, regarding the CrystalSpace engine...

Just had this one again: Bright light on the plaza at 3 p.m., passed a map loading portal forth and back - and shadows all over the plaza now, no more light.

Regarding darkness:

It wasn't that long ago vakachehk, that people were complaining left and right about how dark it got during the night cycle.
Whether it was monitor settings, real life lighting, contrast etc.. Was somewhat of a mystery.

There is no night in Yliakum, the Crystal retains some glow from daytime sunshine on the surface, resulting in periods of twilight, but never complete darkness.

Re: lighting issues from 0.4.03, was a rendering issue I believe.
